Its great to see you doing these paintings as its clear you love the process of creating them. I'm not huge on abstract stuff, but perhaps thats because I have not yet explored it myself!

If you really want to get better at drawing from life, and painting realistic things, perhaps you should put a bit less time into the abstract for a while...it all comes down to what your goals are and what will make you happy, and if thats abstract so be it! I would like to see more longer life studies, as they should benifit all aspects of your art. Keep doing those basic head studies and then do a self portrait to challenge yourself and apply the knowledge see you

Jakers you are right man, I am taking my second figure drawing class and drawing 2 this semester so it should be good for me.

In the meantime here are some pictures of a self portrait I did of myself with a mirror around 2 hours with charcoal, an hour and half charcoal portrait of a classmate in figure drawing today, and finally an abstract charcoal i did for drawing II.

Definitely a sharp eye, those portraits are very good...for what It's worth, I think you should improve on colors and on the dynamics of the poses, I particularly enjoyed the colors the flower on page 2 and of the pots on page 1, very vibrant and lifelike.

Well here is the finished statue study. I used just a mechanical pencil because it was comfortable for me but it did take a few hours. On a 22inch. I know there are many things wrong with it but it is one of the first times I really havent used any grids or anything and just drew it from scratch so I am somewhat proud of it due to the time crunch (homework assignment). Again sorry for phone picture but I will get better quality pictures soon.

I really like alot of your stuff!
I think you should definately continue to do fully referenced stuff cause it's great for taking in a sense for detail.. learning to take notice of the graces in subtleties and also great for rendering as I think is evident in your thread! :U
as for using references for anatomy and such I think it's good to keep doing both referencing and imaginative... use a reference as much as you can but draw the figure from another angle. that's been most useful for me. and for school and stuff that way it's all your effort no matter the amount of ref.
so ref ref ref!

something I've found just as useful also is to ref as much as possible of what illustration you find the most tasteful, most graceful etc.. the artistics, not anatomical correctness etc.

hope to see more! and work mostly on what's most fun to draw is important.

great work-ethics man.. keep it up! you can only get better man.. don't get discouraged from no-replies or whatever.. just keep at it and do art for yourself..

For now your digital stuff is really weak because i am pretty sure you're rushing it a lot. You should slow down the process of making art a lot.. think of why you're doing what you're doing.. and through that way you'll probably be able to use more of what you've observed. Its very necessary that you find a way to combine what you've studied with your imagination.. otherwise you'll keep studying it forever and it won't stick.. so mix it up!
