Talking Sketchy McSketcherton - shiny and new (sort of)! 02/01/2011

Hopping on the bandwagon, getting me a sketchbook. First off, some stuff done previously:

Yu-Gi-Oh card re-deisgns - The Spirit of the Firebird Harp and Emissary of the Oasis

    The Temptation of Man
    sketch & painting

    Cecilia the Cecaelia

Lines for Chow #92 - Gangster & His Moll

This one I decided to do entirely on the computer, and have struggled with it on and off for 2 years now
Red Sky (Inspired by the Thrice song)

    changed the figure:

Work in Progress, Elements - this one is Fire (duh!)

And Newer, Progress on this week's Chow (#94) - Yin & Yang... I went for Chaos vs. Creation, tried to base the composition on the symbol itself

This week's CHOW is taking forever, fingers crossed that I finish.
C&C always welcome, and thanks for looking!

Hey you got some cool stuff! You have a good sense of colour and your pieces are well rendered and defined. I would have to say that perhaps you could show some more variety in the shapes of your faces. A lot of these girls look like the same girl. It could be what you're going for though. A lot of the guys I draw have a similar face too but it would be cool to see some more pushed and almost caricatured faces. I think it would compliment your style

Very appealing style. I love the clothing designs. Seen your work at the Chow a while ago I think, couldn't find a sketchbook back then. Glad I accidentally ran into it now. Trying to subscribe but can't find the button. :| Gave you some stars instead.
Good to see some progress shots too, very inspirational. Hope to see more of those especially. I'll be checking.

I really like your linework and color schemes. I really like "The Temptation of Man," but I'm wondering if you could push it a bit more by messing with your highlights and shadows to get a bigger tonal range?

JessiBean these are great. I love seeing WIPs in different stages of developement as you have with the harp player and creepy lich thing. All of these have just beautiful dynamism. My eye can just go 'round and 'round all day. Your figures are great and each have good personality put into their respective posistions. And the colors! So bright so vivid! Makes me happy! The first is definately my favorite. If i had one crit, it would be to increase your contrast on some of the figures only slightly in a few small areas to more deeply express their volume, but even then i'm more grasping at straws than anything. You've got great style and wonderful flow in all of these. Keep up the great work!

LOTS and LOTS of thanks to everyone for comments, and to Garrett for your crits, definately need to work on my likenesses, and I will certainly push those further in the future...

Some more things to burn the ol' retina...

Finished CHOW for this week: #94 - Yin & Yang

Some people studies I did a while back

Studying chickens for a 3D walk cycle

Thumbnails for a Holiday Calendar piece in a local paper a year or so ago

More things dealing with sin... First, Eve inspired by illuminated pages/manuscripts

Color! Inspired by a Dior haute couture fashion show...

Harry Potter fan art (I couldn't help myself) ... Bellatrix Lestrange the way I saw her from reading the books, and in retaliation for what a fool she was in the last one.

Also, studies for a self-portrait series on the 7 Deadly Sins... Lust and Envy
    Sketches

    Some of the finished pieces...

A little more light hearted, this is St. Mallard of the Marshlands, eater of Sins. He is based on a story a Jewish friend of mine told me once about going down to the river in Richmond on the New Year and feeding breadcrumbs to ducks, while thinking of and atoning for sins, and thus being cleansed for the coming year. I asked her if this means she passed her sins on to the duck... this image followed. Based on Catholic and Eastern Orthodox iconogrpahy and illuminated pages.

Last but not least, my CHOW for this week, #95 - The Squirrel Mage
    Sketch

    B&W Lighting Study
