I like these color studies, I really need to work on some of those. Are these made digitally or physical media?

here are the some of the ones i've started. I'll add more as I can get to them. I'm glad you don't mind more people being interested in your sessions.

Davi: I'm impressed with your time limit!

finally took 1/2 a day off and finished up another study.

it would seem the thread is a little stale but i still like doing these.

    Color Study #01

This will sound silly, but this is actually my first color study (!). Usually I barrel ahead and do stuff, so this is a cool exercise. Being the first one, I didn't know how far I should go detail wise. I created a color palette swatch set from the original, but feel I could have sampled more colors (I used 23 colors).

Mentor me, please, oh wise one!!!

i think the object of the color study is to capture the mood in color. are your light areas warm or cool? are your shadows warm or cool? do you have more than one light source and are they opposite temperatures? plus you might use some colors in the study to quickly push those lights one way or another that might just get you to open up your palette a bit, like using that turquoise in those cool shadows.

i was wondering about picking colors myself. i avoided sampling the image, since I might not be able to sample something in a future project. so, i'll either mess with the color mixer so i get a better feel for using it and where my ranges will fall. since i love using pastels i miss my "crayon box" selection. sort of a limited palette. so i found some great samples and have been trying to stick with some colors that could easily be seen in life. I'd like to here what Jens think of this also. i'll post the palette i've been using too.

aaronmiller: Very cool! I appreciate the input, and the color swatch example you provided.

pondering: I do wish there was a common/universal color profile that everyone used. Especially since there are now trillions of colors available on some of the 64 bit machines/OSes. As it is now, photos are predominately digital, sampling would be the only way to insure that the client's wishes are followed. Unfortunately, this is because not many clients know to save their images with a color profile, making it easier to match what they wish to see. For all of my work on personal projects, I use sRGB IEC61966-2.1, and if my images turn out too saturated, I adjust it over all on color levels in Photoshop.

From my scenic art days, I learned to match color by eye (even when the tints available were only a fraction of what is available today), but that was with concept designs being provided by a set designer, so the palette was picked already. Should a person, when now providing the concept designs for others to follow, choose to interpret loosely and if so, how wild should one go?

Strictly speaking for myself, I hate to redo anything (personality quirk/disorder), so I mostly enjoy having a clear understanding of what is expected of me before I begin. That, and my time so limited that I can't afford to invest days on anything due to client uncertainty (I do get many of these kinds of clients, unfortunately).

currenty I use proPhoto RGB, it offers the widest gamut available. and you can always dumb it down to any other profile.

Most may already know of this, but for those who don't, here's a cool place to play with colors, and see other palettes created by folks from everywhere: http://kuler.adobe.com/

Just for the sake of me trying to learn...

    aaronmiller:
    If you're interested...

    A small experiment:

I watched the dvd: "Hero" directed by Zhang Yimou, with production design by Hou Tingxiao. This film, in my opinion, displays the greatest use of, not only color, but vibrant mood colors, to help tell the tale.

Attached is a sampling of color from two scenes. Both were sampled, on my honor, completely by eye.

If you have the dvd or can rent it, please check out the two locations: 1st row: The Emperor's Palace (once Jet Li is within 10 paces of the king), and 2nd row: "In the House of Chess" (the battle between "No Name" and "Sky").

Tell me, if you would, how close am I?

    and

If I am lacking, what colors do you see that I have not?

For anyone else reading this post, what other colors did you see?

i guess i've never really looked at images like that to breakdown their individual colors. i've always proceeded with more overall color feeling. is it warm? cool? saturated? dull? contrasty?

    Nice work!

And, I don't think it matters that the images are not from the same collection. I think those guidelines were for the folks in the official mentoring thread. For myself, I'm doing only one, and just to get feedback, for practice. (But, I do hope to get some mentoring at some point, whether from fellow "mentees" or mentor artists...)
