Hello people, this is my sketchbook and it will be geared towards bettering my achilles heel, drawing human.

Up to this point i have always been avoiding drawing human,well no more.

I will draw every day at least something resembling a human (if you strech your imagination a mile) and uppload here new stuff every week.

Hey there, thanks for the visit!

Nice start on a sketchbook. You have some fun creatures there, and a fun use of colour. I like the background a lot on the one with the purple bazooka creature!

The last ones with the anatomy sketches are on the right track, but you should watch your proportions. Are the last ones drawn from reference? You should really focus on drawing from ref if you don't already. That helps you improving your proportions a lot. Your line is also rather messy and undecided, you should have that in mind while sketching, try to use less strokes with different strenght. Something I'm working on as well, it's easier said than done!

Keep up the good work, and definitely keep posting! Don't be put off by the lack of replies, they'll come eventually

Asab: Thank for reply, i drawed some pages from reference and try little by little to get more confidence in my lines. I quess i have to come up with a system how i divide my drawing time between reference studies, free drawing human poses from mind and just fun stuff so i will be making all of them in future, not just fun stuff.

Your creatures and whatnot are great -- very charming. It is clear, though, that humans are your weakness. I really recommend the Loomis books, as well as whatever Bridgman you can get your hands on. Really read these books, and copy from them, making sure you understand what it is that you're copying. It'll help you a ton. And any life-drawing you can manage, even if it's just out at a park or cafe, will do wonders. Good luck!

Those last studies are looking good, esp.the hand ones. I guess there's not much to add, just keep it up and draw! And yeah, funfetus is right about Loomis, his books are excellent.

Nettle_Mountain hi, thanks for dropping by my sb. Funfetus has just recommended you the best books to practice fundamentals. I like your experimenting with colors also.
You have some very expressive creatures. You have to keep practicing a lot to get the human figure right. Try to post all exercises, someone in the community will take a look and suggest some tips for progress for sure. Keep it up dude.

Real life drawing from a model, 2 minutes per posture. I think the time was too fast for me, i didn't have time to think anatomy in my mind or make conscious notes, only scribbled lines in panic.

Those little poses on the down right are from the other paper downsized, someone told i should try to uppload all the sketches so i put there few more.

I'm not very good at drawing humans either, but since you like critique, I'll try to give you a bit of that.

I think so far the biggest problem is in the proportions. In your first post, the sketch at the bottom: all the people have the head too big and the legs too short. In the newer sketches, the proportions get a bit better, but the legs are still a bit too short.

I find it a bit funny/cute how you draw men with rougher lines (the things you draw for fun have very fluid and smooth lines, I like those better.) But I think this will get better in time too, as you get more used to drawing humans.

Don't rely too much on photos. For the beginning it's ok, but if you use photo reference too much and no real models, your work will become flat and without depth (like mine is).

The hand sketches are really good, no problem there that I can see. Keep working, maybe you can try some portraits too. I'll keep an eye on this.

TheGnoll: thanks for visiting, i think i will try some animal anatomy/bone struckture next and try to draw a bit more varied all kind of things.

Kuutamo: That was fast! If your name comes from a finnish song i know, my hugbeasts will personally skin you alive and use it for filty, filty purposes. (when i was a small child my father tortured me by playing this song in a car about 10.000 times, usually non-stop)

About critique, you are right. My heads are too big and legs too small, i have to memorize that 8 heads system and draw reference pictures about it and propably make some head size-upper body studies.

"I find it a bit funny/cute how you draw men with rougher lines" Yeah, i am chauvinist bastard and i believe woman should be made from smooth helpless curves while crown of the creation, men should be carved from the stone. (It is only natural)

One thing you might try is some more life drawing as opposed to drawing from photos. It's surprisingly different.

I drawed some face practise at train to find out, GODDAMN! I CAN'T DRAW FACES AT ALL !!! and so decided to do some studies from the photos

Few updates, studies from mind at school at left. My girlfriend is doing a series of abstract paintings so i thought about trying myself as well, i like it somehow...


well, tried to do some kind of desert tribe madness thing but i quess you have to put up also the stuff you are not so sure about.



Does anyone have good tips about making the backround on general ??? (should the sky be darker or lighter than the ground, should the fields on the horizon turn lighter or darker to get depth in picture?)

Hmm.. it seems you get the proportions right when you're paying attention to it (like in those body studies), but when you do creative stuff you draw the legs too short again (in the tribe drawing :p) Yes, I'm going to nag you about it until you get it right, that's why I choose this torture-related nickname.

As for the backgrounds, things get more faded and lacking detail in the distance. So, use lighter colours and less contrast for the background.

Hey, thanks for coming by my book. I agree with a lot of Kuutamo's crits above. The proportions on your people are off in a couple places - as well as anatomy. For example, the dude in the tribe picture holding the spear, his left arm (viewer's right) has a MASSIVE deltoid. Much too big. Obviously, it's more pornounced because he's holding the spear, but watch in the mirror as you lift your arm up like that and you'll see the way your shoulder joint twists won't let the muscle show like that. I had a teacher who after every class would tell us to go home and stand naked in front of the mirror every night and move and watch our muscles. Sounds freaky. Works...mostly.

I'm envious of how you're always drawing the FULL figure, however. That's the hardest part of drawing and I've noticed in my own work I avoid finishing off the feet or drawing the full figure quite a lot. Keep doing that and eventually you'll see what is working and what isn't.

hmm... very interesting. The human anatomy is a bit off, but then again we arent all the same. You keep switching between cartoony and realism. i dont know if this would help but try sticking to one. when you go cartoony you tend to lose proportions of the anatomy. althought i like the clash between the two. TIP: use what you know to draw without ref, even if you have to clash things together. hope this helps

Kuutamo: Thanks for tips, i have been drawing with a intention about 2 months for now so this might take a year to get these close enought anatomically (maybe lifetime...), but im not in a hurry.

Please keep on nagging, maybe i'll get there little by little (keeps gnawing pencil)

snubbed: Yeah, you are right it is too big. Have to try to correct this in future posts, also i will try that mirror tip (girlfriend propably have to drag me away from the mirror...)
thanks for the tips, it is hard to draw always full fiqure but i made my mind up that it is whole pain or no gain at all. (im still bad drawer thought..)

Lostinthought: Well i try to make up my own style to draw humans, completely realistic choise seems to be a bit boring for my purposes and full cartoony too naive, some kind of synthesis would be allright but it propably take some time to manifest itself.
I have to look out for my proportions,many people has pointed this out so i will try to learn them harder.
