Mentees' Conspicuous Corner aka Student Lounge, whichever is stickied

So it's 6:40AM, and I've been up all night. Why?

    Because I'm PUMPED! pld:

I'm learning things, and it's exciting! I've spent several hours in deep thought just thinking about colors and lighting, values etc. I had an 'aha' moment, when I became aware of the relativity/subjectivity of color. Yeah, people have mentioned it before, but it really sinks in after you've spent 2 hours analyzing a landscape piece labeling the water as "blue", and it's actually a grey/desaturated color instead.

It's awesome when you realize you've only scratched the surface of art knowledge.

    So...

What have you been learning about, that you'd like to share? Any 'aha' moments?

    What i have learned,
is that trying to draw from a different approach is a really good thing to do.
The first assignment i had was 'draw what you see' and this really helped me people have told me to 'draw what i see' many many times, but only after the first assignment i understood what it actually is.

It gives me a better approach to the details of the subject that i draw.
I even noticed it at school, when i had to draw an animal and i was really looking up to it because i thought it would suck hard, however my drawing turned out to be one of the best of the class and that's all thanks to my mentor arttorney .

I cant wait to see my drawings in a few years, it should be improved so much that i really laugh at my drawings from this year!

So far the thing that has stuck in my mind the most... Don't place the focal point in the center of the image. One of those things I knew but never paid attention to until someone started calling me on it.

its 3:07 at my place right now. so I believe my mentor went to sleep.
but I"m soooo exited. a real live artist is going to tutor me.
    sooo happy.

so far my only "aha" momment was the understanding that there are real people here. its hard to explain. I've never pm'd anybody in a forum before. Its almost as if there was a CA social network here.

You know, this sort of feedback can really help those of us on the mentoring end to become better mentors. Thanks! And keep the posts coming!

We really gotta keep the kid out of the pot jar...

One thing I'm starting to notice, even this early, is that we're not going to be able to keep everybody happy every time, but they'll come back if we do something they "like." I think it's inevitable, especially with younger students, but it can make the people at this end feel like we're letting people down. Don't worry about it. All we can hope for is that something--even an inane aside reference--will stick in their brain somewhere and come back to haunt them just when they need it...and that means we're doing our jobs, I guess...

I'm having a bit of a problem. Well, two actually.

Firstly I'm desperate for mentoring but feel guilty about seeking it as I am no where near confident, skilled or experienced anough to offer mentoring assistance. Is anybody else like this or even think I should seek mentoring regardless?

Secondly am I right in looking for a mentor that have skills I need assistance in as well as the similar style I have/work towards?

in your search for the right fit in mentors. I would ask that you keep an open mind as to what you need. needless to say marko is not going to mentor you. but Im sure there is someone out there that can help you get better. YOu need to be openminded about what you need though.
I mean .. And this is gonna sound rude... If your looking for a mentor in drawing anime furries in "your" style, you have come to the wrong place. But if you are looking for help improving you drawing abilites and helping your motivation.. we can help. start by looking through the sign up thread. to see if you can find a hopeful match. PM them
while you are waiting, join the classroom for all... and participate in some classes there.
Ilaekae and Seedling are never mean... and always helpful
    good luck
    and GO DRAW!

About that first question, as far as I know there is no quid pro quo rule. What I mean is that you can be a mentee without being a mentor.

Admittedly, building up local brownie points by mentoring might help you later to get a mentee position with one of the gods. (No guarantees though, and I wouldn't hold my breath on it.) If you want to be a mentee without mentoring, then just figure out who you think can help you and shoot them a PM. The worst thing that can happen is they say no. So what! Try somebody else then. There are hundreds of artists on here who have at least something on the ball. Browse the sketchbooks.

Where did you get anime furries from?! lol! Or was that for arguement's sake?

Well thanks for the advice CRX and Arttourney, I'll be sure to take all the points in. I will give the 'classrooms for all' topics a look later. I believe the current one is imagination with perspective - interesting

    Thanks again

that was for arguements sake.. and a touch of humorous exaggeration. But you get the point.

Marko Djurdovic is one of CA's King lions. and I probably spelled it wrong.

    hope to see you around

Ok, so here is the question--how do I get a mentor? I have been checking this branch of the forum for like 2 years and can't figure out how to get into a class on anatomy, or find a mentor in the subject.

Wow, bro... You make me feel better, thought i was the only with this problem...

I'm delighted by CA... Everything helped A LOT, in really short time... Thanks for all the big ones and students share all this knowledge! At least for me, i felt snug in such place, with so many incredible people and ideas...

I still looking for mentor too... I'm self taught, but feel insecure with my art (tradional and digital), and at the same time, i know i can get better and better, all i need is someone giving some help. Any advice to get some mentoring?

Thanks a lot, for all guys in CA... Cheers from Brazil! =D

I was going to post this in the Mentoring thread, and then realized I talked a lot more about being menteed.

My biggest aha moment was after a year of studying a skull, finding the landmarks in a facial drawing I did.

I've unofficially mentored many friends. My relationship with mentorship dates back to my first year of 'serious' drawing, when I as a starry eyed and awestruck twelve year old and met a fifteen year old who had all the same interests as me but with more experience. I followed her lead for several years in more than just my art. But a year or two after I moved in with her as an adult we began to grow apart as she began to more heavily stylize and simplify her work, losing the basis in reality and becoming that kind of weak hybrid of western and anime style that so many kids draw these days. She probably still has more skill/talent/patience than me, but I'm pretty she taught me everything she could about illustration.

Since then, I've inadvertently picked up a few mentees but inevitably felt that they surpassed me by finding their own styles.

I feel I have the beginnings of a style budding, but I'm hesitant to break down too quickly and give up some of the hard earned study I've applied to learning construction. My current focus is in adding depth and expression to my illustration, but I've hit a wall at how I'm supposed to do this.
