    Quickie.

Thesadpencil- thanks for the visit. I will definitely be doing more of these.

Faust- Thanks. Hmmm... economy with shading... I suppose it is the same idea as line economy? Perhaps you'd be willing to elaborate a little more?

I'm back at the perspective stuff from class. Prismacolor marker study. Those things are a beast. I learned a lot while working through this one. Anyone with advice on the use of Prismacolors will win a special prize.

    Haha I don't know anything about line-economy (Hey, maybe that's a problem--- )
Whatever, what I mean is basically, use your lines when hatching to go by the edges of the object, make it 3D in that sense. Also, very important, stick to one technique at a time! When crosshatching, don't use random lines in another segment of the picture and stuff like that. Oh and last but the most important: Always communicate something new with your shading, don't push planes that are already visible. Here are some very bad and simple examples of simple hatching with pencils (It is digital, so it looks not so good, but hopefully you get the idea)

Not that a outline picture cant be finished .But its just what comes to my mind when i see it.Maybe its because when you add some shadows and the picture becomes more real (with volume , lightning). So i think more realness means more finished for me. I gues thats it

I should have given notice ahead of time, but I didn't. Not dead, still drawing. I took a bit of a posting break for a while--I just didn't feel like it, and it seemed to take too much time out of every day. I will, however, resume full updates tomorrow. I do not think that I will maintain daily updates any longer, but I hope to update at least twice a week. This fits into my schedule a bit better.

    Previous replies:

Faust- Thanks a bunch for this. This is the stuff that makes CA so great. I have been trying to employ your ideas, especially the one about always communicating something with my shading. I think that this one is indeed very important- it just took you to point it out to me. PS: line economy, as I understand it, is the idea of using only lines that you need to, just like the shading- always communicate something with your lines.

Ohomoho- I know exactly what you mean. Rendering certainly gives something that element of real that lines can't always achieve. I was just stirring up trouble, more than anything.

    Faust- Yes.

Toxdel- Amen. I draw becuase I enjoy it, and I will do my best to keep it that way.

Again: full update on Thursday, April 3rd. (tomorrow)

Just so that I don't post without an image:

Finished marker interior rendering. I've had this sitting around for quite a while, I just forgot to scan it. Crits eagerly anticipated. Edit: this scan came out really fuzzy- once I get the drawing back I'll try to re-scan.

well I suppose it's good news that you're not dead I really like that interior drawing although i think it could use a greater range of values. more darks, more lights... things like that. also I haven't forgot that you still need to show us some more colored drawings ....

    The promised update.

Rockhart- I suppose it's good to be alive. The interior value really could use a greater range. I did learn a lot about marker work in the process, though, so mission accomplished, to an extent. Color drawings should be coming next week, I think. I've got to do that same interior night shot, lit by the fire place, in color. It's going to take a lot of practice, and I plan to post it.

This stuff is a selection from the last week or so. I'm working in a new, bigger, sketchbook now. I like working bigger.

QUESTION: The sketchbook is bigger--should I make the images bigger? A lot of detail is getting lost, but I don't want them to be too big.

Neat progress man, I like the volume. The masquerade page was my favorite of these latest ones- I think the volume was handled well.

    More adventures

Retronym- Thanks, man. I had another friend who liked the masquerade page too. Huh. I never thought anything of it.

I'm still on this inspiration high. It's great.

This is my first successful self-portrait. There are several errors, but I'm still at least a little bit proud. This is something that I couldn't have done a year ago.

The last page is good, mostly I think because of the control over your lines you had in the portrait.

Your sketchbook shows a lot of imagination and is a lot of fun to look through. I like your sketching style. That prismacolor interior design looks pretty nice too. I need to work on using those myself. Good work.

    Moving right along...

Retronym- Thanks. I think that the ridiculous amount of time I spent working only in line actually paid off a little. Lucky me.

Ohomoho- Carl Dobsky paints an amazing portrait. I was trying to focus on directional shading, using his brushstrokes as a guide.

Crazy Pills- Hey, new visitor! Welcome to the jungle, and thanks for the comment. Prismacolors are a totally new thing for me. They don't work like pencil, and that messes with me. I guess I need to branch out more, but I like graphite.

Apaulo13- Thanks. Glad I could inspire, but seriously, check out some other work here. Way more inspiring stuff on this site. I'm gonna make you post your stuff, you know. I know where you live, so you can't hide.

This one's large-ish too. I'm stuck on this drawing thing. No complaints.

It was nice outside, so I was sketching outside

Sweet stuff, good output. I like how your progressing, my only critique right now is on your figures, it seems like you loose sight of the shape inding methods you employ in other dimensions of drawing from life when you start doing a body. Remember, your just putting marks on paper, dont draw a body, draw shapes that create the right illusion.

Lucian Freud is awesome, by the way.

    Dear everyone,

Thanks for the support. I'm a jerkhead. I'll return the love soon.

    Sincerely,
    Sedig

Tokotewhero- Thanks, I've been focusing on tonal work lately.

Retronym- Lucian Freud is awesome, and thanks for the tip: I didn't think about the figures like that until you said something. Good catch--I wasn't really looking when I drew them, and I should have been. Next time, baby.

Spacemod- Life drawing is my friend. Make it yours, and it will love you long time.

    Thesadpencil- thanks bro-ha

    Faust- I love you too.

So it's not that I haven't been drawing, it's mostly life catching up with me. I have one final exam left, and then I'm done with my first year of college. These last three weeks have been the busiest of my life, and after tomorrow I can relax. I just finished studying, and I wasn't ready to got to bed yet, so here I am. Just one image, but it's in color, for Rockhart. I expect more regular updates to resume next week.

Woohoo! Somehow I like this one the best: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...1&d=1210810727
    Can't say why tho

I know you're doing this just for fun (Aren't we all?), but what about some good old anatomy stdies inbetween? I'm talking Bridgman here. Anyways, whatever you do, don't stop.

    Kickin' it.

Faust- I spent more time on that dock than anything else, so I'm glad you like it. Concerning anatomy studies--I actually just picked up two of Hogarth's books from the library, and I have several of Bridgman's on order. My tentative goal this summer is to be able to draw a moderately convincing human figure from imagination by the time I go back to school. We'll see how it goes...

These are all from the last three days--I'm not in scholl, so I gots me more drawling time.

Yes, Koppa is one of my favorites, too. Seeing you busting those exercises is inspiring as hell, your lines get more confident and beautful everytime! small cris on those duck, though, the hatchwork seem a bit out of form, rendering them a bit flat.

    .bump.

    Hunterkiller- Thanks for the props!

Faust- The more of Koppa I see, the more I like. I'm trying to work on line confidence, so it's nice to hear encouraging words. Also--good call on the duck. I was lazy.

    Shtuff:

Faust was right about the hatching on the others, so I revisited the ducks. This worked out a bit better, but it still reads flat, I think.

I've started some Hogarth studies, so we'll see where it takes me... I expect to post some figures from imagination as soon as I draw them...

awesome stuff on page 5 man, really starting to let your imagination run wild on paper. Keep working on faces, they seem a little wonky around the eyes. Also push those values a bit more on some of the pieces, It really helps to let the piece pop out.

    Keep it up!
