Hello CA!

This is my first post here so I hope everything shows up fine.

I better start by introducing myself. I'm from Portugal, have 22 years old, and until about 1 year ago I was studying computer engineering (which I kinda hated... ). Then I discovered this wonderfull site and soon I made myself believe I could draw...

...so I got out of the computer stuff and started to draw. And I love it. I started with the usual stuff (Bridgman, Loomis, Mattesi, Vilppu...), then I got into a small art-school near my house and only until very recentely did I started to get "happy" enough with my drawings to show them here (you guys scare me).

So here goes some stuff... and sorry for the crappy quality of the pictures (it's a cellphone camera):

And thats all for now. Hope to get some crits (I badly need them) cause thats the main reason why I'm here.

Edit: As for the art itself what you've posted is nice; I'm not at a level where I can effectively critique them individually, so the only thing I can impart to you is post more.

Note: in future you might want to play around with the brightness/contrast of the images before you post them - the links look a little dark. Anyways, post more and good luck!

Edit: Yeah... the brightness/contrast thing... I just formated (is this the correct word?) my PC yesterday so I still don't have any image software installed (besides Paint), thats why I completely forgot about it.

I'll ulpload better looking pics next time. And thanks for the reply

Edit: Well, don't know if it's the correct way to do it, but at least now I can see the pictures... I messed around with the brightness\contrast levels and I think this is the better I can make them look for now (cellphone photos and all...).

I'll also post some new stuff later.

Here's some more stuff. The last one (the queen) is totally messed up, specially in the hair\crown area, the hands, the prespective and the overall lack of composition. Thats why I din't bothered to finish it... but I'll post it anyway.

Cool man, I really like your style. I love that little girl with the ballon and the one where that little kid is all over those tree things. Really nice. That apple shows you still need to work on value but i like the way you did it. Very nice stuff in here. Keep it comin!

The shading in the apple piece makes it look like it's wearing a sombrero, made me giggle. =D

AmontilladoAg: Thanks! That one is one of the few shading studies I made that I was kinda happy with the result.

And now something I did last night. Only when I looked atthe picture on my PC did I realized that some parts of it are kinda out of shape (like the jar in his head) but I'm too tired to correct it right now.

how long have you been drawing? your figures are laid out pretty well with the expception of some that have small errors like long arms. (which i'm guilty of too!) also, some of your drawings have a wonderful illustration-y quality (especially the boy hanging off the tree branches, very cute!). have you thought about majoring in illustration or becoming an illustrator? just a thought.

Thanks eskanto! I started drawing about a year ago... I always had an interest in pretty pictures but only when I found out this site did I started to try to do them myself.

And illustration is actually my major interest

Started using watercolor today... and made crap right in the first two figures, but the two in the bottom are a little better, I think.

Also, I know that the anatomy in the top right one is appaling, specially the right shoulder... what can i say. I suck at drawing figures from 3/4 angles

edit: and now that I look at her again, I think there's bigger problems with her back and with her left shoulder... :sigh:... guess that having done no anatomy studies at all during the last two or three months dind't help

I think you did a great job with those watercolours actually! Is it the first time you've used them? And you've only started drawing a year ago? wow!

spirit: Well, I remember using watercolors when I was about 6 or 7 years old... so, technically this was not the first time I've used them

It was actually the first time I've picked up a brush for the past 15 years or so... I've been focusing mainly on drawing until now.

Have you ever felt like you're going backwards in your ability to draw? So much so that even the very same pencil you've been using forever feels different? Becouse that has been me for the last few days since my last update. It's frustrating... worse, it's depressing.

This is the only thing I've done since my last update that didn't ended up in the garbage bin... altough it is garbage and I was reluctant to show it here, but maybe the shame will force me to work harder.

I think all I'm gonna do for a while will be referenced studies and life drawings. There's a lot of things I badly need to learn (hands, feet, faces, gesture, hair... everything, really).

Thanks ninjacat11... however I feel like I could already be at a much higher level. Procastrination is my major enemy and when I look at the AMAZING stuff some of the members here are able to do I really feel like punishing myself for not working harder.

...and some shading studies. None of them is finished cause they where timed (about 1 hour each) and I'm slow as hell.

This tiny page will be my last update for today. I just realized that I know nothing about drawing animals, and since I don't live anywhere close to a zoo I had to resort to photos. I don't expect to learn much about the form and anatomy of animals by drawing from photos but at least it's better than nothing

Anyway, if they seem utterly unfinished it's becouse they are. It's late here and I'm already making an herculean effort to keep my eyes open.

A still life of some stuff on top of other stuff. It was a total rush job (about 20 minutes) and the results are wrong values and crappy prespective... also, I got bored and didn't finish it cause I can't shade plastic bottles in a quick and efficient way.

Guess I just wasn't in the mood for drawing today Hope I'll be better tomorrow after a good night of sleep.

Due to some personal problems I had no time to draw for the past couple of weeks. Thankfully those problems are solved and I'm back to drawing again... kinda rusty though.
