Goremageddonīs sketchbook...NUDE Drawing.Letīs see how it goes.

    Hello to all.

My name is Hugo, Iīm 27 years old, Iīm from Portugal, but Iīm currently living in the Czech Republic, in Prague.

Iīve drawn since I know myself, but for some reason I always struggled to become better...When I was a teenager I was lazy so I would just copy other artists, and the fact that I never had art classes before didnīt really help. I would get home and not have a method or discipline to follow.
The fact that I work in a call center doesnīt really help moneywise, so I only started going to a weekly nude drawing class a few weeks ago. Meanwhile my company gave us Ipads, so Iīm trying to learn a bit of digital painting by myself. Bought a pen for the Ipad and Iīm trying my best.

I would really love if anyone would offer themselves to mentor me..I feel that I could probably have a chance in arts if I had someone to guide me through it.

My object is to one day paint with oils in the style of the classic painters, Raphael being my one true art hero. (I know Iīll never be a single bit as good as him, but I wanna work for it).

SO hereīs a couple of stuff Iīve been doing lately.

Please guide me and critic my work as much as possible if you can, because I would really like to become good.
I would show you some finished works first nd then start posting sketches, including sketches taken from the nude drawing class.

(Sorry in advance for the pictures they were taken with a friendīs phone.)

This was my first charcoal adventure ever..I was quite happy at the time (1 year ago) but now I see a lot of flaws

A month ago I bought a 1 euro set of watercolours and tried to find out how the medium works. Itīs quite cool, barely any room for mistakes...Painting over dried paint doesnīt work
    http://conceptart.org/forums/asset.p...7&d=1352403534

Lately Iīve been doing a ton of 30 second sketches when Iīm not on the phone at work...I believe this is called gesture drawing?

Today while receiving a complaint of a customer on the phone I did a 30 minute (thatīs how long the call took) study of a coffee cup. I think the angle of the body isnīt right though..

Hereīs a couple of sketches from my nude drawing classes. First class I wento to the model didnīt show up so we ended up drawing a sculpture of a skull from life. I attached a mechanical pencil to the image just to give you a comparison of the scale Iīm drawing at.
Most drawings are 20 minutes long, the skull is 60 minutes..

Hey Taha-023 thanks a lot for posting here. Kimbo was done with charcoal only. It was my first attempt. I was pretty happy at the time. The fish is my first try with watercolors took me about 2 weeks to finish - 1 to 2 hours a day everyday.
Feel free to criticize which ever drawings. I need to work a lot on anatomy.

Like what you're doing with that first batch of gestures, very clean
Second batch, try to draw more quickly! Get the gesture right and theeeen shade :0 Also, like what you'e doing with the guidelines, but keep it light untill you have it right Second drawing actually looks pretty good, but if you have time, work the face too xD

Keep doing those studies! More nude babes 8D
Also a note for the 60 second poses: Looks like you're using a lot of time going around in circles with your pen/pencil, try getting the shape in lightly with one or two lines (torso, head, etc) then use that extra time instead to define a few contour lines around it (the actual body parts like muscles and stuff)

    Much luck!

Thank you so much for your advice. I will definitely try to get better on the gesture drawing and I will try to do as you say and start getting contour lines. One of my biggest issues is mainly with the legs..I donīt know why but i always seem to draw them bigger than what they are in reality... And it always seems like they dont have the same flow as the rest of the body position.
But I wonīt quit and iwill keep on drawing a little bit everyday. by the way your SB is awesome

Thanks for the tips Raymond Luk. This is what I came up with for today. Reduced the 30 second poses to lines. Itīs much faster and it still conveys the motion.

"Lakai, can I ask a question? When you do those digital studies of movie frames, do you have the movie frame underneath and you just study the colours or do you do it from scratch while looking at the picture? Sorry for the noob question"
Im not sure if I really understand the question.

Here iss how i do them:
    1. copy paste the picture in ps
    2. estimate the proportion of the frame and make a mask on a different layer so i cant draw over the borders.
    3. sometimes i do a rough sketch before i start blocking in the colors.
    4. block in the basic colors and shapes.
    5. refine

You're definitely getting faster with those 30 second gestures, and liking that sketch of the girl
Pretty much, drawing from life is what a sketchbook is there for 8D Keep it up!

Hey man good to see you are putting in a lot of work.

I'm kind of in a similar boat, I've got a regular job to pay the bills and just trying to get better with my art skills. Although I do some freelance work here and there (not much though).

The first attempt at the charcoals is pretty good, I could tell straight away that it's Kimbo Slice, although he is pretty distinctive I guess

Hey Goremageddon! I read your post in the mentoring thread. I think Im by myself not qualified enough to give you a good mentoring but dont forget that reallity is the best mentor that you can get. When you do some anatomy studies for example and you are not satisfied with the result just try to understand your mistakes instead of getting frustrated and just putting it away. If you cant see it with bare eyes try to make a grid. This will maybe make you notice some proportional mistakes or some mistakes of the shapes that you can try to do better in the next. You do well to work with reference! It is a really essential thing, particulary at the beginning to have a continous improvement. I didnt do and I wasted a hell lot of time. So try to fight your frustration and try to understand your mistakes and how things work in reallity. Its really good by the way that you try to figure out the gestures and the body itself by using simple shapes. Thats in my opinion the best way. First you study the simple shapes and then by time when you get your proportions straight you get continously more refind. Here are two youtube channels that you could give a look at if you dont know them yet:
    http://www.youtube.com/user/Sycra
    http://www.youtube.com/user/prokotv
Good luck and keep it up!

Hey guys... Itīs been a long time... They blocked concept art in my office..so I have less time to come here... Meanwhile I started drawing everyday on my sktechbook and a few weeks ago I did my first oil painting ever. I must admit I am incredibly happy with it.
This is a copy of Sean Cheethamīs painting that I absolutely love.
