miles: Most of the time i start with a multiply layer and add some basic colors at first so i can get an idea of what palette ill be using. Then i add another normal layer on top and start painting straight. So that makes 3 layers in total (w/o counting the bg). I would really have the lines developed enough first though (even though they never are).
