    Thumbs up Eminkey's Sketches

Hi, I'm a high school senior, confused about what I want to do with my art/life. Here are my sketches, up for critique.

Mostly life drawings, some drapery/pants studies, goofy cartoon faces, some from photos and videos, skulls from still life, a big red self-portrait, and some imaginary faces inspired by a TV show.

Thanks for everything you've got. Keep it constructive, I says!

I think that you should definitely pursue art.
The obvious options would be to follow the educational path of animation or illustration but you could also branch into fine arts, art history, etc.

Your drawings show definite potential, especially your face and drapery studies.
    A few questions:

    i) How much time do you devote to drawing faces?
ii) Is the last picture inspired by Tegan and Sara?

Well the only thing I can tell you is your art is great. I would have to agree with the post above.

Well, I guess I can't deny it any longer, I'm a forum kid, born and raised on the Internet, hahahah. So I'll post here more often. Maybe. Maybe not.

    Here's two new WIPS on 11 x 17 paper (love the stuff, it's like a mini-mural):

Everything is wonky and out of place in the first one, but that will all come together with practice. I draw from life, from masters, and from references when I need to study. Sometimes from memory.
I think my most developed skill is my clean pencil-work, but that could use more practice too.

Second one-- I felt like letting go of subject matter for a minute and doing some stupid, random heavy metal designs. I think the beefy elbows are repetitious, so I should probably get a look at them from all angles and shapes. I'm really inspired by James Jean, so I often get noodley in my doodles, but they lose structure. Again, practice will keep it all together.

Contemporary-- My three weakpoints: faces, anatomy, and drapery. So I'm studying each more now. Sometimes I divvy up an hour to all three. Tegan and Sara, hahah, yeah, I copied that screen from the video for "Back In Your Head", they're adorable. Made a little skull study of it afterwards.
    M. Nelson-- Heheh, thanks. Sometimes it's too easy get compliments here. But they're just as valuable as critiques, I think. Oh lawd.

    Thanks Glory, you're teh best.Hahah

I realized today that I only do about 2 sketchbook pages per day, when I used to do 10.
Here's a sketch from today. I like the super-tall fashion models in Vogue, so I tried to imitate their bodies (shoulda used high-heels, heh):

Hey all. Here's a long 3 hour sketch from life drawing class. Just had my last fall class on Saturday, but I'll be signing up again for spring.

Your more comic-like works are amazing, they've got such life and fluidity in them. Great stuff

Your realism isn't as consistent, but you still have some very nice pictures. I like this one a lot, and some other sketches are definitely well on their way.

Keep up the pencil, I'll definitely revisit!

    Thanks, guys.

So, I'm learning to draw, reading, challenging myself, and learning to balance work and play. And watching CNN. Fantastic.

Here's a simple, fugly face, just a quick bump:

your style is very nice and its always nice to see some substance behind your stylization.
have you tried the faber-castel brush pens?
    theyre nice (cheap too!)
hope that you have made the decision to continue with your art after school.

id suggest going to any of the bigger art schools with a commercial art/animation program. GET INTERNSHIPS AS SOON AS YOU CAN! real world experience counts for more than any degree.
    good luck

Thanks everyone. Yeahj, those actually are Faber Castell. Here are the latest doodles and sketches. The faces are from Myspace, Purevolume, and The Cobra Snake. I added the the Rob Liefeld drawings for comparison because some of my faces started to look like his.
Eager for any and all C&C!

Just another bump this time. More face practice, plus full bodies. I felt like I needed to practice those too. I'm usually just drawing faces, limbs, cartoon doodles and body parts.

'Nother little bump here. This time, I'm mostly using faces from Something Awful and Myspace. I'm still using Photoshop's grid to copy these faces, but I need to break that habit.

    oi nice portrait studies

yeah grid is kinda bad i guess, at your level you should eye it or use your pencil/stylus to measure

Thanks for the tip. The grid does help me focus on details though, even if it is cheap.

Here's a big one, no grid, plus more minis, some with the grid, some not:

The grid drawings are getting better and better, so I don't think it's a bad habit doing them.

The first picture of the december 27th post is just wonderful! Do more of that kind. :^)
