Just because you're into art doesn't mean you have to be into art. In that you can really enjoy making art, but you don't necessarily have to like going round galleries or like other people's art. I for one find the old masters' work tedious in the extreme, I can appreciate their skill, but when all their famous works were commissioned by the church, you can see why a modern day atheist gets bored of old women in flowy dresses with a tit out and the baby jesus with a sixpack.
Damian Hurst is a tosser, Tracy Emin's an idiot, and it just seems to me that the only reason they pickle sharks and put their grotty, semen-covered beds on display is that they found actual artistic skill a bit hard to master.
Don't even get me started on surrealism either.

I think a redesign of the classic shooter game character would be a fun one, seeing as we haven't had anything shooty or soldier-y for a while.
so you'd have to design one of these:
    - An Assault
    - A Heavy trooper
    - A Medic
    - A Sniper
    - An Engineer

You know, the usual default classes you get in a shooter game.
I think the reason they haven't done those in a while is because.. well, they're everywhere. They're generic, they're boring, they've been done a million times, and then re-imagined a million times again. Even though I don't actively participate I'm pretty sure the purpose is to get people using their imaginations, and designing characters that have been done to death doesn't serve that purpose well.

Turner was a Romantic Landscape painter, Manet an impressionist. Neither of those painters (to my knowledge) did the same religious themes that you are quick to dismiss any historical relevance or merit at the same scale as Caravaggio or Michaelangelo. In fact, Manet even went so far to stick a middle finger to Venus of Urbino with his painting of Olympia. Whether that was his intent is not for me to say, but it was certainly the perceived effect.

Salvador Dali, nor any of the older masters who painted specifically religious subject matter were mentioned. What Lord Louis was talking about was the compositions, the gamut masks, the design choices and the subject matter. Damien *Hirst* and Tracey Emin can't paint to save their lives, I don't understand how you managed to come up with them as a potential inclusion in LL's suggestion at all. To me that whole post is a horrid display of willful ignorance.

I like LordLouis' suggestion for this very reason because it encourages people to think outside the box of and do some research into art history and see how they would apply it to their favorite characters. Though admittedly that would be a topic to do for I.O.W, because the C.H.O.W is more relevant to character design. Nonetheless I personally would love to see Link or Geralt of Rivia depicted in an Art Nouveau piece, for example. You're thinking about rehashed ideas that are pulled straight from Team Fortress/COD/Darksiders. You're trying to turn this activity into a fan art thread for your favorite video games and excluding anything else. Stop it.

*This is a site for concept art, the clue's in the name. Think though, link as imagined by Manet is no fun to draw, because Chow about what you think, not what you think other people think. I don't want to see forty people's thoughts on what Manet might imagine, because then you get forty pieces of work that are practically the same with only one thing to separate them: the skill of the artist, which means the same people will win over and over, it wont be about design any more.
**quick to dismiss? No, I've spent a great deal of time thinking about why I don't like them. I've spent a long time having to research them for various art projects in school, and even longer in art galleries since I was very young.
*** Incorporating tiny things like that into your designs is what people do at the moment, as far as I can see, LL is calling for more drastic rule changes that would force us to work like other artists, and to be honest, fuck that. I want to work like me, not like Michelangelo.
**** Of course I wasn't implying that people would start posting modern art, and frankly this is a pain in the arse to explain.
I was moving the discussion on, that's what forums are for: discussions, I'm giving my opinion about two 'artists' who have been in the pubic eye in the last couple of years, and around for even longer.
***** I'm not excluding everything, I'm giving my opinion on what I think'd work and what wouldn't. And you don't get to say "stop it", btw, what I suggest is not up to you, I have no problem with the rest of your arguments, because they are just that, arguments. I don't know where you were trying to go with that.
I like video games, a lot of people do. The ratio of people who like video games to people who don't is probably greater on this site than if you look at a cross section of the general public in the real world.
You seem not to realise that a 'Manet's link' round would get much fewer imaginative results than a "generic" and "boring" 'shooter character' round.
My favourite rounds are things like: 'redesign link if he were dropped into another game, think about what game and what he would need to survive.'
I suggested the shooter one because it was simple and actually hasn't been done on this site before. To be honest, its generic, but deliberately so, and it certainly isn't boring.

You have your preferences, I have mine, however I am not telling you to stop expressing yours, no matter how wrong I think you are. Its fucking common courtesy pal, you should still feel inclined to exercise it even though you are on the internet. So please, drop the haughty attitude so we can have a proper fucking conversation.

There's a big difference between telling people to stop doing stuff that effects you directly and telling people to stop expressing their opinions, especially on a forum like this where the original opinion is not directed at anyone.

Not liking people to keep repeating the same jokes at you over and over vs wanting people to agree with you or shut up.
what do you think is worse?

    EDIT:
I notice you ignored every other point I made and went directly for the one you thought you could zing me with.

It's sort of a melding of both I think. Even in the C.H.O.W thread, if someone gets a lot of weight for their opinions then it may end up affecting you directly because you'll end up painting what they suggest. You don't want to paint Manet, and I don't want to design generic soldier classes (Even though I don't even participate in CHOW.) I just don't like the way you just destroyed LL's post. There's nothing wrong with expressing your opinions but there's no need to be so aggressive about it.

    And I DID say:
Though admittedly that would be a topic to do for I.O.W, because the C.H.O.W is more relevant to character design.

That's what you do on the internet! And admittedly I couldn't be arsed to get into a massive thread argument about relatively trivial crap but we seem to be going that way anyway. On all other counts, you win, out of attrition to carry on the discussion which I don't feel inclined to do.

Slightly off topic but you do seem like a rather angry person. Be less angry

Just saw a history channel special on the Warrior Queen Boudica and am all inspired. It would make a much more specific brief.

She was the leader of the Iceni tribe in Roman occupied Britain and led an uprising after she was flogged and her daughters raped. Her armies took several cities and burnt down London.

Here is a description of her by the Roman historian Cassius Dio "she was 'possessed of greater intelligence than often belongs to women', that she was tall, had hair described as reddish-brown or tawny hanging below her waist, a harsh voice and a piercing glare, and habitually wore a large golden necklace (perhaps a torc), a many-coloured tunic, and a thick cloak fastened by a brooch.

Figure I'll contribute a few quick ideas:

The Tiny Mechanic - The little person inside electronic devices that makes them work. For some reason I assumed this was how things worked when I was little. :>

King Kai - The overseer of the universe. S/he lives on his/her own little planet on the edge of existence and uses sensory powers to watch over every corner of the universe. Yes I am stealing this from Dragonball.

The Old Swamp Hermit - An estranged veteran of war, left to die in the depths of the murky swamp. Against all odds he made it is home and mastered it. He now uses his environment to his advantage, setting traps and camouflaging himself.

I don't think there's been an equestrian in awhile, and some art history would be cool, so I suggest Der Blaue Reiter (the blue rider).

Avenger of the Slain : Sole survivor of a massacre who stalks and murders those responsible and tattoos themselves with the blood of the fallen, generally scarring his/her face. Can be any age/ethnicity. When at last they kill all responsible, they hire services to others. The Avenger has the power to sense who is innocent/guilty and are tasked to take as many lives at the bequest of others as they did of their own accord before they can rest at last.

You know the characters you get on the front of spirits? (Captain Morgan's rum is a good example) We could design a character for that. I don't really know what you'd call those.

Some of THESE could git here, no? <- Link

    and...

-Impoverished other planet gold miner infected/empowered by crazy mutigenic substance he accidentally unearthed.

-The Glass One - a being whose bodily fluids are all entirely made of glass (hot glass... semi-cold glass, imagine it)

-Interplanetary Sniper - a god-like assassin from the future not from this planet who can shoot and kill people from over 2 planets away (so imagine his gun apparatus, it'd be huge and crazy to get a bullet that far, like a gigantic telescopic gun looking thing)

Think Caine the longshot from Trigun

-He who saw the unimaginable horror with only one eye - So a being who witnessed a Lovecraftian horror that'd make you go insane, but he only saw it with one eye...(so it's up to you think of what that would make him look like... like twoface or with one eye totally crazy)

-Dragon Whisperer(Probably been done before) - y'know ... the Cesar Milan of dragons being badassss, doesnt have to be human, could be a giant.. would make sense... or even a little teeny girl that'd be crazier if done well!!!

-Maniac Teleport - a man with a device that allows him to teleport but due to prolonged exposure (he has been teleporting so much) has been able to teleport with out the device lately... HOWEVER the side-affects are: randomly and against his own will ending up in horrifying dimensions, losing limbs due to erratic teleportation, ending up in the vacuum of space so now he always wears a oxygen apparatus...
so imagine a guy missing limb(could've been replaced with badass mechanical ones) who looks mad and crazy and paranoid!!!

-Tiny Feeble Old being, that has Galactic Telepathy - up to interpretation

A few ideas in the Holiday spirit

Clockwork Krampus: Created by elves in Santa's workshop, this mechanical horror accompanies Santa on his rounds Christmas night, contending with naughty children as Santa leaves gifts for the good ones. Krampus on Wikipedia

The Yule Goat: An old Scandinavian tradition, the Yule Goat has taken many forms- as a symbolic animal sacrifice, a scary figure or a Christmas gift-bringer. Any of these interpretations would be acceptable. Yule Goat on Wikipedia

The Badalisc: A southern Alpine holiday tradition, the Badalisc is a strange creature ritually captured by the villagers every year in early January by a specific cast of costumed characters and led into the town to expose the sins of the community, after which a feast is held before the beast is freed. Badalisc on Wikipedia

Apologies if any of these have been done before.

Alternate party--a series of partygoers, each evolved from a very different species. A spider-evolved person, a catoid, a snakeman, an octopus girl. Maybe even weirder ones, like an Opabina or Anamalocaris descendant. The more actual thought put into it the better--perhaps the snake uses its tongue as a hand, the spider woman is dressed in webbing, the octopoid clings to the ceiling or wall.

A human character that must travel back in time in hopes of correcting a horrible atrocity by killing someone they are descended from. It would be great if you have to design the time traveler and the ancestor.

    Baby Great Old One

A horrible Lovecraftian monstrosity with cute baby fat and a pacifier, in a Escher-esque nursery.

    Past-Modern Gods

The gods and monsters of myth were immortal. So what will they look like in the future? From Medusa's serpents reading from floating books to Pele wearing the latest holofire gowns to Loki and his brood looking for a more fun planet to Kali dancing in a VR bar . . .
