Goddamn, Coro, your portraits just blow me away. Great watching you paint in Dallas, and can't wait for that tutorial. The fact that I live in your city and can't watch more of your painting in person is aggravating .

Love the comic by the way. This is intriguing to say the least.

    Cheers.

Very cool. I especially like the more expressionistic heads. The top one reminds me of Francis Bacon (specifically with the "x-ray" like view to the mandible) and the bottom one Goya. The bottom one especially has a stark forcefulness that I really like.
"Contrary to the belief of the layman, the essential of art is not to imitate nature, but under the guise of imitation to stir up excitement with pure plastic elements: measurements, directions, ornaments, lights, values, colors, substances, divided and organized according to the injunctions of natural laws. While so occupied, the artist never ceases to be subservient to nature, but instead of imitating the incidents in a paltry way, he imitates the laws."-Andre Lhote

    thanks for the comments guys.

i feel like i've neglected my SB for way too long...it suxors, i just been so busy with work and the comic and shit; its alot to keep up with. so i figured i'd take the oportunity to dig around the old hard drive today and post some work stuff in here. i haven't really shown much of my commercial work for the past few years...im a little lazy when it comes to digging it out of my HD once its been released, plus, id prefer people to know me more for my personal stuff. those are my ideas, and i can stand behind the decisions more easily.
sometimes commercial work can be more a test of technical skill than artistic license. but sometimes we get lucky. so i found a few examples of jobs like that, where the direction was cool and we clicked and i kind of got to do my thing. there are always things i would change looking back on these, but they got the job done and at the time it was the best i could do in the situation.

so this first one was for deadly creatures, a game made by rainbow studios for the wii i believe. i grew up in the soughwest playing in the desert so this was a joy to work on for the subject matter. i wanted to bring a fantastical element to an ordinary place. they were really cool to work with.

the next pic was a commercial pitch that these folks, i cant remember the name, called us with this last year. they already had some rough pre vis done, and they just needed us to do these little mocks of three different x-box games happening inside a little stage in the back of their heads. we all thought it was the craziest idea ever, but we did the sketches, and they had me flesh this one out. all in all i spent about a day and a half on it. for this job i opted to take photos and 3d assets, and comp them together with a little paint and whatnot, because they wanted something representative of a live action shot. if you can guess who's head that is, or who the funny uncle/nephew duo on the couch is, you get a gold star . anyway, we thought this was the craziest idea ever, and never thought anything would come of it, until like 2 months later when that whole x box live campaign aired, with this idea imlemented. not exactly of course..but was cool to see.

the next two sets of boards were a pitch for an EA marketing campaign. we've done a bunch of stuff for our friends over there at EA, but AO2 was one of the first jobs they came to us with. i used photos, paint, and 3d to mock these up very quickly. they liked them, i had fun making them. it was the start of a great relationship.

the sketch page is of some zombies i did for flagship studios, probably almost 5 years ago now..i still like them for some reason. im sorry if i showed these before, im not sure if i have..i was hoping theyd pick the one with the zombie baby popping out, but they opted for a more conventional version for the final.

now to leave off on some personal work heres a step by step of an illo i did earler this year. the idea behind these two is that they hate each other, but are chained together, through some sort of interdimensional chain. maybe its just a hallucination they both share...the monster talks non stop, and smokes tons of cigarettes, while the guy just wants to be left alone and live under the freeway by himself. so it kind of plays on that escaped convict idea, as i always thought that dynamic was funny.

so there we go. hope you guys get a kick out of some of the work

    hugs,
    c36
