You don't use it you lose it, gonna try to get it back.

I've had this sketchbook for awhile. I'm not the most dedicated person trying to be a pro illustrator or artist. Just someone who considers art a big hobby. I figure I'll slowly fill the pages of this thread and I'll improve over time. Cheers.

Leaving the original text from when I started years ago. Not an art or design major anymore just learning for fun.

I just realized I've given no background on me or my sketchbook

I'm 19, a Graphic Design student and I love to draw
I dont have a tablet so I havent gotten into serious digi art and such
Mostly pencils and some charcoal or other random materials
This is my first sketchbook I've made on CA.org
I feel I've already improved a lot since I started it not too long ago]
I update when I can, but this thing called "life" gets in my way occasionally

    ================================================== =========

Ok first one, this is my first image using "Gimpshop"
(I dont even have photoshop, need to save up for it and other programs)

Project for my 2-D design class
I didnt have a ruler so I didnt make all the perspective the same
So some buildings may look like they tilt and such but I like it still

This started as a sketch I did when at Lunch
I just experimented and it became what it is

    Another 2-D design project
tried to make the image get smaller into the horizon

Ok and to at least do SOMETHING productive
    Here's a quick hand study I did

That concludes my set of random images that have nothing to do with studies

My next posts will be some studies and something that will actually help build my sketchbook and give people something to actually help me with

But finals are next week so it'll probably be after that during my break

Gaah kinda hesitant to push submit haha

    hey,
i just introduced my sketchobook not too long ago aswell but its nice to see even newer ones lol.
u have a unique style there.
    - seeing ur hands, ur still gonna need more practise on those.
    - i like ur first pic though, but u shoulda coloured in the character in photoshop or something.
    - some anatomy, face practise goes a long way (as i found for my profile pics)

but keep it up and post some more!
Check out my SKETCHBOOK ...looking for helpful advice!

hey welcome and this place is a real good place to get better, you can see it in some of the threads that span over a long time, its pretty crazy
anyways i agree with gkrit, just a knowledge of form and proportions can help you a lot, i would say just keep on drawing and drawing...practice!
    keep on updating too!

Finally got ahold of some Loomis to study
And just reading it I learned alot I didnt know

Although finals are all next week
I'm going to try to draw at least once in awhile when I can

    My first quick hand study
Compared to my hand up above where I was just going off what I see
I can tell alot of what I was doing wrong

Great work on the hand studies. There's already a remarkable improvement there...just shows that practicing things simply works...

I like the image with the tree in the background, but i think that swirling vortex thing in the background is too distracting...the styles dont fit there.

Promising start tho, keep at it and practice those basics more....I should too...

zeroe - Thanks alot after doing all these studies I realize how I viewed the human body so simplisticly and had everything all wrong

I was about to do something different from studies for once
but the moment I started to draw a figure I just couldnt continue because it felt I was doing it all wrong now haha

So I'm kinda doing studies everywhere right now, hands, head, body etc....

zeroe - Oh yeah almost forgot also that drawing with the tree
I filled in the background because I had to use some random drawing techniques for the project, the drawing was one of about 6

So I tried taking out the vortex on my computerr

Finished my first final of the week, wasnt too bad

    Here's a quick self portrait I tried
I havent done any studies on the face yet so I know its not perfect but I tried

And the lighting on my reference sucked alot... so I couldnt get very defined areas of light and dark if you know what I mean, but I tried to give it at least some sort of shading

im happy to see ur hands have gotten better... see ... it does pay off (dunno how many times ive said that b4...).
but about ur self portrait, imo, dont think u have to rely on wat ur reference looks like, makes some artistic decisions as in, complementing darker areas even more or creating a light source thats even stronger than in ur reference. thats if ur unhappy with the light source anyway.
hope this all makes sense. try it if u want.
other than that good job with all ur work.

Thanks, after being away from my drawing for awhile and looking back at it
I notice that the eyes are a little too close together....

Eh whatever I'm not going to fix it. I'll just draw something else later haha

i see that ur blaming a lot on your references... id say draw from life rather than pictures. that way you cant say "my reference sucked"
right now its seems like ur using reference as a crutch and when you cant copy the reference you blame the reference.
    set up still life scenes
have a friend sit for you.
    draw stuff. a lot.
everyone can get better. there isnt a person on this earth that was born able to render a perfect picture without practicing. great anatomy studies though. keep doing that! the more you know the better

Wow I've been REALLY lazy since the semester ended

This is one of the sketches that came out as more than a scribble
Havent really done much drawing on my break yet

I'm focused right now on making sure I at least have a general sense of anatomy for the arms, torso and up

Legs I'm not focused on ... YET

Theres some flaws in this sketch but hey I'm workin on it
I'm trying to actually use what I've seen in studies in my actual drawings

I think its helping..... hopefully lol

(This is kinda like a newer version of my last post)

Well its a guy by a fire, left arms in a sling
Tried to shade really dark so I can put some contrast in here
My scanner sucks so its hard to pick it up unless I REALLY draw it

I still need to do studies on the body waste down
But I just cant push myself to do studies
I look at them but I havent "drawn" them yet

Oh yeah and I know he's pretty much burning his feet and such
I drew the fire before the feet and left leg (big mistake)

    YES

    I agree completely
I need to draw ALOT more

Its a combination of me not wanting to do studies right now
And the fact that because I havent done the studies my drawings feel like I'm doing them wrong so I stop almost before I start

I guess one of these days I need to suck it up and just get it over with

All that matters is that you get something out of it when you do studies. I think I've done lots of studies and forgotten what I drew because I wasn't putting it all together in my head. Think, then draw.

Okay now, good start on your sketchbook. Your inital posts showed a lot of good graphic design thoughts with a mix of mediums that work in the field. I'd like to see some more monochromatic colors and ink illustrations. Pick a topic and let your mind go on it. Thumbnail something out if you gotta first.

I'm desperately trying to finish my graphic design degree so I can move on to illustration You gotta have the capacity to push the envelope if you want to make it big time.

Some Loomis feet from his Figure Drawing book on http://www.fineart.sk

Does anyone know a site that is good for studying the anatomy of legs and feet, Loomis didnt really get into it that much

Legs/Feet are the part of drawing figures that I feel I'm the weakest at
So I want to try and get better at that

oh my god i HATE that feeling! i get it all the time!

here's what i've found though: just draw what you want anyway. you'll feel like "why is this so bad looking " but you don't want to let studies stifle your creativity (which i've felt happen to me), it's important to keep on making your own work.

like everyone's been saying, keep drawing, and have patience. you will improve if you keep going at it steadily

grenappels - I'm glad someone understands haha, I've started to FINALLY just draw whatever comes to mind, no matter how random haha

Ok I felt I needed to do another self portrait
To me my other ones almost an eye sore because I feel I couldve done better

This one... I think for the first time ..... actually looks like me

Trying to sketch at least something everyday (at least when I can)
This one was going to be more random doodling but for some reason this picture popped into my head

I know theres a lil awkward anatomy in the guy but I thought it was funny anyways

Oh yeah and this is funny just because I saw a neighbor do this once (He wasnt quite THAT harsh but ya know)

Busy day picking out some classes I need
But these are my sketches for the day

First one I just randomly did
His right leg bugs me a bit, I'm not sure what it is though
(But I drew it too dark so if I try to erase it, it'll leave marks)

I might consider it a WIP I'm not sure yet

Then I have an arms study from Bridgeman because I felt I needed to do one

    And then just another sketch

These are more what I'd call doodles
I wasnt really even trying for these
It was kinda like my mind was blank and I just wanted to put something on paper

So I drew a baby, a bridge/alleyway I saw, and a weird guy I just titled Mad Hatter cuz it seemed to fit

Hopefully next update I can put a little more effort than this

BUT I AM finally taking a drawing class this upcoming semester
    Which I'm pretty psyched for

    Some random sketches from boredom

And for some reason I just started drawing this character which is now a WIP, I like it so far, I just hope I dont mess it up haha
After scanning it I notice a few small things I need to fix but eh I'm at least drawing again

And since I'm starting my drawing class in less than a week
I'll be doing plenty of drawing then I guess

More randomness, didnt spend much time on them
Just more of putting something on paper

Starting my first Drawing Class Thursday
So I'll at least be drawing from life for once
I know I havent done any of that recently

Amazing improvement in such a short time. Keep up the studies, try to put more confidence into your line.
I think some studies of how light affects forms would help you, perhaps look up some photograph refrences of some scenes with really dramatic lighting.
    keep it up!

I'm trying to make sure I work on studies, alot to remember though
And yes I need to work on light sources and lighting alot

I'll get it all down eventually hopefully

I didnt realized this until I drew him but
Bill Cosby has a CRAZY face!!
He was almost annoying to draw haha

His left eyes all weird compared to his right and his left eyebrow is almost nonexistant, also he has the biggest cheeks I've ever seen haha

Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook.

You've got some cool stuff here. I like the feeling of the first pic.

and since it's something I know I'd like to hear, I recognized Bill Cosby from your drawing before I read it was him.

oh- great improvement shown here... I hope I'll see that kind of improvement too.
Please take a look at my sketchbook

I'm just a beginner, but I'm trying desperately to get better.
