I have choose this picture from CgTalk, I like the atmosphere, the colours and we can imagine what is happening, the picture tells a story.

Proportion: Proportions looks good, the trees look a bit great , But we feel a world of fantasy elvish even see through the characters and that makes it easier to accept . The presence of the boat informs us and also the characters.

Balance: We may be attracted by the elements closest to us, leaves and limb but there is less detail of these places at the center of the painting, where there are characters. The light is very important for that thing i think .

    Rhythm:

The light of the small clearing gives a rather slow pace, the light is not extremely deep we feel a certain peace and tranquility, for my part I have the impression that the characters are moving slowly for a reason that I can't explain , may be due to this light.
I see no rhythm, no percussion rather an instrument like the violin, something slow and continuous.

    Emphasis:
The emphasis is clearly at the center of the image, to the place of the circle carved in stone, as if the observer targeted this place, the light reflected on the stone and the presence of characters to the location strengthens this thought.

Unity: I feel that this image has an unity, we feel the presence of a universe medieval / fantasy through the ruins, the characters and the bit. Characters are not worked as a priority, we feel a long work around the ruins, trees and water.

    The castel WIP :

Here the first sketch, a friend let me his tablet : WACOM A6 VOLITO 2 , I do not know why but I can not be precise in my traits .

For the analysis, i chose this piece by Craig Mullins.

Proportion - The crazy perspective gives him a lot of freedom with this, and so, even if the sunlit soldier is physically about twice as big as the castle thingie in the background, the scale is obvious. And while the soldier is the strongest focus, the design of the building he's standing on leads the viewer down to the crwod, creating another focal point.
Balance - This made me think. It felt a tiny bit as if the image was tilting to the right, until I discovered how the two main color blocks - the bright part with the people and the dark part with the soldiers on the building - form something like a ying-yang-thing. Those two shapes interact with and counterbalance each other. Amazing artist is amazing.
Rhythm - a lot in this piece. Ther's the many, many repeating people on the grounds, the soldiers' spears, the building balconies, the soldiers themselves - all adds to the dynamic and rhythmic feel of the piece.
Emphasis - I think this is established through lighting as well as sharpness. The soldier standing in the bright sunlight has the most contrast and is refined the most, which draws the eye immediately. I found that often the focus is the only thing you have to refine.
Unity - again the colors, almost exclusively warm tones used thorugh theout the whole painting tie it together, as well as the ying-yang-shape i mentioned above. The two main focal points - the soldier, and the crowd, to which the eye is led when following the perspective - are placed diagonally to each other.
Man, Mullins' stuff gets more awesome with every second you look at it.

Second task was to improve the portfolio piece from last week.
I found I had been lucky as i already had traces of rhythm in the thorns and some kind of scale had been established by the perspective. But the whole thing was kinda falling over, so I cropped the painting on the left, and for more rhythm, added those architecture kind of thing on the top, so it forms some kind of dome. For more emphasis, i refined the thorns more and enhanced the highlights. I also tweaked the colors and placing of the surrounding flowers to unify the picture a bit more.

Dude, I'm tired. Can't give up yet.
Here's week 4's final piece. Went a different way this time and started directly in color. But I'm afraid I failed pretty hard at the principles of design...

Wooow, this was an awesome assignment. Learned so much.
So here's my final. It's rather... speedpaintish, but i think the task of a concept artist is to communicate ideas, right?

    (Images from wikipeda)
Art Nouveau is a style which became popular towards the end of the 19th century and included all parts of art, not only architecture, but also visual art, music, design and all that good stuff. It lasted until WW1, when people had ... less time for art.
Well when looking at architecture from that time and style, first thing one notices is that a lot of elements are of decorative nature and stylized, there's a lot of flowerish patterns and ornaments, while especially windows and pillars show curved lines or round forms. Windows often contain complicated frames which break up the larger forms and create rhythm.
Reason for all this was that architects and artists wanted to break out of the classicistic movement of the time period and tried to reach a symbiosis of art and everyday life. this also meant that buildings would have to reflect what meaning and function they fulfilled, resulting in structures different from the classical 90-degree-angle-aproach in their ground plans. In the 1800s, pseudo-classical and Victorian buldings and art were mass produced, people kinda got sick of that and searched for something new and different.
Another important element seemed to be light, large windows with the aforementioned structures and a lot of glass were used to create bright, well-lit interiors.
Roofs are sometimes round, sometimes angled, sometimes giant glass domes, but never flat horizontal. Balconies, pillars and windowsills show twine-like forms, flowerish ornaments are found in balustrades and fences. This design is also to be found in the interior, with furniture and even silverware
Apart from these organic elements, there are also influences from other styles to be found. Elements from Rococo and even Japanese styles were abstracted and merged with the flowing style.
Some info from wikipedia on the history, the term 'art nouveau' comes from Siegried Bing's shop 'Maison de l'Art Nouveau' in Paris, the style then spread to Germany, Belgium and England.
I'm afraid that's not even half of those 500 words.

And now for the assignments. I had a lot of problems with creating a scene, and I seem to do more harm than good with busting though all those weeks in just a few days... ah form doesn't check this thread anyway
So here we are, I tried to make the station brightly lit and include the flowing forms, but still look like a station and somewhat modern.

    *fixed*

    Thanks Earendil

Can't really post .abr files as I don't have the money for Photoshop, instead I use Artweaver and SAI, which are both free, and openCanvas, which is about 50 bucks. I did the brushes with Artweaver.

Aaah i wanna tackle the EOW but it's over... gotta have to wait for the next, damn that delay :X
