P.O.W.! Challenge 2--Final Poll

Final Poll: P.O.W.! 2: "We'll just work out the details later."

Again, I'm very impressed, but I would have liked more than four entries. Congratulations to everybody who fought their way through to the end. The voting will be open for roughly two weeks. Vote for one artist, and just to remind you--the theme is "We'll just work out the details later," with any interpretation you feel appropriate to your story. The art could have been either black and white or color, so don't let that sway your vote, and the stories do not have to be "complete" as such, though they should make sense to at least a degree that we can follow them.

Arttorney: This entry looks mutch better than your last one. All the inked details looks good.
You need to work on anatomy and perspective so go on

funfetus: Just: Wow! I like your style, your dynamic drawing and the b/w contrast. My vote goes to you

Grief: Interesting style but I think, there are to many different technics. They don't work together. Difficult to explain (especially with my bad english knowledge)

Hannes: I like specially the first page and the last panel they are very strong in reduction.

I was hesitating between Funfetus and Hannes. Funfetus has a great drawing and good action story with it. So I pick him.

Hannes: Have a nice style, still need working but it look very stylish, I like the massive use of black that create an atmosphere, and the story works with the theme, however it a bit linear. Maybe if you leaded the audience with more mysteries like what was in the box instead of revealing what it was, it could have worked better, but that's me. A- for the efforts tho!

I have to come back with Funfetus, while your drawing is very good, there's things that tickle me off in some panels. Like the googled man running to the edge of the building, he looks like he is about to fall, like if he was pushed by a strong wind, it give him a feel of clumsiness. Also, the flashmuzzles and smokes need some special attention. I don't know if it because you use that software you mentionned in the other thread, but the smokes don't actually looks like smoke but more like cream. Smokes, gaz, flashes are light and semi transparent, so the drawing must be clear of heavy details. But overall great entry, good details on building and nice characters personalisation. Story flow as well. Keep it up ^^

Grief: I kinda like the style you create, I can see your inflence of Punk rock and underground comics. There's a feel of Frank Miller as well. I however can't follow what is going on, but I'm an ignorant guy, so forgive me :/.

Arttorney: I don't know what to say. While it a major improvement over the last entry, the storytelling is not attracting and I have to reread it over again and I barely get the point. Don't create flatlined lenghts sequentials, it kills comics, go straight to the point, or create a dense atmosphere or you'll loose audience. Just look at Hanse entry, he covered his lenghts with dramatic shaped and shaded panels, which create some mysteries that suck the audiences in. In other word, looks for composition. Will Eisner have good books about it (McCloud too but it not simple to read, however he's a different school and much detailed).

I was going to vote for Funfetus but ended up with voting for Grief. Reason being that I discovered new things about Griefs comic after each time I had read it.

As for Funfetus comic was a good traditional action piece and that's about it. Characters that work good together and fast paced action. I liked how the detail had some real meaning in this one and that it wasn't just some phrase.

Arttorney: What did I just read? I like it because I dont get it. It's like a really stupid joke that somebody has to analyze and that is humour. I think that your drawing skills are going to be your biggest issue if you are going to start to make sence with your stories.


As for my own, I have huge issues with backrounds since I cant make them fit in a panel so I tend to use a lot of black. I had a hint about what I was doing but then I changed my mind about the story in mid-way and then there had to be an animal and... you get the point.

I was REAL tempted to vote for Hannes. That giraffe almost got me. I went with Grief, because I feel that he had the best narrative flow -- his comic most clearly tells the story visually. To me, that's what this is about -- effectively using the form.

I guarantee you that has nothing to do with the software I used, and everything to do with having never drawn that kind of stuff before, and not knowing how to do it. I got the same comment several times in other places I posted these pages.

My apologies for being remiss in congratulating the winner. Funfetus scores a well-deserved and resounding win for this entry. Actually, I was tempted to vote in this particular challenge, but had trouble making up my mind--there were just too many good points in each to deal with...
