Vehicle Concepting With Kemp Remillard (Part 1 and 2) of 4)

Hey Guys... we've got vehicle design... hope you enjoy it!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMkNJILCc9k

    Part 1: http://store.payloadz.com/go?id=112218

    Part 2: http://store.payloadz.com/go?id=114655

This four-part series covers the process and working methods Kemp uses for designing science-fiction vehicles for the games and entertainment industry.

In part 1, Kemp utilizes a typical job sheet to assess the goals and needs of a client. Once he has his general direction he begins creating thumbnail sketches in Photoshop to begin the design process. Working in a side-view, plans are drawn up to work out issues of proportion and engineering.

Part 2 begins with Kemp choosing the three best thumbnails and taking them into Google Sketchup. The rough models are made and then Kemp takes these into Photoshop to add mood, lighting, and texture.

Parts 3 and 4 refine the processes above to further develop a single design. The Sketchup model is finalized and then Kemp returns to Photoshop to create a deliverable ortho and final illustration for a client.

The whole series provides a beautiful example of the way in which artists (and their clients) can use the iterative process to refine a rough idea into a fully developed asset. Kemp's candid narrative reveals a great depth of experience in areas of design, approach, client relations, and more.

the one at the workshop was using the same block model and process but is slightly different. This series has the whole she-bang and is a lil more in depth than what I did at the WS.

Wow, that was good, I got quite a bit out of it. Looking forward to the others. I may hang on for the others until we see if there will be a package deal though?

    Thanks Steak-tron

EDIT: Tools alone are worth 14.00 and I already have about 10 brush libraries.

Dang, I'm so glad to hear you guys are liken the video

I apologize for the length of the series but when I was planning the whole thing out it just kept getting longer and longer. I actually could've expanded it more but that just wouldn't work.

At this time, only parts 1 and 2 are collected and recorded. Jonah is working on part 2 and it should be released fairly soon (though we do have many others in the pipe, we gotta be fair here in democracy land.)

So what I'm saying is if you hold out for parts 3 and 4 you might be waiting for a few months. As it is, parts 1 and 2 come to a good stopping point and, I hope, will leave the viewer with some useable techniques to at least start concepting and sketching.

Parts 3 and 4 are more about finishing the concept and getting it ready for deliver. In other words, there's no variations of the vehicle in 3 and 4, just finishing.

So what I'm trying to say is you gotta catch 'em all

Kraal: No it's actually $69 for the whole set. And these vids aren't me working on the same piece. Each video is self contained and different but they build on each other. Thanks for the complaint.

buhlerks, Call0ps, Takkik, Rist, Jorge : Thanks for the interest guys. As I said above it might be a while before 3 and 4 get rolled out. Honestly, parts 1 and 2 are quite different than 3 and 4 and are somewhat contained. We also haven't worked out how the package deal will work so we may do 2 and 2 or all 4 together... either way that package won't be available for some time. Sorry

GuggenJoel: Thanks brutha'. Hope you're holdin' it down well in ATL. CATL4EVA!!

What i said was a question not a complaint..... I still hold my ground as to saying to stop calling these part 1 part 2 part 3 if that is not what they are .... plus just as marketing i think at least as far as i am concerned i do not plan on buying part one of something if i can not be givin an exact date as to when the other parts are released

The parts are very self-contained... we were careful about that with this one. Unfortunately I don't have an exact release date... I would tell you if I did. Part 2 isn't too far off, though.

Yea ok, It was still stated and received as a complaint... which is all good I guess but I think you answered your own question. These are called parts because that's just what they are and each part is an hour long. There's allot of material so it was broken into parts but each vid covers a different step. If you don't like the way we sell these then you're certainly entitled to you opinion.

It is a highly educational series Kemp has. This series will be four strong individual downloads, each with it's own distinctive area of production covered. This is the same stuff Kemp does for major clients like Sony or THQ or anyone else using his services. The real deal. If we put it all in one download we would not cover all the information everyone is asking for.

There were many people saying to include more technical information in these videos. For example, originally kemp did not cover as much sketchup as he has done now for the next video...but people saw magic from whit in his download but did not get the info they wanted about sketchup and 3d...so kemp has gone in and expanded his to include more info. It simply required more than one download to get it all out for you.

This stuff is for you all. I hope to see reviews and ideas shared about it. This is cutting edge work he is doing and I wish I had such knowledge in front of me when I was doing so much concept work and art. My life would have been much better because of it.

    Best,

    Jason

again...these are distinctive videos which are self contained but can also add up to a greater whole.

    I hope that helps.

yes that does help. again i would like to add using the word 'volume 1' instead of ' part 1' may be benificial. I know i talk alot about that but you have to realize I am working with alot of people here in cincinnati and i get all kinds of feed back when i suggest different dvd's tutorials videos ect..... most dont frequent forums so I am a messenger

I'm agree with Kraal, a distinction between volume x and part x woul be better. the 'part' thing let suppose it's a continuous vid that have been cut in multiple parts.
