kelly x thanks for checking out my sketchbook. I see you have some nice paintings here. You said you have some problems switching between PS and
Painter. Make the keyboard shortcuts the same in both and try out and find
the best brushes in painter. You'll see that the work in both becomes quite
intuitive. I just don't like the slight change when I look at PSD file in Painter
and then in PS, some lines become thinner or something.

    Good luck, keep it up!

Talking still not done, will we ever be??

I have been working on this for EVER! & decided to ad my painting of sumi-e to the background via a layer and do a textured wall and write in faded red in Japanese, then mess it up -- make some since of the light to keep it pulp-ish - and still not done painting the poor girl... soon I hope.!?#!?

I think that textured sumi-e in the background works really well. I'm not sure, but maybe the background would benefit from being darkened towards the bottom.

About the girl, watch out for muddy colours. Generally, it's better to use a 100% hard round brush with low opacity and go in and blend manually, instead of using soft brushes. As for anatomy, her left boob is a bit flat. I think maybe you have to move the nipple(?). Are you using reference? Also, it seems that her forehead is popping out a bit much.

I think you're getting close. And about the the splatter you had before: don't be afraid to use graphical elements. You can even lay them over your subject in some places. You just have to think about where you're putting them, to aid your composition.

Keep up the good work, this'll be your greatest work yet!

To Hai! Dude they will not let me post on your sketch book thread!! I have tried several times and thank you for all of your very useful help!! I keep getting bumped off -- just wanted to tell you that I really like the things you are doing in your sketch book and want to tell you this... Kelly
I will try to finish the woman I am painting and am glad you like my sumi - E! My boyfriend is a fan of my sumi-e too and actually made me do it -- I wanted to incorporate this part of my training into my figure/pinup art but was to tell the honest truth, scared, it is very personal to me and kind of spiritual too... I hope to some day give spirit to all of the work I do -- don't worry I'm not crying. Again you totally ROCK DUDE!!! Kelly again

I'm sure you'll be sorting it out but maybe the shadows under the breasts, both hips and under the gun could be lighter and still show the form of the body. Remember that light bouncing off one surface to another is the reason why we still see forms in shadows. Feeling very Caravaggio. well executed colour-temperature on right arm and leg, good choice to have the 'fleshy' reds echo in the background. Keep going! This will be a great piece, trust in it!

Try referencing your own hands in those positions, in a long mirror, or have someone place themselves in that pose and see how the hands sit.

Those are the only things killing this right now because everthing else is nice.

"Everything must serve the idea. The means used to convey the idea should be the simplest and clear. Just what is required. No extra images. To me this is a universal principle of art. Saying as much as possible with a minimum of means."

kelly, that is awesome! The face is a vast improvement. Not much more to pick on now, but a few thoughts:

Maybe you should try twisting the position of the gun a little towards her? So that you see a little of the side of the gun. It would be easier to see that it's a gun, and I think it might be easier to paint the hand as well. Also, and you probably planned on doing this already, I think the hand going into her panties needs some more definition and hard edges. As it is now, it looks a little smudged and undefined.

I'm also loving that you extended the background. More room = more sumi-e = win. You might want to try to paint in something for her to lie on as well. Maybe a white sheet dropping off an edge, so you can get some drapery in there as well or something. Just throwing some ideas at you

Anyway, the progress of this painting is great! Keep it up!

Edit: Oh, and thanks for the kind words about my sketchbook. Weird you can't post in it...

Hi Lakka, Hai!, Matty, & Omenspirits!! Thanks for the support! The ref for gun and hands were crucial for the next step! thanks and still working -- also pushing more detail in general. This has been a hand problem because of the severe up shot of my original ref photo... "Rock Star" shot, from the floor up -- it also has been the biggest challenge so far due to ex-stream light and I wanted to push it in both of these areas to see if , well ya know? Kelly ps still working...

a 20 min sketch from figure drawing class -- trying to use "envelope technique"
from a book called "the artist complete guide to Figure Drawing" Anthony Ryder -- you capture the live figure in an envelope box out line, then break down the odd shapes... it takes more than a 20 min pose to really do it, but it's a start... I suck at free form sketch, but, continue to try

That life drawing looks great. The flow of it feels very nice, and as far as I can tell, the proportions are very accurate. The foreshortened thigh looks very good. I envy you for having life drawing sessions available.

As for your other piece, the hand looks much better. I think turning the position slightly helped. It looks a little meaner in a way, which is cool. Keep rockin'!

Your girls paintings have improved a lot from the first posting. You have a nice grasp of interesting skin tones. The last one is coming along nicely. Would love seeing more of your life drawings and further painter experiments, the one in post #18 worked great. Cheers

I love the girl and the gun, I thought the background looked flat though, like we're looking directly at it where we are looking up at the girl. maybe you could play with the perspective of the background a bit. Nice.

hey kelly! nice to see you are still working hard The progress on the "girl with gun" is going great the face looks well-formed and the position change on the hand is working. The shadow under her right breast [left as we look at her] looks kind of odd. I think maybe it's not following the contour of the body underneath the breast? only other 'niggles' are the right 'raised' leg and little finger on right hand need reffing maybe [like you have done with the gun hand]. Your use of black for shadows gives the 'pulp fiction' feel I believe you were heading for. Can't wait to see the progress on the latest wip either good work kelly!
