    Looking to learn! Wilsty's Sketchbook.

    Introduction

Hello, name's Alex. You guys can call me that or Wilsty. Whichever you choose. I decided to cut my original introduction and just replace it with this new one.

Welcome to my sketchbook. Please, enjoy or don't. Offer tips if you'd like or feel free to just message me and chat, if you'd like as well.

    Freshman to Sophomore

    UNSURE OF STICKY!

There is a sticky saying to no longer use IMG tags but to use the attachment manager. So, I take it that means we can no longer use image tags and just post our images right here in our journals/sketchbooks directly.

I see other people still using IMG tags to post their images in their books, but I guess I'll use the manager since the sticky says to.

    End of "UNSURE" notice.

These are drawings that were done over the course of my four years at Reed-Custer High School. My teacher was a Ms. Chasteen. She's one of the greatest art teachers I've ever known. She taught us many things, but one of the things she did teach us that I never did was this.

"Practice. Don't just do your school assignments. Do your own on your own time to become better."

    I should've listened.

Here's a list of the drawings and what grade they were done in.

"Imp Guy" -Freshman Year (Doodled in class and added color with Photoshop)

"Bunny Reaper" -Freshman Year (Doodled in class and messed with Photoshop)

    "Bailey Quick Sketch" -Sophomore Year

"Observational Study: Crumpled Paper and Pencil" -Junior Year

"Observational Study: Guitar 1" -Junior Year

"Observational Study: Guitar 2" -Junior Year

"Wilsty's Scarecrow Friend" -Junior Year (Doodled while bored in Economics, messed with in Photoshop)

    "Cheenah" -Senior Year

"Eric Draven" -Senior Year (Took an image from the internet to look off of)

    "Gesture 1" -Senior Year

    "Gesture 2" -Senior Year

"Quick, Small Gesture of a Woman" -Senior Year

Still messing and trying to get the hang of Painter X.

If you haven't figured it out, I want to work on a horror video game someday.

    Facial Studies

Just trying to draw some faces as quickly as I could. I'm trying to get better at drawing faces. Not too good as of now.

    Lego Block in SketchUp

Downloaded the quickie 8 hour trial for SketchUp. This was fun to use even though I had no clue how.

    Self Portrait 01

A self portrait of me. Hahaha, back when I used to wear this absolutely terrible moustache. Smack that off of my face!

I was inspired last night when I ran across Android's 1000 Self Portraits. I couldn't believe what I had seen. In my mind, I felt that doing as many self portraits as I can may be the best learning experience and may cause a destruction of ego and selfishness. Thank you, Android, for giving me some much needed inspiration. Although I feel I don't have much of an ego, I might as well destroy what little there is.

Concept for my Game Design Class

For some extra credit, I drew up a picture using Painter X.

It's supposed to be a soldier dying in this spectral world. (Or if I wanted to be funny, a player being banned.) We had to, basically, write the script and outline for a video game. MMORPG during Medieval times on an alternate reality Earth with real world governments, economic policies, and a supernatural twist.

    Concept for a level

This was a quickie painting I did for my final in my Game Design class. We had to do a map of a level or stage in our game. Luckily for me, even a drawing will suffice rather than technical aspects.

I decided to use this as an experiment with color. Turned out bland. Hahaha!

    Another quickie self portrait

I was busy all day today and would have felt guilty if I didn't get at least one drawing or some form of practice done today. So, here's another self portrait.

Trying to get into a little more color. I've always been more of a black & white guy, but that wouldn't be much good having just that in a portfolio, now would it? Eh, anyway, here 'tis.

    Flowers For My Mom

My Mom's been wanting me to draw her some flowers. Probably, because I don't draw too many pretty things, haha! So, I found some pictures of orchids to use as a reference. Sadly, the petals look nothing like orchid petals, haha! But, I like it anyway.

I love you, Mom! Hopefully, you enjoy.

    Anatomy studies

I figured I'd start studying some anatomy, since I have a hard time with it. I got this "Da Vinci's Notes" book a couple of years ago that I've only taken a few glances at. Lately, however, I've been reading it and taking it in. So, here's some stuff I attempted to draw up from that book. Started with legs. I might do face next.

    Messing around in ZBrush

Wow! So, ZBrush is freaking fun!

This was just from the 30 day trial. I did this one a couple of hours ago just to get the feel for ZBrush. I had to watch some of those tutorial videos because I was not understanding why when I saved it it would automatically copy a new one onto the same space. Frustrated me until I found out why.

I plan on getting this someday.

I'm taking a 3D Modeling class in the fall using Maya. I have no clue what Maya is like, but if it's anything remotely similar to ZBrush, I'll have fun.

This was so cool! And such a learning experience! Sculpting is great! The only thing I've ever sculpted in my life were some dumb pots in my old elementary art classes.

    Wilsty Self Portrait 03

    A quickie self portrait.

I decided to work very fast just to see what I could get done in about 15 minutes because I had to leave to go see my girlfriend.

Things seem to flow a little easier when you don't concentrate too too hard on them. Ah, anyway.

Very quickie gestures before I go to bed.

These were some quick gestures I did before I went to bed. Enjoy or don't. Please offer some constructive criticism if you'd like. I think I've learned to swallow my ego a little bit. Not that there was much of one in the first place, hahaha!

    Yay! Vectorman!

I was messing around with the 30 day trial of ZBrush and decided to make something basic. Sadly, I can't figure out all the little odds and ends to ZBrush. So, the hands and feet were done pretty sloppy. I'm still working on figuring out how to paint it easily.

Very very quick little self portrait sketch.

This is just a really quick self portrait I did before I went to bed. I'd have felt guilty if I didn't get more than one thing done today. I decided to go cartoony with this one.

    Can't sleep.

Oh, man. The things I'll do when I can't sleep. About ten minutes into drawing this, I noticed the landscape was straight out of DBZ. Hahaha! So, I added a little guy on the cliff. Tried to get into more colors and watched a short video on the Gary Kelley Oil Pastel demo on YouTube, so I decided to mess with oil pastels on PainterX.

    For the DSG: The Smiler

Haven't drawn in a few days. Originally, I wanted to do something kind of grotesque. However, I thought I could say more with something more subtle. Doesn't look as creepy as I'd have liked, though.

    Something for fun.

I had just downloaded the "Silent Hill: Homecoming" soundtrack and got a little inspired. So, I drew up this quickie sketch. Nothing special. Working a little with lighting, though.

    Self Portrait 04

Another self portrait. Back when I had long hair and was laying in a hospital bed. I had just been wheeled to my room and was finally regaining consciousness. The surgery was a pilonidal cystectomy. This was the only time in my life I had a legitimate excuse to do nothing for two months, but lay in bed. To tell you the truth, I think the freedom I had in those two months was greater than the freedom people say you have "in school." "They'll be the greatest times of your life." I'm sorry, but having an excuse to do nothing but lay in bed and play "World of Warcraft" for 2 months was far greater than any other freedom I ever had. Hahaha! No, I do not play WoW anymore, by the way. It was sucking the life out of me and I decided to focus on school and, only recently, drawing.

    Samurai Meets Arachnid

Just trying to draw as much as possible. Three in less than a day. I'm happy. Talk about making up for lost time.

    "Samurai Meets Arachnid"

    This was a happy accident.

This one, originally, wasn't getting a dedication. My original sketch was nothing like this. Somehow, the hero became a Samurai and it just reminded me of my friend Mathew Marshall.

    Here's to you, man!

    A Room

Eh, not my most favorite sketch. Not enough detail and I'm still not good with anatomy. So, the arm is all off.

I had just watched the E3 coverage and got inspired after they showed the Natal and Milo technology. All I could imagine was a horror game that used that technology.

Still, not my favorite, but it gets the point across.

    This was for the DSG

Just something I did for the DSG earlier. Figured I'd start putting them in my sketchbook as well. That's where I link everything to.

    Studies

Holy crap, it's been a while.

Inevitable traumatic events helped aid in the delay.

Anyway, these are just some studies. Faces, hands, skulls, ribs.

The skull and rib studies I did while reading that "Leonardo's Notes" book.

Still having trouble getting faces down. Just need to do more, I'm sure.

All were done in pen/ink on paper except the still life. The still life was done with a charcoal pencil.

Just a couple quick sketches I did while reading that "Leonardo's Notebooks" book. Wanted to get something done before I went to bed.

    Faces and other parts.

Critiques welcome. They are incouraged, in fact. I need help with the human face.

I did these studies in a room about as lit as Satan's rectum. Because of the lighting, I decided to focus more on shades and value instead of detail. I had also watched an interview with Takayoshi Sato and saw his drawings and became a little inspired through them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Another Face Sketch

It started out as a real quick eye sketch and grew into a full-blown face sketch. First drawing I did on the Wacom in a long time. Hahaha, took a second to remember everything, but it was like riding a bike.

Any helpful comments are greatly appreciated.

    DSG 1484 "Quantum Bike"

For the DSG. I'll post it there next.

It said, quantum bike that uses advanced razor technology or something similar. I know this probably doesn't really fit the description, but I had fun sketching it out anyway.

    That and it's more "atomic."
