    Batman Samples - Update-01-03-2011

    Hi People,

Well, makes some time that I don't put some here images in the forum but it is because, I am making Environments for a cartoon in 3D and, this is taking all my time, but I always find a time to renew the portifolio.
This is the first page of sample of a sequence of 4 pages, where I will draw and to color.

I drew using lead 2B and, I colored using Painter 9.5.
Please let me know what you think.

I await answer and, as soon as I go finishing the pages, I am going putting here at the forum.

    Thanks,

    Take Care,

    Rod.

I ts funny with comics fully painted stuff tends too be accepted poorly, but of course theres acceptions Alex Ross, Jon J Muth, Dave Mckean, ect. I think the colors are too much I'd love to see the pencils inked then colored in flats. Totally my opinion and only from a comics perspective, From a conseptual art and illustration perspective its great especially the last panel.

i was gonna say something about panel 1, about the cityscape being too flat...but then i scrolled down and saw the painted version...and well...nevermind. Very nicely done.

The one thing that bothers me is the shared edge between p2 and p3. The buildings, because they're in perspective give this "V" shape. Panel 2 ends with the building almost matching the building in panel 3. Even though my mind knows better, my eyes sort of want to connect those to elements..even though they're in two different panels. Infact...with perspective lines drawn on the building (the windows, the ledges, etc.), when I read across the page, I almost don't even see two separate panels...just one. It's just a little confusing.

The pencils are 1000 times better than the colored version.
Comics are about storytelling. Pretty pictures and rendering are just gravy.
What ever happened to panels and gutters?

i like that the Joker was illuminated in the final panel, as if his sin was being brought to light, but this movement is almost lost because of how brightly lit he is in the preceding panel.
because they are 'in a dark alley', as they say, i would perhaps for more dramatic and noir-esque lighting. if anything, Batman was ever a darker comic
Look, you know what I mean. You take a bunch of people who don’t seem any different from you or me, but when you add them all together you get this sort of huge raving maniac with national borders and an anthem.

The final panel is the money shot. the skin texture gives grimy goosebumps, and the camera focus is a nice touch.

The knife is a tad confusing, is he giving her a haircut? is he pulling her hair? why is it not taught?

I agree with killborn. the panal previous is lackluster in its color, the jokers coat is plain "violet", it needs to be affected by its surrounding more, possibly more back lit. Also, the shading looks too greyscale, The brim of the hat is near pure black, and the highlight on the band white mixed with purple specifically, hold this picture back and makes it look fake.
    That said...
All in all, id buy this comic. The city is very well rendered and it overall is a very pleasing and professional spread. Good work.

p.s. the fat lady in the foreground made me laugh. possibly its because her face looks like she sees the victim in the other panel and is indifferent, possibly i think obesity is funny. i dunno. :p

Ef that noise, comics should be about pretty pictures. I have not, to date, bought a comic because john romita jr. did it. LAWL

But truth be told, you can't have a good story without a good storyteller

And while I very much think that the pencils are NOT 1000 times better, there are parts than didn't transfer well enough. The girl, for instance, looks amteurly drawn in the coloured, bad anatomy of her, and she is way too blurred on the last panel. But I am nitpicking, both the drawing and the coloured are real good.

At first I was not sure it worked..then the fantastic colour hits!! wow.
I like the focus effect on the last panel. However- Panel 3- That bag just would not fit between jokers crotch and the girls ass. you may have put it there to make it look less like a rape scene but it don't for me work plain and simple. Shame it really is coming on..can't wait to see more.

Gonna give a more strict crit here since your work is pretty good.

Page composition: Funky layout elements should be taken only when they enhance the storytelling; p2 tipping p1 doesn't do anything here since the eye naturally goes to that panel already, in fact, the top edge of the panel lines up with the shoreline, which weakens things further. P3 lies under p2 and p4 to no good effect -- you're cluttering up your gutters here when you already have very busy pages, which interferes with the storytelling. Very little of your gutter art will show up, especially where you're bleeds cut your margins to slivers of information. I understand the impulse to use the bleed to make the page seem bigger, but it doesn't help the actual pages. You may want to use some scrap paper and simulate the crop to really see what you're ending up with on that.

Storytelling: Pretty good. P1 is a pretty standard establishing shot of a city and it reads as night. You tilt p2 for no good reason since it isn't enough of a tilt to have a dramatic effect and there's nothing else in the page that takes advantage of it. It's a good street scene, but it reads as daytime -- which runs contrary to p1. The Batman is too small to read clearly when printed and the spire and other "thing" on the building are too close to him to isolate him and make him stand out in a night colour scheme (which you must know after colouring the page). There's no visual link between p2 and p3, but they're both in a city so it's almost forgiveable. Better you had the Joker pulling her into the alley in p2. You have some nice directive elements leading the eye to p4. P4 is not horrible, her head wouldn't be at that angle in that shot, but that's merely a quibble as the more accurate drawing would force you to pull out. The Batman shadow doesn't read well - -you've cropped too much of it to have it work as a storytelling device.

Drawing: The only real problems creep in panel 3: the anatomy on The Joker and his victim are a mess. His legs don't read as legs. His right upper arm in too short, his hat isn't sitting on his head (and there's a tangent with his eye and the brim). Her neck and shoulders are wrong and her abdomen is too long. The clothing is unconvincing -- I think John Watkiss just put out a book on drawing jackets and pants, that might be a wise investment for you. The line work on your graffiti needs some work, too.

Overall, your strength lies in the architectural stuff. Your anatomy needs work and you have to relax image density a bit when it comes to storytelling and layout. You might get hired by some fluke if your storytelling is bad, but no writer will ask to work with you if you can't tell their stories well.

The colour technique is, on its own, not too bad, but far too dark for comics and seems to lack atmospheric perspective, much beyond local colour and there are bright white highlights coming from all directions. The painted page has some nice effects going to make the page look interesting, but you're often stepping on top of some of the better parts of your drawing and hiding it.

Keep it up -- you show a great deal promise and talent, but you gotta hone those rough parts.

    ~Richard

I agree that the pencil work is better than the painted; You seem to have lost some definition with the colored version. Still, this is jaw dropping work; I'm looking forward to more, keep it up!

    Hello People,

Well, I will try to answer to all:

Wasker - Hey man thanks, is good to know that has people that would buy a comic book of Batman done by me, hehehe, thanks.

TheGnoll - Thanks man, and really I could have worked, a little more in the position of Jocker, I will take more care in the next pages.

Vigostar - Thanks man, Yeah man, I really like of putting many details in the sceneries to give more force for the page and to do with that the reader, pay attention to the details.

    Hazart - Thanks man!!!

Wrinkle - Yeah man, I also like of the traditional comics, with ink and simple colors, but I am noticing a change in the market and, I think more and more, because of the films and videogames, the readers will see comics as this sample page, it can be my madness, but I really think the comics market will change in the next years, with more detailed drawings and closer colors of the videogames and films.
Well, I wait to be working in the comics if that happens.

Jason Snair - You are right man, I should have at least, separate the pictures with a line white or red, to separate the panels well.
After I finish that sequence, I will go back in the page 01 to try to do some changes.

Elwell - Well, it is also good to know that you liked of the pencil, usually, when I make a page as this, painted, I leave much more simplest the pencil, and I leave the details and finishes, to do when I will paint.
But with certainty, in comic books , a beautiful drawing without a good StoryTelling, is notting.
I hope I have a little of the two.

Hookswords - Hey thanks man, these panels, are also my favorite ones.

Kilbourne - Yeah man, I understand what you want to say, I really thrilled myself in some shines, I think it is a little of the it influences of Gabriele Dell'Otto, I adore those white lights that he puts, but really I exaggerated a little in some scenes.
Well, I hope to control me more in the next pages... hehehe.

Kidnapper - Hey thanks for you to have liked some things and criticized other, really , this makes me to want to get right in the next pages.
I will really try to control me more in the lights in the next pages.
And of course, it is very good to know that you would buy a comic book like this.

JJ McKool - Hey man, I agree with you also, I think comics, has to have a good storytelling but also, a good image, a good designer, I think the combination of those two things that makes a comic book to be really good.
Well, I will take more care in the drawing of the anatomy in the next pages.

Spudstudios - Hey thanks man, really I put much more details when I make the colors of the page.
As soon as can I will look at your Sketchbook and to comment on also!!!

Bjorn - Yeah, really sometimes, I need to control me, because of the movies and videogames that I adore, I put many details in my pages, to be more interesting of being seen.

    Angrymikko - Hey thanks!!!

Rpace - Page Composition - Yes, you are right, it is really tempting to use the panels one over the other to do with that the space of the page is larger, but the sometimes that can disturb the narrative, I think with a more defined line of the outline of the panels and with the balloons indicating the reader where has to look before, it could solve the problem, but it is only my opinion.

StoryTelling - Did you really think in P02 , that this scene seems in the daytime? But I agree with you, the Batman in P02 should be more highlighted.
And as for P03, I tried to link in the other picture, almost using the same colors of the scenery of P02, and I also put to the bottom a Gothic tower, but anyway, is good to know your opinion on that.

Drawing - Well, it is good to know of those things that you saw in my drawing, thanks, I will try to get better in the next pages.

Well, with certainty, now that I received all those critics, I will study more and to always try to get better, for who knows one day, some editor of Marvel or Dc, hired me to do some work, hehehehe.

    Thanks to all,

And now an update, the page double 02 and 03, in the pencil.
I hope I have so many or more criticizes, positive or negative, as I had with this page 01.

    I await comments,

    Thanks,

    Take Care,

    Rod.

Your level of finish in the pencils is eye-catching, but the actual drawing underneath all the finish doesn't look professional yet... Your anatomy is bad all over the place and you need to study fabric and clothing folds and drapery. Especially in the 4th panel of that double-page spread - Joker's shirt looks like it's made out of gum or taffy or something. The pages are super detailed but they're not that convincing, things are too clean and unobserved to look realistic or really sell an urban mood (that's a nitpick though) - and where are the word balloons going to go? These look agonized over... you should NOT be spending more than a day on a page of pencils, because that's the speed you'll need to professionally produce comic art.

...Why does the Joker suddenly have glasses in the last two panels?

You obviously put a lot of time and effort into these, and they are really nice... Keep it up, you'll go far!

I'd say he's wearing glasses because the caption goes something like "you wouldn't hit a guy with glasses, would ya?" Most likely scenario.

Nice pencils dude, very clean. Anatomy needs some polishing but who here doesn't need improvement in that area. Post more!

Man...I can't believe I didn't comment in this...I thought I did. The Joker is a pure hardass and the batman you got in here is even more hardcore. Batman is my fave superhero, so you did him true justice. As soon as you complete this comic, let me know so I can go out and buy it.

    Hi People,

Remoraz - Thanks man, I also think with a good ink, it could be very cool.

Nonie - Heyyy, what´s up? With certainty I do need to study more anatomy and drawing of clothes, anyway, which designer that doesn't need more to study on anatomy, right?
And, I took only 1 day of work for page to pencil and, one and a half day in the colored page, I already work in the market the more than 10 years and, I know that in the American market, you have to produce a page a day of pencil.
And as for the Joker to appear using glasses suddenly, is it really how MrBobMarley said, did I want to pass the idea of that old joke of the JOKER - "you wouldn't hit a guy with glasses, would ya? " .
I only wandered in not putting a movement line in his hand, indicating that he moved the fast arm and it put the glasses.
In spite that I will do that in the color, for that, I didn't put this movement line in the pencil.
    Anyway, thanks for your criticize.

Mr BobMarley - Hey, you understood the joke!!!! HEHEHHE.
Tanks man, and with certainty I do need to improve the anatomy, us designers, do we have that always to be studying to develop, right?

Morpho - Hey Thanks man!!!Valeu mesmo cara !!!

Sarcophagus - Hey thanks!!! I hope you like the next page.

Stark - Hey Stark, thanks, Batman also, is one of my favorite characters, I dream in one day to make a comic book of him, I am sure that I could make a good work.
But these pages are not for any comic book of him, it is only a sequence of 5 pages that I am doing as sample, to show for some publisher of DC, let´s see if I have luck of some editor to give me a chance.

Well, I continue producing the pages of this sequence in my spare times, for that, I am delaying a little to put new pages, but here it is the page 4 of this sequence, I hope you like.

    And I await comments,

    Thanks to all,

    Rod.

Comics are about storytelling. Pretty pictures and rendering are just gravy.
What ever happened to panels and gutters?
Seconded. When showing your portfolio to an editor show which skill you're best at as that's what you'll get hired for. Ditch the painted version and page 2 and 3 as they're pretty weak in comparison to page 1. Page 2 should have a dramatic entry shot for batman to arrive on scene, get into it with the joker a bit and then you can cut to the cat woman page. That would make a solid 3 page sample right there. You HAVE to make sure that those pages are the best pages you can draw because 1 bad page could be the excuse they're looking for not to hire you and the 2 page spread is screwing up the good first impression page 1 had.
