Surion: Thanks. It's hard to keep having fun all the time. Most of the time it's stressful and hard and often frustrating. But nothing worthwhile in life is easy, like someone said. I wish I started drawing when I was 16 and not 26. Nobody supports me (you people are an exception of course and it's very important), I don't know a single artist and I don't really have anything to fall back on. I just have to go deeper and to be honest, it already feels I don't want to go back. Heh.

Christian223: You are right. I should try to think and understand more. I'm mostly just copying like a machine.

    Carbono: Thank you!

Another bad self-portrait today. I'm telling you, these are the hardest. Especially the hair. Impossible?! I always look like a murderer.

The invasion of heads continues. Something else tomorrow, I promise! I'm thinking of going to the station since I have a day off and mornings are great there. To be exact, I have two day offs in a row. Nice!

Heres a little tip from my illustration teacher: to draw hair, think of it as you think when you draw a head, or an object, think of it as beign a BLOCK and not a lot of tiny lines.

The last portrait seems to be the best in my opinion. Remember to vary the values more, having specific different values for light, different values from highlight, different value from half light, and so on, http://www.fineart.sk/show.php?w=951

    Keep it up!.

I'm a bit jealous of your progress. I've been drawing since I was a kid but I dont have that kind of improvement with my figure stuff.
    keep it up.

Christian223: Yeah, I should try to use only 3 or 4 values effectively...

wilkerson: That's because you probably haven't practiced the figure. I have zero knowledge about anything else. If I try to draw environments, clothing or anything but the figure it all goes blank in my head. If I draw a tree from my head, it probably looks the same as any tree drawn by a 5-year-old. Well, public drawing has helped with clothes a bit...

Photoref sticks. Horrible stuff really, haha.

I'm thinking about stopping posting updates. I feel like it is restricting the stuff I can draw. Is that stupid? I wanted to do some muscle studies today but thought that something else is more important at my level. Didn't know what, so only these two pages today...

Dude, it would be a pity if you stopped! But I can't blaim you... You're putting way to much energy on studies. Try to have some fun with the pen sometime, and I promise it will be much easier to tackle studies!

    I hope to see more!

Dannel: Hey, I read your reply and initiated a study in relaxation. I guess I won't stop posting, but maybe a short break would do good. I'll think about it.

That rose hip study you did is by far the best you did imho, all because of the wider value range

Try also doing more expressive lines, your lines right now are clean wich is good, but they are also stiff, try playing with your lines more. Keep it up!.

Christian223: I'm glad you like it, I like it too. It's hard stuff with the lines. They always come off as stiff because I try to do an accurate copy and do the lines slowly, quite often with a pretty heavy hand.

Mindblowing news! I by myself have voted NO for the break. Here's a new sp with blocked in hair and more distinguishable values. An improvement, I would say. Far from perfect but I'm happy because it's so much better than the previous attempts. I messed the right eye pretty badly... But it's a lot easier to get at least some likeness when drawing from this angle.

Hey Taneli, your spending your time smart, with the selfportraits and studies!

doing the studies is one thing, remember to try and take all the info you get in, and then implement it on something imaginary.

Lookin good! Keep the good work up!

Lakka: Yeah, I guess I should draw more from imagination. They just always turn out to be quite bad so it's a bit discouraging. I like that head I did yesterday, though!

WhiteC: Really? Thanks! You'll cancel your words with this update...

One page of Bridgman-like heads from memory and moving to Loomis for studying purposes. Ugly stuff but bear with me for a couple of decades! It'll take quite some time with this pace, I should try to get more done every day. My shifts are only 5,5 hours anyway so I have the time. The schedule thing worked nicely for a few days but it's slipping already.

Here's a pretty fast drawing. I really do have that monkey hanging on the wall. I promise to be more productive tomorrow!

hey coming along nicely, keep up with all those studies, and try pushing your values a bit more to help give more depth and contrast. other than that just keep on trucking.

    Your studies are amazing.
And for humble beginnings, you sure do have quite a bit of talent.
I would like to see more imaginative works from you. It's much more fun, and you improve at the same time! I wish you luck

thesadpencil: Thanks, I'll try to keep it in mind.

Arsenopyrite: Heh, all you guys talking about potential and talent, it gets me a bit excited! Imagination stuff takes so much time that I feel like studies are more important for now. Once in a while it is refreshing to do imaginative stuff though and see if I have improved at all. Here's one in this update, about 1.5 hours I think.

Loomis is really different from Bridgman. I feel like I have to be very careful not to mess them up. With Bridgman I just merrily put lines here and there and it always kinda resembles the original. Huge head on that man, didn't see it coming until it was too late!

I was away for a few days visiting my parents. I took Bridgman there with me and here's a new update. Didn't draw all that much during my visit but at least something.

    Thumbs up

Hers a critique: In your last portrait, and in others, you can see that there are parts wich are too dark, and should not be so dark, try to pay more attention to the value contrasts and to protrait them correctly, in relation with their surroundings.

For example, see the eyes of the last person, the silouette is too dark, if you see a picture youll see that that part is actually dark, but does not reach such a low value, but its only darker that its surroundings, see this example:
    http://www.fineart.sk/show.php?w=77

See the lower right face, and see her right earring, its has an extremely low value compared to everything else, nothing else it the face has such a low value, so try paying more attention to values.

I hope that helps, good luck, and try doing more from imagination and correcting that, its harder, but a better way to learn faster.

Christian223: Thanks again, I'll try to think the values more next time.

Some imagination stuff today, apart from the page of Bridgman. It's fun to put huge amounts of hair on people.

Different public drawings this time, I tried to draw the underlying structure. Struggling a bit there as can be seen, but it was fun. I don't have any excuses for that self-portrait.
