Merging layers while keeping Multiply effect

I want to merge Layer1(black lines on white background set to multiply so the white isnt visible) with Layer2(normal color). I dont want the white from layer 1 to become visible again where there is no color on layer 2.

Is there a way to do this? When I merge them, it's like if it resets Multiply to Normal on Layer1 outside Layer2

    Thanks

Which Photoshop are you using? Are you certain that layer 1 is atop of layer 2? What properties does layer 2 have? I've tried emulating your problem, but my merging works as it should: the white never appears in the colored area. I'm using CS3 by the way. Try linking the layers together, and then merging. Or just try to flatten the image (if the layering doesn't matter much).

    linking will do it.

or if you like, create new blank layer CRTL-SHFT-ALT-N and then Merge all visible to current layer (which would be the new blank) with CRTL-SHFT-ALT-E and retain your previous two layers just in case...

On a new layer, apply the image ( Image>Apply Image), and then delete the other two layers that you don't want.
