Fiddzy: Thank you very much! I'm glad you like the altered face. Sometimes when I make drastic changes like that I am in two minds whether to keep it or not. I guess this one's a keeper

    bhanu:Thank you

shyamshriram:Mr. NRI Thanks for stopping by! Love your studies too, very inspirational!

    DANKA : Thanks a lot!

Kasei: Thank you! I hope you like the update

lilnebo:Hey girl! Yea that's how you spell my name. Can't get over Dave trying to pronounce it. Sh-ree-ya? Sh-ray-a? hehe. Thank you so much for the lovely comments!

Texahol: Thank you so much! Your work is fantastic!

    thirdeye: Thank you!

    oren90:Thank you very much!

    Loathsome: Heheh, thanks!

mike butkus: Thanks for coming back!

exodusparadigm: Thanks a lot! Still lifes are fun, must do more!

Here's a quick update before I head to bed. I changed quite a lot in this version, refined Alice a bit more and changed the mushroom drastically. I hope you like the direction it is headed in. As always, comments and crits are MOST appreciated.

The final version of Alice is the most full by its composition and meaning, that's amazing work.

ion one: Thank you! I do have some old walkthroughs : http://www.free3dtutorials.com/proje...op/tainted.php and http://www.free3dtutorials.com/art-t...g-of-qiane.php

Naram Sinha: Thank you! Lots of changes in the new version.

bhanu: Thanks!! I'll post details when the pic is done

Here's an update. I didn't really like how the caterpillar was sitting, it looked like a man in a caterpillar suit. So I changed it a bit to make it more creepy-crawly. The tail will be holding the hookah (currently a yellow blur).

It would prolly be fun if the caterpillar was leaning on his elbows with the mouthpiece in one hand while the other was on his chin while he languidly addresses Alice. Hope that makes sense.

I am so happy that you changed that baby face thing that was going on before. I knew you'd make it work. This new pose I like maybe less... Might be interesting by the time you're done with it, though... Looks like he's humping the fungus, which is maybe not what you intended. I really liked the moment in the previous pic (#423), where the sun highlights were blowing out so strong... Gave me the dual sense of scale that's inherent in this story. It still looks nice -- don't get me wrong -- but, it actually feels more like a guy in a caterpillar suit to me now than it did before.

You did say (somewhere) that you wanted crits/comments... that's the only reason why I'm giving voice to any of this. Otherwise, I have mountains of confidence in whatever you decide upon, not to mention that I feel awkward commenting on w.i.p's, in-general.

Sooo... you know. Oh, also, what happened to the backlighting of the mushroom? It's like you took these things that were so great, and maybe blamed them for other issues you were having. The form of the mushroom is all shot-to-hell... Actually, that's a serious flaw -- see what you've done? In the chaotic rush of your pose-switchery, you forced the back of the mushroom and the hidden portion of caterpillar into the same space. The top of the shroom is essentially disc-shaped, but your c'pillar doesn't bend around it properly. If you widen the image to accommodate a revised version of this pose, then the resulting S-shape of the caterpillar will probably be more interesting than this current, sortuv (ironically?) pillar, shape. Originally, though, he was an adorable lump. Seriously, it was so easy to picture his blobby little feet n tail slowly wriggling around, like somebody's bare toes, and you would just know that he was so damn high.

I do love his face, and how you've got his eye-stripes and that whole area... really tactile.

God... those claws look horrible to me, I don't think that's a good idea at all. And extending his body downward has really upset the balance of the composition -- he's really dominating the thing now, whereas before there was this interplay that bounced us back and forth between him and Alice.

    Holy cow, I'm sory.

You know. I just got invested, is all.

    Jasper_: Thank you very much!

Sharkcellar: Thanks! I thought about doing that first, but it would mirror Alice's pose too much I think? I want the caterpillar to be be agitated by the amount of questions she is asking. The poor guy just wants to smoke in peace

William b. Hand: Hahahaha, yes it does look like the caterpillar is humping the mushroom! Oh well, it was worth a try. I'm back to the previous version, hehehe. Thank you SO much!

mike butkus: Sir, you do! Thank you so much!

thirdeye: Thank you! I decided to go back to the previous version. As much as I loved the crawlyness, the humping was not what I intended and it was really taking away from the initial concept. I hope you still like it!

    zenichi: Thank you very much!

I started working on the arms and legs and pipe. The other end will be attached to the hookah of course

OK, what to say...I'm in a sketchbook daze. Your work is just thrilling to watch come together, so meticulous and well-worked. I have so much to learn here. Plus, you got me into the draw what everyone looks like threads-thanks for that, very awesome, and yours are among the best of entries. I love that WB Hand has taken such an interest in the last image, your work is right up that oh-so-glossy alley and I love that. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see how the caterpillar comes out.

That's really cool to see develop! I do hope you keep pushing it. Those forms are neat, really makes me wish I was there to touch it. It'd be a little gross, but still cool.

A few things I'd like to see on this last one:

    -Bigger image, if possible.

-Background a little bit more developed. Perhaps another layer or two of depth. Right now we've got the primary foreground attention-getting layer, and it looks a little pasted into a blurry background, and it makes the background look like a blurry painting as opposed to an actual world. Perhaps add another layer inbetween the current background, and the center of focus to give it a little bit more of that connectivity and depth.

-And...I thought I was going to say something else but I got nothing.

Thanks for the cool sketchbook, I needed something to do here at work.

    michaeljared: Thank you very much!

    oren90:Thanks! A little more time

Mykro: Thanks a lot for the kind words! I should do more doll-portraits, those were quick and fun.

Two Listen: Thanks! Here's a slightly bigger pic. I'll post closeups once I am done of course Need to work on the background, yep yep yep. I originally wanted it very out of focus with some bokeh, like a macro shot. I'm not so sure anymore.

    AsaB: Thanks a lot girl!

Here's an update on the stem and some other stuff. I am working on another painting too, I'll post those WIPs next time.

Gotta echo the lighting sentiments. Especially that brilliant blue light on the caterpillar's back. Awesome. I can tell the hookah isn't going to be a big focus of the image, but I'm looking forward to seeing something cool there when it's completed.

Jason Snair: Hahaha yea, cheap tricks. Rimlight is such a shortcut for attention, hehe. Thanks!

Locus: Thank you! Yea the hookah is going to be half hidden I guess.

    Sharkcellar: Thanks!!

Rushlord: Thank you! I found out about the contest very late Michael Kutsche is one of my gods!

thirdeye: Heheh thanks! I think I will now be known as the girl who drew the humping caterpillar, eek.

The portrait was just a test with using more textured brushes, speedpainting like. I always start out so crappy :/

Catterpillar piece is coming allong veeeeeeeery well, I agree with William on the pose, but you already went back to the one before, so it's all good.
I think you should try to use the same size hands/feet on the whole thing tho. I really like the tiny hands he has, great contrast vs his massive body, think they would do well as feet as well. Just a thought.

Wow, that caterpillar piece is coming along nicely, I agree with Teundeboer about the hands and feet though, the same size all the way down would be spiffy.
