I picked up an M3 Simply (same hardware as R4, just different firmware) at realhotstuff.com, looks like they have the R4 in stock now. Quick shipping, took about 3 days. I've also heard good things about nxpgame.com.
btw, I'm new here, I'd actually read about Colors! in this thread and was encouraged enough about it to buy a DS Lite specifically to draw. I've had it for about a week now, and it's been really great![]()

I can't seem to load any of wesburt's files for playback because the .tmb file isn't there. Is there i a way to load them without the tmb? Or would you be willing to post them Wes?Thanks.
EDIT: nevermind i figured it out, i just made a temporary file in order to open it then saved over it after playback to get the thumbnail/tmb.
Awesome stuff guys keep it up.

Playback doesn't need the tmb file, just the drw. The tmb is the thumbnail file so that it shows up in the Colors browser, the drw is the one with the brushstrokes saved into it. The drw should be playable with the java app without needing the tmb.
If you're wanting to load the illustration to your DS Lite, you can try using a tmb file from another illustration and just rename it to match the png and drw. Then once the file is loaded into Colors!, you can save over it and it'll create a new tmb. Does that make sense?

HAHAHA Opps! i didn't see your post 'till after i edited. Thanks anyway Savante
Thanks for the compliment, timbot
btw, if anybody's looking to get a case and replacement stylus for their DS Lite, I heartily recommend the Nerf Armor and Stylus set by Pelican. Admittedly, it does add bulk to the DS's form factor, but the foam coating gives you a nice grip which I've found helps to lessen the chance of hand cramps after long drawing sessions. And the Stylus that came in the set I bought is about the size of a good pen, which is definitely more comfortable to draw with than the original Nintendo stylus.
The set I got had the stylus packed in with the armor, though looking online I can't seem to find that particular bundle, maybe it's a store exclusive...
Here's the Armor: http://www.pdp.com/prod_detail.php?sku=N7366
And this is the Stylus: http://www.pdp.com/prod_detail.php?sku=N7362
(Keep in mind, I'm talking about the Armor, which clasps around the DS Lite, as opposed to the System Case, which holds the DS, games, and adapter like a box.)
I bought mine from Target for about $20 USD.
Rodneydollah- I assume you mean the .drw files when you say movie. The .drw is the file which plays back sequentially the painting progress.
If so, yeah you just pull em off your micro SD card, via the reader i would imagine (although I've never cared enough to try it myself).
If you mean movie movie, you need to convert your media to .dpg for moonshell to read it (moonshell=DS media app, plays movies, audio, etc)

ok I went and bought a brand spankin new lite from the store, and ordered my other matts from gameyeaaah, (sons of bitches are closed throughout chinese new year) well my only question is, how do I get the files off of my computer onto the micro sd? (do I need to go buy a usb-transport?) Im using an up to date macbook, and am still not sure how to transfer the files (colours)
Luz-
I bought my R4, and 2Gb Micro Sd from Gameyeah as well. They provided a tiny connector (basically just a USB plug) that the micro sd slides into.
IF for some reason they dont provide it you'll have to pick one up. But Id be surprised if you bought both an adapter cart, and a micro SD from them and they didnt include it.
Good news is when it does ship, takes very little time to arrive in the states (less then one week, more like 5 business days)
Be patient my friend, soon you will be whiling away hours with Colors!
Oh on a sidenote. Some sort of digital painting app maybe be available for your iphone. Not colors, but I talked to Nox at the workshop and he said he had a painting app for his phone. Research it a bit you might be pleasantly surprised.

i looked on google. but couldn't find anything worth while, would you mind asking him what it is next time you see him?
Sorry, what I meant was, is there a way to take my recorded session and convert this file over to another playable format (Mpeg4, Mov……..) to be viewed on a PC or Mac with out the dependence of the colors APP.
As far as the recorded sessions go I think that anyone that is interested in learning would gain from viewing these files from other people.
Now if this is possible it would probable be best to post a link to this file to download if you post an image in this thread, unless you’re just posting for a pat on the ass. -Just my 2 cents.
i live on east coast, and ordered my r4 like 2 weeks ago, (they had chinese new year until 16th) so now its the 20th and my package has still not come >.... impatience is killer
Yeah, The R4s and M3s take quite a while to get shipped. The reason they aren't sold in retail stores is that no average gamer would buy them. That (and because they can be used to drag illegal game copies to your DS) is why they're only sold online and the production can't keep up with the requests. Just be patient.
Everyone: Nice paintings!
This looks so cool. I wanna get one of those cards.. but then i need money. Dang!
I've got a question for you Colors! pros...How do you increase the amount of slots for your colors directory? I've downloaded a bunch of .drws and some of them are named slot89 or so. I look at my own DS and there are only 15 slots, thus in order to run some of those .drw named slot89 i had to rename it under slot1-14.
I've got a 1GB R4 micro sd, and i took a look at my memory usage and I've barely used more than 20 MB, and yet when i look into my Colors! slots on the DS I've only got 15 slots for storage.
Does anyone know how to either increase or change the settings to hold more?
Well, if anyone cares I just did a little test and if you made every post consecutive, the slots will just keep increasing. That seems to work alright. So I guess save those downloaded files and rename them consecutively...
Yeah I've yet to have a problem running out of slots, and Ive done over 30 pictures on mine.

Everyone should check out Animantee. It's a freeware animation app for the DS. I saw it on Goro's blog and had to check it out. It's a lot of fun and it has a simple interface. Here's my first attempt.

Check this DS painting app coming out http://www.inchwormds.com/tutorial/
The tutorial is pretty impressive.
It's another painting app coming to DS! It is pretty robust. Even has layer support which is surprising to me. It was shown at GDC this year apparently. It's supposed to be developed by the guy behind Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly.
I'm going to be getting a DS tomorrow most likely. This will be my 3rd time buying a DS (sold pervious ones)...except this time it's all for Colors! and hopefully Inchworm DS when it comes out. I have to get a R4 card too. I saw Game Yeah has them but it says pre-order. Seems like every site has a pre-order thing going on...I guess I should just pre-order =)
It doesnt seem like theres pressure sensitivity on there... and the tool bars take up an awful lot of space. I like the l1/r1 switch to the menu that colors has.
I'm wondering where people are buying there M3/R4 cards? I looked on Amazon and they don't seem to be available. Game Yeah doesn't have any in stock. Did you guys just select pre-order and then wait for a confirmation eventually? I'm sorry if these are lame questions but I want to get a card as soon as possible.
@monkeycheese, hmm i was able to buy it right away- i guess just pre order it then or do a search on google for another provider.

Just wanted to say a huge thanks for posting this Jabo. I could not understand how to get it working for the life of me and this guide really broke things down and made it super easy. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks, i got Colors! working and am lovin it.

For the record, Game Yeah still generally ships their R4's about a week after you order, and once they are in transit its really quite quick considering the distance traveled.
