To get started: these are an assortment of things from the last year. No particular order. Feel free to ask questions about any of them. All are from a reference of some kind. Thoughts/critiques appreciated.

(edit: Sorry for the shoddy scan quality. I got it figured out by page two or so. If ever I'm feelin' really ambitious, I'll rescan and repost)

Hey there sedig, looking good.
I just think you should try to lower the contrast a little on the scanning, so we could se better the nuances of your rendering.
Nice rendering on the wooden doll too!

The only thing that stands out to me is your line quality, most of this seems scratchy and a little difficult to read. Not unreadable, but like reading at dusk. Other than that I love your rendering.

i like it alot but i agree that you need to tone down your scanning... my fav. would have to be the side portrait (perhaps a self portrait?) keep it up and post more !

I turned down the contrast on the images from the last post. Hopefully they will read a little bit better now. Getting these images to show correctly might be an adventure for a while. Anyone have tips on how to get them to show more clearly? Right now I have to scan and then resize in ms paint. That's probably the problem.

Carbono- Thanks. I did lower the contrast on the previous drawings and the next batch. Hopefully I can indeed keep it up.

Retronym- Though I'm sure my line quality needs work, I think the scratchiness is a result of poor scanning. Maybe this next set will be better. We'll see.

Rockhart- that profile portrait is actually of a friend. I got decent likeness, so I am happy with it for the most part. It was initially sketched in felt tip pen, and then I went over with marker.


These are further selections from the previous year's work. I'm trying to set up a starting point. Hopefully by the end of this week my posting will be caught up with my drawing, i.e. I will be posting what I draw on any given day.

i agree with the other post. drop the brightness and increase the contrast on your scans s o they show up better.

You dropped your gauntlet in my sketchbook, and i thought i'd bring it back.

Careful where you throw 'em, because damn they're tempting to pick up. Perhaps we can do some Guggemmaneuver vs. Illinois full-color moleskine in a week challenge? i'm willing to bet mine will be better and more expressive. let's try and set this party up for the spring when things are blossomming and the putrifying dollops of blood slowly making their way toward the lazy and polluted mississippi river will be less obvious...

also, with my chronic allergies i can work some snot into the page! yay!

I think I've got scanning figured out. The images seem to read better, so that should be improvement, if nothing else. I may rescan the previous images this weekend, or sooner if I feel particularly ambitious.

Andrew- I'm happy to be back. The scans will be caught up shortly, I think. Nesti was probably going overboard. ::::: The first semester was pretty good, I think. I have a design class that meets for four hours, twice a week. Lots o' drawing. We focused on technical drawing for a while, then got on to the good stuff. We had two really big projects (mixed in with infinite, time consuming, yet still excellent smaller ones). The first was a progressively zoomed view of a building: two drawings and a model. The final project was called "walking into the perspective" It was a great project. We had to insert a circus into a one point perspective street scape. Included a rendered site plan, 26x30 drawing, and a basswood sectional model. If you want more details, pm me.

ccsears- I'm from a little town called Morrison. Northwest, east of the Quad Cities. I think I took care of the scan problem

guggemmaneuver- Uh oh. You brought the heat. I think I'm gonna pick up your gauntlet. Better? More expressive? We'll see. The results can be nothing but positive. The stress may kill me. I can't wait. We'll set this up once I get settled into a routine here at school. It's on like Donkey Kong.

Really nice atmosphere in your life drawings! Especially in the people - they capture so much. The last mannekin's legs are a little off (the far leg) - I know you know this already, but by drawing attention to it, you'll keep that particular situation in mind the next time

Great life studies, i really need to start doing these! The amount of art you do is nice too, great practices!
My only advice would be: The noses, in most of your portraits they are looking too big or too small! Other than that, looking good!

I saw your post in green fire's SB, just so you know, lalovergel is a HE, not a SHE. but it's ok.
About your post on my sketchbook, yeah, the chiaroscuro and crosshatching diagrams seem to be vary light, but it wasn't something i did by myself, it was a class excercise, and i only had a 4h pencil to work with that day. Nonetheless I will repeat it and show some good darks. Thanks for the advice. As for you work, i can see you have a lot of idea on handling value, even the loose renderings are good at popping out.

Thek- You are completely right about the mannequin's leg. One would think that I would have the blasted thing memorized by now, but no sir. Thanks for catching that. I'll do another drawing of him, and hopefully I'll get it right this time.

Carbono- Noses pose problems for me. I often lose part of them in the area around the eyes. The only thing that I can do is keep at it.

Lalovergel- Oops. I owe you an apology. They say assuming makes an ass out of you and me, but I'm the ass. Thanks for the look through.

Retronym- You put it so concisely. Shapes and tone, shapes and tone. I need to slow down and really focus on them.

Next batch:
I'm getting closer to fully caught up. Two more days, tops. A lot of these were drawn at Starbucks. I was trying to focus on gesture. Hmm, these showed up smaller. Scanner still owns me. If it's a problem, ask and I'll enlarge them.

I see most of you dark darks as being one directional and a little hasty, see what happens when you slow down for a second and really nail the blackness and hatch based on contours of the subject. I'm impressed by the your dedication (evidenced by the wealth of material posted).

sedig—> glad yr down for the challenge... should be really interesting... do you think fatty would be down? when i said illinois i meant that i wanted to beat him too. lol. anyways... you gotta sponge all the art knowlege ya can off that codgery byastad... specifically with regards to line economy and confidence / observing things the right way. thanks for the happy yellow props

Here we go again.

Retronym- Good point. When I put in my really dark darks, I usually just grind away. I'll see what happens if I pay more attention to the shapes underneath. Also, the post size is going to shrink eventually. I'm still trying to catch up with myself.

Guggemmaneuver- I think it would be really, really interesting. I don't know a lot about color, but by the end of the week I think that I would know at least something. I have nothing to lose. I'll bet we can convice the fat one. Maybe with our powers combined we can defeat him. Maybe. I'll send him a PM, and see if he responds.

The last few pages are nice...You seem to have a good eye.
I would suggest you to be more careful with your hatching.
Hatching should follow the form it's representing...
Right now some of your sketches are a bit messy and it distracts the eye...
A shame because you have cool stuff in here...

You really are continuing to show off the way you can see tone - I'm jealous - keep going!

The last batch of drawings in my opinion are the best ones you've done so far - especially the period pieces - even though you haven't hatched them, I think they're really nicely drawn. Creatinity has a point when he says 'some' are a bit messy but I can understand that because you're obviously shading at real speed - there are bound to be some casualties of line and yet, your drawings still pop out. I'd be interested in seeing what Creatinity has suggested though - using the other way of hatching and making the lines follow the form as opposed to uniformly directed.

Hey Sedig, thanks for stopping by my sketchbook. It's good to see you've come back to CA after being gone for a while. You're work is looking good. I like your use of lights and darks. Keep it up!

Holy crap. Three days. I blame the databse update or whatever was going on for the first missed day, but for the other two--no excuse.

Carbono- Thanks. You keep it up too.

Creatinity- I think you're right. Hatching with the plane is definitely something that I need to be conscious of. I'll see if I can drill the concept into my thick skull.

Thek- Thanks. I like the period pieces too. Watteau was an excellent draughtsman. I would love to be able to produce the kind of things he did.

Retronym- I'm caught up today! Finally.

Megamax- It's nice to be back. There have been some changes, but things are still pretty good here.

Another day, another update.

Carbono- Thanks.

Most of these were done during classes. The last two are for the latest architecture project. We have to draw mechanical objects and eventually make enormous models of them. I put a Jim Dine spin on the tools.

Not done drawing today, but I wanted to get in an updatein case the site goes down again. Tools from class, lame figures from posemaniacs. I'm going to try doing some of those every day and seeing what comes out of it. If nothing else, it's fun for me.
