Turner was a Romantic Landscape painter, Manet an impressionist. Neither of those painters (to my knowledge) did the same religious themes that you are quick to dismiss** any historical relevance or merit at the same scale as Caravaggio or Michaelangelo. In fact, Manet even went so far to stick a middle finger to Venus of Urbino with his painting of Olympia. Whether that was his intent is not for me to say, but it was certainly the perceived effect.
Salvador Dali, nor any of the older masters who painted specifically religious subject matter were mentioned. What Lord Louis was talking about was the compositions, the gamut masks, the design choices and the subject matter.*** Damien *Hirst* and Tracey Emin can't paint to save their lives, I don't understand how you managed to come up with them as a potential inclusion in LL's suggestion at all. To me that whole post is a horrid display of willful ignorance.****
I like LordLouis' suggestion for this very reason because it encourages people to think outside the box of and do some research into art history and see how they would apply it to their favorite characters. Though admittedly that would be a topic to do for I.O.W, because the C.H.O.W is more relevant to character design. Nonetheless I personally would love to see Link or Geralt of Rivia depicted in an Art Nouveau piece, for example. You're thinking about rehashed ideas that are pulled straight from Team Fortress/COD/Darksiders. You're trying to turn this activity into a fan art thread for your favorite video games and excluding anything else. Stop it.*****
