    12-inch portable Wacom Cintiq

    Attachment 223322

One of my geekier brethren sent me this link today. He said he thought of me when he saw this

I'm not as excited about this as about the fact that we're moving in the right direction... hopefully soon there's gonna be a tabletpc we won't mind buying!

Intrigued at first until I realized you still need to hook this up to a pc. With the price, I personally would just save a bit more to get a more portable tablet pc or the 21 ux. Or just go super practical and just get a laptop + tablet to paint outdoors a la vyle, watmough, and others.

or you could just opt for the 12" fujitsu slate tablet... until a more efficient solution arrives. although those 1024 levels do sound tempting.

First I was fascinated, but then... uh: so you need a power adapter to run this thing. Which basically means it's not supposed to be a portable device.

I'd like to have this sit on my desk instead of my Int3, tho

    oh I'm surprized

I might get one if it stay around that price.

Edit, in a second thought I think it still pricey considering some TabletPC is around the same price.

The price is steep. I think I'll pick up an Intuos3 instead.

It's actually not a tablet pc (meening a full laptop system) , if you look at the picture and read about it it's just a small cintiq.
Tap the full potential of your creativity: slim, light and durable, the Cintiq 12WX enables you to work wherever you feel inspired. It fits into everyday laptop bags. So just choose your favourite working environment – all you need is a Mac or PC and power. And discover the broad variety of creative opportunities.
You still a need a computer to plug it into. See the laptop in the background? Yup.

What the hell. $1600 is ridiculous. You might as well put down the extra $900 for the 21 inch. $1000, sure, I'd probably be down with that. MAYBE $1200. But $1600? That's just not worth it. I mean, you've got tablet PCs that are just as capable, include the whole laptop experience, and are *cheaper*. So what the heck gives them the idea that 1600 is a good price for a tiny 12" screen by itself?

Heh, sorry. I've been bitter about the cintiq's price for a while and this is just fueling my rage that much more.

Have the delay and sensitivity problems not been addressed in the 21 inch models?

oh, that was in reference to tablet pcs as it's already difficult to find one that even runs on 512 levels.

    Yep, Monster's an awesome show.

And call me crazy, but... Well, I've got a 6x8 graphire at home, a 12x9 intuos here at work, and we've got a few 21UX cintiqs that we share depending on who's doin' what. And I really just don't lose much of anything in terms of pressure sensitivity between my graphire and the cintiq. Productivity is, of course, improved by the simple fact that I'm drawing on a (very large)screen, but pressure's never been a problem; and believe me, I fully utilize the pressure on these suckers. If I want bang for my buck, the 12x9 intuos is the leader imho, even if still a bit overpriced. :/

actually when you think about it, it is really amazing to notice there's no real digital portable device outside the laoptop+small wacom, even though we're in 2007.
i'm gonna go for the DS. a lot of friends have actually bought all the crap needed to have that COLORS program run on their, and i'm going to do the same.

i've never been really excited about the cintiq.
i'm pretty sure it has to do with the fact the hand is not interfering in the mental process, on a regular tablet. there's nothing in the way, and the brain is directly connected to the canvas.

"More info will become available. The Cintiq12WX is an Intuos3 tablet combined with a TFT monitor. It is a bit thicker than a normal Intuos3. You can have it flat on the desk and still rotate it. - It is connected by a single cable to a small external box with controls for the display menu. The power supply, the USB cable plus a cable for DVI or VGA connection are then connected to this box. If you do not connect the USB cable, it operates just as a monitor. If you do not connect the DVI/VGA, it operates as normal tablet."

Sweeeeeet! u can actually turn this baby off and use it like a regulair tablet, i imagine the coolest digital process availible ever

like sketch on screen, turn of and do all the bigger stuff on a regulair screen, and for details, turn the screen on again!

Neat, if not a little expensive. Well, the good news is that a Intuos 3 level tablet notebook probably isn't very far off.

Hmm, I'd personally wait for a bit more miniaturization and energy efficiency before buying a tablet notebook though. Energy efficiency takes top tier. I'd like to be able to use the thing for a solid 6 hours unplugged at full capacity. So yeah... I'll be waiting a while. I'm not in any rush though. Heh.

I remember my old laptop (bought 2003 $1200) only got 1:40 and only if I just let it sit on the desktop. If I used the internet it'd bring it down to like 1:00. It was terrible. Never trust energy efficiency ratings. Bah, tangent.

Got my DS Lite today. Awesome. A little difficult to put up Colors! and the M3/R4 operating system, but the quality of all those products is just amazing. I can put it in my pocket and carry it with me all the time. If you get one, make sure to use the "Calibrate" option in Colors! to set the pressure sensitivity, after that it's real fun to use. Worth the money, no doubt.

yeah, it works on both DS and DS lite. DS lite's touchpad is a little smaller, I think, but on the other hand, the thing itself is a lot smaller as well and the original DS is ugly as hell. So if you don't mind the smaller display, get the lite.

Nope, it isn't. They just trimmed down the "fat" around the display. : )

Ok, the problem is there's no way to connect the DS with a computer. So you have to get:

    - An M3 simply or R4 adapter card. It's basically one of those Nintendo DS cartridges but with a slot for...
    - A microSD card. You put it into the adapter, then you put the adapter into your DS and you can transfer data from your computer to the DS.
    - A microSD USB stick. A USB stick with a microSD-slot so you can copy stuff from the computer to the card.

You can get bundles with all 3 of those at various sites, just search for "Nintendo DS M3 simply" in google and you'll find what you need. The costs for the above should be about 70 Euros.

Oh, and you'll need a program to patch the .nds program files before you copy them to the microSD. They won't work otherwise. You'll get one for your OS in the second list on this page.

I heard from a, um, "guy that knows a guy", that the 12WX cintiq will be "under a grand" in the US. I'm not sure how reliable the source is, but I've also heard some other interesting theories that supports this:

Apparently the 21UX Cintiq costs significantly more in europe than in the US, as in by like $1000-$2000, and since the only price we have for the 12WX is based on a conversion from £ to $ (to the best of my knowledge), then there's a possibility that the US price will be less than the current estimation, $1600...

.... aaah, getting my hopes up is nice.

You won't easily find a Cintiq 21UX for under 3000€ here in Belgium. Quite sad actually considering the low $ price compared to the €.

The 21UX is around 2,700 Euros here in Germany. So I think the 12" will be around 900 or 1000 when it comes out.

You can already preorder the Cintiq 12WX in Germany, beginning at 1000€ (~1,466.86 USD):
    http://www.idealo.de/preisvergleich/...2wx-wacom.html

The Cintiq 21UX starts at 2860€ (~4,195.21 USD):
    http://www.idealo.de/preisvergleich/...ett-wacom.html

Man, these prices are pretty much insane.
It would be cheaper to buy a Cintiq from a US vendor, even with overseas shipping and import tax, than to buy it directly in Germany.

Let's take the Cintiq21UX as an example:

    Cintiq: 2500$
    Overseas shipping to Germany: 100$
+19% import tax at the German border: 494$
    -------------
    Total: 3094$ or 2109.27€
That means one would save roughly 26% by ordering overseas. That's crazy.
