edit: btw here's a little something motivational over at reddit. I posted about being frustrated with my art not progressing. Got an overwhelming response and I've since painted my arm sore. Let's hope it lasts.

Great face studies and the forms of the mountain looks convincing which for me at least is the biggest challenge. I've got just two crits: the color of the sky and the shadows on the snow don't seem to be in harmony since snow should reflect the sky color. I'd change the sky because the turquoise on the lower part looks too saturated to be natural. Also, even though you've managed to get some nice variance on the snow patterns, I think the rendering suffers from using the same small round brush for all of it. Keep the size varying and try brushes with different shapes. And this isn't really critique but more often than not there'd more snow covering the top of the peaks. Right now the top border seems erased out if you know what I mean.

On the painting of the old man, the colors on the suit look fantastic but the shadows of the skin seem to lack some saturation which makes it look dead.

Trying to catch up on my anatomy and face studies and generally trying to get comfortable with sketching in on my wacom. Lots of stuff I haven't saved, mostly posemaniacs scribbles etc which nobody wants to see. I'll get back to painting once I get bored of drawing people again

Great studies! Again, the facial expressions look top notch and great values too. Posemaniacs figures look right but the lines look corrected. Remembering that they're gestures, not anatomy studies, I think it would be good to your line quality to let go a bit of the focus on accuracy hindering you from looseness with them. Try drawing 30 sec poses without lifting the tip and without worrying about crossing over the figure or negative space to get to the other side. They'll look messy at the start but they'll teach you line economy. Some of the lines on the other sketches look great though and judging by the horse and bull heads, your brush economy is definitely improving. Keep it up!

Damn, has it really been 14 months since I updated this? I haven't drawn much in that time either, but since I've been trying to draw more lately I'll post some highlights from the last year. Posting everything would take hours so I'll pick and choose the interesting ones.

I skipped about 100 study sheets and 50 other things not worth taking the time to upload. The stuff I did upload should be in chronological order.

Those GoT portraits are awesome! The forms look solid and I like the hatching-like brushing style.

Some stuff I've done recently. I have too much stuff to upload again so I'll just post the best. I managed to draw at least 30 pages of Bridgman studies, including the entire Constructive Anatomy book from cover to cover. Plus at least another 30 pages of misc doodles and photo studies. Drawing every day these days.

Strong updates!

The portrait sketches in post 137 have a good looking sketching style, I especially like the hatching style and lighting in the one on the right. Good palette, values and brushwork in the skull studies too!

On the monk, you seem to have used a pretty small brush for rendering the folds and face. I like the hatching style of this study for example, but when you don't want to show hatching, I recommend putting stroke economy ahead of accurate blending with a small brush. Take a look at how Sargent painted dresses (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) and how accurate and pleasing to the eye they are with few strokes.

On the statue-like thing, I think the lighting and sense of form are very successful, it looks solid when I squint my eyes.

In the last post, great attention to detail in that ornament! Looks like a church window with a bowling theme. I like the overall pose of the rogue girl but the torso looks a bit long and the neck a bit short (or shoulders are too high). Also, you've painted the limbs straight like pipes, I think a hint of muscle definition would be needed there.

I like the variety of good studies you're doing, keep at it!

I've been working again. Today with the skull studies I felt like I found a cheat code or something, with the technique. I wrote down something about "local contrast = value" and doing details before shadows. Came up with the idea through how the eye perceives the light side to have more detail and contrast than the shadow, or something like that. I like how it looks, even though the technique still needs some defining.

Ahri the 9-tails fox was 6 hours, greyscale cosplay girls 30 minutes each from spcats.net (I think), skulls were about 30-45 minutes each from http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=168512.

Dang man thats a lot of gestures aha. I would say doing a more concentrated amount of studies with a higher degree of accuracy would be more beneficial to your figures, it can be easy to get carried away with quantity But your stuff looks great man, that new 9 tails piece has very nice light and strokes

Working a minimum of 5 productive hours a day not including breaks from monday to friday and whatever I feel like on the weekends (ends up being more than on work days). Here's some selected studies from the last few months. Other than these I still do gesture warmups daily which I think this thread has enough of already so I'll leave those out.

Nice studying routine! The Bouguereau portrait study looks great, you nailed the facial features and it looks traditional, I love the strokes with the rake brush! Two other studies I like the brush strokes in are the lighthouse and the whole turtle. On the turtle, you've implied the texture well and there's variety of detail level. What bothers me a bit in the Bouguereau little girl, octoberfest girl and especially the turtle head is that there's lots of little brush strokes everywhere. Try to focus them on the points of interest and leave rest of the pic softer/more loose. I think you could study more hands, they're often too small or have shaky construction.
