This is a very beautiful study. I don't have much to say except that I learn a lot by looking at this (especially when people post preliminary steps before finished work).

I felt so hectic and hesitant when I scoped the small petite
with very long dreadlocks. You simply brought some destruction
with your one minute drawings, making everyone to pay and showing
who the real boss is. I bet the petite one was absolutely positively
surprised as she saw herself coming alive on paper. Please tell me
what did you saw in her eyes. The 3 minute ones are absolutely
definitely gorgeous, she surely did not expected that she would
be turned into some gorgeous masterpiece. The porridge started
insanely fermenting in her belly as she saw the five and fifteen minute
studies. I like how you rendered her, and how you resurrected her emotionless
face into something unearthly and divine.
The fortyfive minute study deserves a special kind of attention from the
viewers side. Everyone should look at her and her breasts. Her face is
done in a fascinating fashion. She is looking into a big emptiness.
She is waiting for the big fly to come and lay down on her. She is
ready to be abused and to be tattered. I do not know how to express
my fascination with simple words. You brought some big magic upon
us the evening you draw these life drawings Mrs. Spot. Your high
ranked place in paradise is secured now. You have a passport directly
to the heavens kingdom, you are a hall of famer now.

Really nice paintings. I really like the two girls painting. Very soft and subtle. Though i think some parts are little blurred. The oil studies are looking really nice. the still life looks really good. the master study is looking good apart from the facial errors. the gesture studies are great. keep painting

Sorry I haven't posted this week - went back to work and got man flu. Still had to work, but no energy for anything else. Didn't go life drawing today as it wasn't fair on everyone else if I was sneezing and coughing all over the place. Hopefully, I'll do a SP tomorrow, so keep you eyes peeled.

SP = Self Portrait. It's International SP Day 1 November, so you'd best get practising.

I always knock a few years/decades off myself. It's the one chance for us lesser mortals to have something in the Finally Finished section.

Okay, I totally fucked up my SP today. It was going all right to a certain point and then I lost it. Maybe the light changed too much or I got too cocky. Here's the last version before the cock-up. I'm working at life size, found my charcoal pencils weren't covering the area fast enough, switched to willow charcoal and mess ensued. At least it isn't next week already.

    "Man flu" sounds contagious

On the last charcoal Self portrait, it looks a bit over worked and a lot of unnecessary smuggling. Where's areas of focus maybe the eyes or nose would be more tightly rendered. I'm not fan of using charcoal or pastels myself, because most of the dust ends up my shirt than on the paper...haha. I always appreciate people use the medium.

For the background if you are pinched for time. You can use the boards side of the charcoal and have one clean stroke vs using the tip to scribble in a background.
Make a sketchbook happy, feed it a tip to improve!

The self portrait looks like its coming along. I agree about the smugging but it's not ruined at all. Just push those darks and bring up the lights and VOILA! Speaking of SP Day (i had no idea that existed) I shall be doing of myself very soon. It's a homework assignment for my figure drawing class. I wonder it's a coincidence...hmmm...

Went life drawing last night. Trouble is that I'm using this mid-blue paper and I can't seem to catch daylight to photograph it well, so I cheated and used the computer to get it closer to the right colour.

5 minutes and rest are 20 minutes. As you can see I was more interest in drawing the face.

I liked the quicker, 5 minute drawing. It seems not only livelier but also more accurate.

Yeah, I know, but I was more interested in doing a portrait. Today's life drawing. 3 hour pose. Same model and pose as a couple of weeks ago, but a slightly different view. Still didn't finish. I'm going to try to get to all 3 sessions and get the same view so I can finish one for a change. This is on A2, so a lot bigger than I've been doing them in the past. Also need a bigger portfolio as it got slightly crumpled being rolled up.

It's rather cool that you're playing around with different media and paper. Do you think using toned paper helps with your figures?

    Hello there,

Hope you're doing well? Its good to be back in this SB after long time. Those traditional stuff you have done are simply great especially, those figures. It seems you have done them so easily with few details too! Anyways, im going to save them and study them myself so i may find out some answers. Thanks a lot for sharing them.

Unfortunately, no critiques from me for now, but ill be sure to check out your future works. I still haven't forgotten the advice you have given me, which helped me immensely. so, thanks again.

Toned paper helps as it stands in for the mid-tone. I've just bought a ton of it. They sent me the wrong pack (of A2) at first and told me to keep it, so I've actually got double the amount I need. I ordered blue as I like drawing on blue, but the first pack is multi-colour and won't go to waste.

devastacio, it's not quite that simple, although I'm happy that the end result looks easy. I work and rework and rework some more, building up the layers. rubbing it down still leaves most of it there to be reworked on an defined. I'm still working on the technique and am slowly getting there.

Good news is that the model is returning next week and I might be able to finish this one after all.

Your values and highlights are getting a lot sharper and help the drawing pop out of the page. Nice! Your anatomy, proportion, and perspective seem to be improving too.

I like your work ethic! I wish I still had mine. Keep up the studies! You're getting very precise, but I'd worry a bit about putting your figures in perspective. With the last figure study, the seated man, he looks a bit stiff. The lines for his hips and shoulders don't line up - he seems like he's leaning over to the right, but then his arms don't reflect that. His left arm is hanging forward in front of him, rather uncomfortably. It's a little like some invisible person is there with him, grabbing his left arm and trying to pull him forward off the stool.

The blue reclining nude is great! You may want to photograph these in better light so they won't be so grainy.

The last guy is a bit of a disaster I will agree. I must pay more attention at the beginning..

International SP Day today, and here's mine. Think I'm looking slightly wry at that bad taste joke I just heard. Tried to smile and failed. Also hair is miles too tidy. But at least it's more honest than usual and I was sober.

I didn´t even know there was something like an International SP day. Kudos for participating. I always shy away from things like that. I am not fond of live drawing and I don´t really like to show m face anyway.

Staying sober is good too. I think the whole portrait could use some more light and a better definition. (sorry)

Well live drawing is preferable to dead drawing. Don't fancy being a zombie quite yet. A number of people say it makes me look too old.

Today's life drawing. We had a different model, so I couldn't finish last weeks one. Started doing a full figure one and wasn't happy with it, so I started again. This time I was just working from the head down. The model will be back next week, so I can continue. The neck is still not right, but it does look like her.

Yes the photos are a little grainy, It would be a shame to miss all the work you put into them. You know why I dont like the big sheets of paper.
The quick 5 minute life drawing is great, It tells me a lot in very little. And your Sp Is really good. One of my favourites. I get the impression you are very confident in that one.
The original pastel one I think may be a little vertical.
