depends how much you want it. if you really like that stuff then yes. if you want it to tell people you have it, then also yes.
Would buy a $25 book? Would you buy four $25 books? There's probably at least four books worth of information in it.
hmmm....$25 book or $50 video game... um...book
His methods are a mix of academic/impressionist methods. If you're drawn to more tightly rendered classical approaches you might not get what you want from this book. Look up his work or these artists that studied with him or from his books and decide for yourself.

Even if you don't like the kind of painting or technique schmid uses, the information is useful no matter what you have in mind. If you don't like alla prima painting, practically all of the info in the book is useful for any kind of painting.

Scanned in pages from each chapter and the intro, those are a taste of all the info inside. It really is worth more than 4 books, I've bought a lot of books on painting and art, this is 5 times better than anything else I have.
I didnt see that post, thanks!Originally posted by Lev_0

I enjoy all techniques of painting, but I really like his style.
Ive got a new job paying me almost twice as much, so I shouldnt have a problem getting the book as soon as i start getting soem regular paychecks coming in!
Have any of you seen the movie he also offers on his website? I find video tutorials to be extremely helpful when trying to learn from an accomplished artist..
I got this book a few months ago and it is the best investment ever, I keep it near always.![]()
i ordered it, too. will be in germany in about three weeks... i can't wait to get my hands on it...
The book although it may seem expensive really isn't, cause it use to be more before they reprinted it. His other two books go for a 100 bucks more than alla prima cause they've been out of print for some time. I've seen schmid paints the captain, but not the landscape one. Its not really a tutorial as much as it is just watching someone good who can paint. But the book is definately worth it.

What exactly did you think of his video "painting the captain" Ive learned alot from jsut watching artists paint (real life and on TV) and I was thinkg about ordering this as well..
I think ill probably order the book monday as soon as some of my checks arrive at my credit union..
If any of you can make it to Ohio, the Richard Schmid Retrospective show (sixty eight original paintings) is on display at the Butler Institute. I just got back from the opening a few days ago and it was a life changing experience. My friends and I (ten of us!) got to meet the man himself, his wife Nancy and some of their friends, collectors and students. The show is at the Butler Institute in Youngstown, Ohio and the institute has a Sargent, a couple of Cecilia Beauxs, Thomas Eakins, Frank Duveneck, and George Innes paintings in their permanent collection. There's also a catalog of the show available with mostly pieces that aren't in any of his books.
Thanks for the heads up, but I cant make it out there...
BTW - I ordered the book a couple of days aog..
wow thats a lot of money...
not really for my budget so...well see.!!
hey dragongx, did you get your copy? i received mine yesterday and i'm blown away![]()
It's not that much money compared to a semester oil painting course . A few of the artists I mentioned previously taught themselves how to paint with this book.
Not yet! I think I ordered it last friday or saturday, so it should be coming soon.. I cant wait!Originally posted by gekitsu

Mad - Yeah.. I guess since I dropped my class I was taking for a new job that pays almost twice as much as I was making before I can now afford to buy all these books I want to get!
Does this book go pretty heavily into technique?
The only demonstration of technique I've seen this semester is my instructor stapling canvas to a frame.
I'm so out of there.
Ive read about half way through it and so far its more theory than technique.. Im thinking about ordering 2 of his painting DVDs to see how he actually applies his technique.. I jsut wish his stuff wasnt so expensive
I haven't heard about the book you guys are talking about....but if you want to see someone spectacular I would urge you to check out anthony ryders book which I believe is only 25 dollars....it is un fin believable......and I think his site is
