Another walk cycle. Really rough with a wacom in photoshop. I kinda like working with graphite and paper more though. But it's certainly easier on a pc... I'm going to clean it up a bit more either tonight or tomorrow morning depending on university stuff. Itching to colour it.

Something for uni... A digital painting based on this style from Creaturebox.com.

The goal was to create a self-portrait in that style, and try to mask the digital photoshop creation of the image, trying to make the strokes appear like pencil / ink / watercolour / pastel /what have you.

Took around 14 hours non-stop... Still tweaking it I guess.

Animation update.

Edited the walk itself, carrying the swinging arm back more (thanks evan), think it looks way better that way... downside is I tried to clean up the lines, and they aren't really cleaned up at all... more like "ed edd n eddy" shaky lines, even so it feels like the "rough artifacts" from uncleaned animation has been lost... I like that kind of roughness... The colour helps, but was just quickly blocked in there to help give indicators to the arms, and foreground/background ligaments.

i was never able to get a walk cycle down, no matter how many bouncing ball animations i perfected, so its always fun to see someone who can do it right. you gonna do anything else with this guy?

Maybe, probably not this guy in particular but he was a good starting point. I had a lot of fun with the fat-bellied walk cycle a page or two back, and so might try something a bit more unconventional like that. Still it's good to practice the fundamentals.

Hey dude - funny, wacky, awesome stuff as usual in here!
Something is bugging me about the walk cycle though... I think it's the back foot/leg has very little movement in such an exaggerated cycle. Take a look at a quick lil walkcycle i did a few years ago.

Thanks for the vid an feedback, I can totally see what you mean. In the rough animation the flow of the legs looked nicer, but once I cleaned all this up it feels like the leg motion overall (both legs) is sort of clunky and rigid... like I watch the legs and can almost hear something going "clunk, clunk, clunk" snapping to each main pose.

The back leg doesn't seem to travel horizontally as much as the front leg, for sure, thanks for the heads up.

Will probably leave this animation as it is for now, worked enough on it and learned a lot, but it's all very much appreciated food for thought for the next round!

No problem Blighty - it's only a few small things really like you mentioned but also think about the way the body would bob up and down with the weight change (move up as he lifts leg / down just after foot hits ground) and the hips would twist just that little bit as each leg goes forward & back so the gun/holster would move a little with that.

I think it's a cool little animation though! Really enjoy checking out your sketchbook

Decided to bite the bullet and get goin' on Downtime Planet the animated series. Hoping to be able to accomplish 5-10 minute episodes then have them based online. Money making is optional, I'm just loving making things right now...

Here's a concept for episode 1... involving this lovely little fella'.

I say little... but really I'm trying to give him the feeling of being the size of a planet... if you have any tips on making him feel astromically huge without too much detail (gotta animate this guy after all) then that'd be awesome! Thanks.

"Seur Bastion? Why that name?" Well, he's big, so "bastion" fits, and if you add Seur to the front of it, it sounds like Sebastian.

What software and/or process are you planning to use for your animated series? I work for a website where we do most of our animation using Flash "puppets" (breaking static drawings into sections which can be moved independently to mimic hand-drawn 2D animation), which has proven surprisingly versatile if used properly. Depending on what shots you are planning, it might be a good technique to try for something like a huge, planet-sized alien monster, since you could make just a few highly detailed drawings of the alien, with crater marks, fissures, or other details to imply size, and then use those drawings for all of your animation.

Just a thought. I'll be curious to follow your progress.

FEEDBACK: Would really love some colour scheme feedback for this character:

This character is a mechanic, that usually finds himself in dangerous scenarios, and during said scenarios others think that he never quite gets the "gravity" of the situation, because he still jokes around and seems oblivious to hazards.

In actuality, he can hold his own and his aware of his surroundings, he just has a very positive, playful disposition. It's a strange character personality but I've been coming up with ways to make it work in animation... and just wanted to use this more "serious attitude" sketch to colourise a scheme for him...

I'm really not sure what colours to settle on for his skin, clothing etc, or if the values could use work and such. Any feedback would be brilliant, thank you.

For 2D cell animation so detail won't be as much as this, but this is to give me a 3D understanding of the subject.

I've been drawing quite a bit but not really uploading or scanning. But just touching base to say I've got my site designed and online, had to change the alias a bit though And now that I've gone from "Pixel Crayon" to "Cubic Crayon", close friends keep egging on that it's actually "Pubic Crayon".
