holy shit you've done a hell of a lot since i last checked your sketchbook. haha thanks for making me feel like a slacker. I really dig your AP portfolio. A lot of interesting stuff, some really strong pieces in there.

What I notice a lot in this page is how frustrated you are with your digital still lives. Your traditional still life paintings are really strong and show your sensitivity to color and light. Maybe you should think about what made the trad ones strong and the digital ones not so strong. I have a feeling it's a really simple, fixable problem like you putting too much thought into your digital ones and not getting that flow going, or that you have a limited palette to work with when you're using trad paints. Whatever it is, find out and fix it! You're totally capable of a great looking still life, as we can see in your ap folio and around your sketchbook. Just tap into that skill when you open photoshop.

P.S. What kind of sketchbook did you use in the last post? ..Or are those the rings of a MASSIVE 18x24 pad? D:

Bapsi Thanks Bapsi thats some great advice right their, i agree its totally fixable so i beter get fixing. thats some of the fun with photoshop and some of the problem its kind of so overwhelming that you have to find that right flow you get with traditional to really get your bearings ...if that makes sense.

Pijus normally i would unconditionally accept your challenge for an update battle..buutttt ill be starting a summer job so let me figure out how much time i need to put in their before we start anything epic but i promise by this Sunday well start going at it.

Nice bridgemen studies, I like how you experiment with pencil and inks to mix things up a bit with them.

For the textures on the environ. There's a dirty little secret you can scan in real paint strokes and overlay them over the digital painting. Try to focus on getting the values first then think of color and time of day. Example if sunny outside and the lighting is yellow then in the shadows there would a hint of blue and purple.

Try not to use colors straight out of the tube, it mighttake away from your hard work unless you want o more impressionistic kind of look.

Hey Gabe( I really hope Im not mistaken about your real name). Big update dood, very good. I can say ur bridgman studies looks pretty good. Your pencil lines gone awesome man. Keep up working.

    Now with the eye thing.
Its understandable that you havent noticed your eyes proportions, becouse the smallest fault of proportion measurement makes big differences. You will improve that by practice and it will become natural to make it right in the future. I think the most importantly you need to pay attention that the gap between the eyes is one eye lenght Here Ill try to show you your mistakes, and in the right I tryed to fix things up a bit
    Picture1
    Picture2
Though in the Picture2 the mistake is less recognisable i still wanted to make more examples for you.

    I truly hope I helped

    Sorry for my pour language.

    Take care

I never understood about the twist and turns of the torso well until I studied bridgemen. I think you got it!

That's great you are experimenting with skin tones. Even if the skin tones happen to be different from your own skin value while you paint. You can always take mental notes on those color combinations for other projects.

Wow, there is some dramatic improvement in this thread.

These last portraits look ok, although it seems (correct me if I'm wrong) like you start them on one area and work from there... you could get better proportions if you got the shape of the head, the perspective and the place of the features down first.

    Your portfolio looks awesome =)

Amanda C Thanks Amanda thats really helpful i feel like sometimes i can get the features down but over all the shape of the head still confusedness me Ill try working painting the head all at once instead of focusing on one area and working out

    JailHouseRock2Thanks

Pigeonkill Thank u Pigeon although im getting good color sense from doing these portraits i still don't think its helping the cionstruction process so perhaps ill have to look else where to figure that out.

Finaly an update, awesome sketch book pages and anatomy studies, keep up with loomis, it helps alot, I know it helped me. Maybe try shading those heads after linework (even if its not shaded in loomis drawings) it will help you understand and memorize planes better. Well it helps me. Keep up. Ill be waiting for another update.

Dude, I really like where your life drawing is going. The angular style merging with a loose softer style is really nice. Reminds me a little of the old masters. It's cool to see how far you've come by going through your sketchbook. Keep it up and thanks for swinging by mine! I like how this one is going. I wouldn't mind a nice castle on top of the hill along with people. The small stair like structures at the base caught my eye a bit.

That's a sweet looking engine and yummy reference material.

It took me a while to get into Loomis too. What got me even more interested in his work is when I read that Loomis was told to go home from art school because they felt he wasn't good enough. He turned around and worked hard not only to prove to he could do it, but share his knowledge to improve the industry.

Pijus ill get right on that Loomis study in chocolate, and i also got Whits downloads on environments i was a little disappointed to see that non of em were that concepty but their still really cool and valuable to learn from. im really not enjoying my enviroments..or really much of any of my digital work soo far its all so far from being what i want it il tryto explain more in my next post.

Hookswords thanks its getting better but i still have lots to learn. i loved all those photos i think its completly amazing i also saw a you tube video that was doe in the same style it was worth a look at if i see it all drop t in ur book.

Pigeonlol id work on that more but it was just a small study and it served its purpose i think those are rice pattys btw. and thanks iv also read that about Loomis im not saying hes not god or anything but it seems like his stuff dosnt have much expression or anything dynamic going on with it but still ill pick it back up

Heres a painting i started on. mainly set up the composition.blocked in the color and i started going back and putting all the buildings back in 3d AND sent them into photoshop because my line work wasn't adequate ..ummm iv got along way to go and i need to figurer out this female figure and get the skin tone right.

those studies look nice, great that you did reflection practice on the last one, was fun to paint that one for me too. now make some landscapes from imagination to apply what you learned and dont spend too much time in sketchup, keep your pencil and other stuff skills sharp too

Just joking. I actually I need to do some Andrew Loomis Studies tonight >.>

It would be neat if you finished the Environment challenge, the tree one is my favorite.

jatherip Most defiantly, its a huge problem I'm having, and i think once i get it i could really move a step forward with my portrait work. thanks

Pijus Thanks mate, yeah were getting busy hopefully everything is going good with you. well talk soon give me a time when u think you'll be free so we can catch up.

Well art school really sucks so far if had to deal with, robbery's, shootings, harassment, and probably anything else you can think of, why cant people just focus on their art instead of hatred. Despite all the crap Iv got a few god professors and their really diving in to the basics of art so hopefully that works out.

Paintings One in the process, the landscape was for master piece in a day and i think i did really well for working 3-4 hours plain air. for kind of the first time with Acrylic..
Remember Painting in the direct sunlight in 90 degree weather will bake the acrylic on to your pallet super fast.
