Eurgh, A - levels, where volume means more than ability!! Sorry - I was given a D at A-level, they then hung my painting up in the school halls becuase no one else in the course could paint or draw!!!!! The cheek!! a D!! I was the only student to contact working illustrators and pursue life drawing sessions which weren't provided at school!!! :p
Anyway, what you're doing here is good, if this is going for an assignment what you need is something really nice that stands out from the page or the examiner will ignore it all in favour of the dizzy girl who glues sweet (candy for the US crowd) wrappers into her sketchbooks and calls it collage for her final piece (honestly, I'm really bitter...).
I'd suggest doing a big detailed copy, even a painting, of the thumbnail you've cut out from the creation of adam. Or get hold of a life drawing book and copy down whole chapters. Don't be afraid to copy at this stage, you'll both learn more and have substantial work to your name! Good luck with it (he says tugging his collar...)
And don't let the bastards grind you dooowwn!!!![]()
its hard to descibe how exactly and perfectly you just described my exact thoughts about the teaching of art in schools and colleges.
and about doing a large scale copy.. what media would be best?, im competent with acrylics but have no clue about oils and i guess i can use water colours to an extent..
also thanks![]()

I'd use the medium your most comfortable with, but you want it to be bold, try and do a nicely rendered pencil sketch avoiding hairy lines etc, if you can do that it would stand out well in your books. Alternatively do one of the many tutorials in the fine arts section on this site, I can't think of one off hand but I'm sure there's many there.
As regards to teaching, I suppose it depends where you are. The structure of an A-level course is bad bad bad for art and design. The idea of an A-level is that all courses should be equal to each other, because of the Uni points system. This ofcourse is rubbish, everyone knows that chemistry is impossible and anyone can get an A in art by filling their sketchbooks and doing exactly what teachers says.
Anyway, because of this need for course equality the Art course is full of paper work which is ridiculous. Art colleges are different and you can get some quality teaching there. I went to Stafford College for my HND in Illustration & Graphic design - I was taught how to Oil paint, draw, design and enjoy artwork in a friendly productive environment - I went from a D in A-level to the years best student award in two years due entirely to the to the tutors there.
However, the tutor to which I owe every art technique I know is pushing 62 and will no doubt retire in a short while!!
Sorry, this has nothing to do with your sketchbook thread!!!
