Looking for art atelier or artist who can teach 19th century ACADEMIC art in the UK

Hello folks this is just a general 'HELP ME' shout out to anyone in the UK. Unfortunately the UK's art scene is dominated by the trend towards ' modern ' art where the idea behind the art is the main factor in its success rather than the artists actual skill.

As such EVERY and I mean every art course in the UK from foundation up and beyond degree is geared towards conceptual art forms. As such there is no actual teaching of 19th century academic artistic techniques anymore.

Degree courses are populated with people who cannnot draw. Cannot paint. Cannot sculpt and the teachers on these courses reflect this.


I am looking. No PLEADING to anyone in the UK who knows of a real academic art course or art school. Hell even proffessional artists who are willing to mentor someone in the true artistic fashion of the past.

Please guys can ayone help me?

Ok, I don't know about UK. But there is one in Gothenburg. Florence academy of art has opened an Atelier there. I think it's like 30$ from London to Gothenburg. Check it out. It's a school with very high standard.

You are very fortunate to be looking at this time in the history of art education! Although such ateliers essentially vanished by the middle of the 20th century, there is an international resurgence, with a number from which to choose. None is better than one in west central France, where instruction is in English: http://www.tedsethjacobs.com/ Former students of Jacobs now operate their own ateliers in the USA and in France. Google Jacob Collins, Anthony Ryder, Michelle Tully, Michael Grimaldi, etc. Another strong tradition has descended from Atelier Lack (Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA), and includes the Florence Academy (Italy), though in my opinion no one in that group has achieved at the level of some of Jacob's former students. Nelson Shanks has founded the Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia, PA, USA. He is certainly among the very few great realists painting today.

I know I'm coming into this one a bit late, so Lavender Hill Studios has grown a huge amount since 2008.

LHS teaches representational drawing and painting. They take a lot of inspiration from 19th and early 20th century painters, but look at contemporaries such as Richard Schmid and Henry Yan as well (both of whom have given lectures at the atelier).

I've studied there for a few years to make up for what I wasn't getting out of my illustration course at Camberwell and I've grown so much from doing so. There's quite a few people at LHS who are into concept art or animation.

They do short courses and are very welcoming. Call the studio and ask for a tour if your unsure - that's what sold me.
