this look great i don't have a lot to say, except for one thing, some of the faces seem quite long and some have too much space between the mouth and nose.
that's all i had to say in terms of criticism

I've always been a fan of the way you draw figures on paper, and once again you do not disappoint.
dam man that still life of the mug and wallet is nicee.
What can I say that's not already been said? You sir know your way around some art. Seeing your colossus there was an awesome treat, although I don't remember seeing it in the contest. All the more reason to appreciate it now. Thanks for giving me a reason to start looking at sketchbooks again.

scorge Hey wow, thanks for stopping by. That's a very generous compliment. I love your blog and your work, it's a pleasure to see you in here
Woooo ok lots of replies. So lately, like the past three weeks about, I've been working my butt off on some lord of the rings cards for fantasy flight games. The pay isn't that great, but they're a legit company and I'll finally have some published work, so the effort will be well worth it I think. I'm really happy with the way the illustrations turned out, but I'm super bummed I can't show you guys. Also starting on some character design work, which I think will be a nice break from all the illustration stuff I've been doing. I can't show those either haha.
I want to keep this sketchbook updated however, so I'll be posting some of the personal working I'm doing in my spare time. I'm trying to get some things done in the next week or two that I can send to Wotc. Would be awesome to get work for them. My end of summer goal, I think. Also want to submit some stuff for that ImagineFX rising stars competition.
So here's a portfolio piece I just started. I don't really like showing work at stages as early as this, butt whatever. Some of you might appreciate the beginning stages I suppose. I was trying two methods of working here. First one I did was starting with a drawing, which I don't reallly do, ever. The second one is the way I normally work, the way I feel more comfortable working, which is just blocking things in. Basically the same picture in both images, I just wanted to see which approach you guys think is working better. I've concluded that no matter which one I choose to continue with, they will probably look really similar in the end anyway, sooo...yeah. I'm gonna work on this today, probably have an update later.
Sorry for the long winded post haha, just felt like thinking out loud.

This one is looking to be cool man! If I could offer a critique, on the line drawing one, his right hand could use a bit more clarifying of the palm structure, right now it just feels like wrist and fingers, maybe add in the knuckels and a bit of the top plane? anyways, minor nitpickins. Either or could be a cool piece, I like the pose of the one on the left but the close crop of the one on the right is cool too.![]()
interesting, sophisticated and beautifully done work, i am your fan

Awesome updates man. I love the brushes you used on the head study previous page
I suppose its really whichever one you feel more comfortable doing, id say the right one, block in your shapes and go from there. thats also what i prefer to do myself. i m not sure why, maybe because it feels more like sculpting, ive always found that line work demands precision and having that pressure from needing to throw down the perfect line is something that doesnt really appeal to me. id rather shave and carve till i get that shape im lookin for.. but i guess you can still do all this with lines.. hehe.. ugh.. arts neat.
Also, from the sounds of it, you and i have the same summer goal. im hopin to have a couple pieces finished by the end of the summer for a WofC portfolio as well. anyways, your work is stellar to say the least, i dont think you'll have any trouble with reachin your goal dude.
cheers!

I'm really digging the rougher looking paintings you are putting up. They have a nice quality to them.

GEB Thanks man!
wreck Yeahhh I'm sticking with the comfort zone, going with the blocked in version. That's awesome to hear we've got similar goals, if you ever wanna chat or bounce some ideas back and forth, feel free to message me or something.
ArtZealot Thanks a lot man!
rumpenstiltzkin Thanks man! I agree
prsnsweeney Thanks bro!
Ok, for those curious I did continue with the rougher version. I'll post an updated on that a little later. For now, I just finished this step by step detailing a different process that I used on a few of my characters. I found it to be very quick and reliable for commissions and getting a similar feel within a set of characters. Hope it helps someone!

Love your process, really nice use of texture. And love the green striped shirt!
Holy crap man do you make your brushes or do you download them?
I could totally use some texturing for my own work, im not very adept at that yet
Awesome work man, I have one year to catch up with your work quality, its frightening XD
love the tutorial! though her toes seem a bit largish still its not the focal point of the image so i'm really just nit-picking

I love these peeps.
The tip for checking proportions is something I've never even thought about, so thanks for that.
Keep up the work man
Really awesome sketchbook! I like the tutorial you just added, it's nice to get a glimpse into the mind of the artist, especially such a good one![]()
Wonderful character work Jasper! Thanks for the tutorial too, as it has already been mentioned it's great to get a glimpse at the workings of a mind such as yours!
I will say one thing though, watch out for that reference, you're probably better off avoiding it unless you're really unsure about something as you can end up copying it too close in parts and letting an error elsewhere slip by due to a difference (here between the pose of your ref and the character). Note that both models in the reference images have high heels and your character is effectively barefoot, yet you've carried across the proportions from the models resulting in stretched shins on your character. Just be careful that the speed you're working on doesn't impact on the proportional accuracy.
Anyway, that's just me being fussy, you're doing great work Jasper! Looking forward to another inspirational update!!

Hey Jasper,
Incredible sketchbook you've got here. I really like the last process piece you put up. Hopefully I'll be able to work with PS like that someday.
As for your personal piece and whether or not you should be working from a line drawing or blocking it in like you usually do, I really think your personal pieces are the ones where you should push yourself the most. If your drawing isn't quite so strong as your rendering, it's pretty clear where you should be focusing more of your attention. Besides, stronger drawing skills could help you that much more when it comes to blocking things in; a better understanding of form is never a bad thing, especially with complicated structures like hands and feet. I hope you don't mind, but I did a draw over of your line drawing for a few things that stood out to me.
A sign that you're doing things right when drawing a gripping hand is that you can see a lot more of your character's fingernails/claws/whatever. With a closed fist, you're mostly just going to see the first two segments of the fingers.
Keep up the awesome work!
cool walkthrough, I'm wondering why you chose to make her face quite colored/darker skin while u made the hands and feet very clean and light. It feels like the face is losing its focal point because of the big difference in lightness. Which is a shame because it's a very pretty face ^__^
thanks for the walk through. even though the proportion in the sketch were off, the gesture had more energy and life.
nice walk through man! good luck on the portfolio piece, its looking very good. I like some of the subtle color shifts you achieved in the line drawing but i really like the style of blocking in shapes and colors. looking forward to seeing it finished!
keep ROCKIN' it bro!

ahem. pardon the interruption...
nice! love seeing the process! you seem to have worked out a very viable solution for character development. thats key, especially with work loads being tossed at you. one thing that always is awesome about your work is that you know just when to leave it finished. never overworked, but just enough focus and detail to keep us staring for a while. also, i love this piece. the hands and feet are awesome. love this sketchbook. sexiness galore.
