Hello there!

Welcome to my sketchbook! I hope you'll take the time to look at some of my scribblings an perhaps leave me a crit or two.

I started this book to set some sort of goal for myself, to really get something done regularly, and of course to hear some comments from you guys. This site has got me all excited about art again, and I'm very grateful for that. I can't wait to go to art school next year!

And here we have some random face and hand studies. For the faces, no reference was used, I just scribble something and just see how it turns out. For the hands I used my own hands as reference from time to time. Should do that a lot more often! The last one is a random robot, mainly meant as a practice in rendering metal.

Here's an inked pice I did recently. I'm rather pleased with it, even though the rendering leaves to be desired. I just love how drawings can just emerge out of a single line, like this piece did.

And finally some digital sketches, one of my window around the evening, and one of some random guy with a glowing hand of some sort. In case you're wondering, the ugly brown strokes on the windowpane are my attempt at rendering the light coming form my lamp...

The inked trees really are great. I don't think it really needs any filling, except maybe the background. Looks complete just the way it is I'd love to see more pieces like that! Nice hand and face studies to boot... keep the posts up

Your work with pencil very good and your digital paintings need more and more hours of practice. But don't worry... me too.

Shankara:Yes it's true, I'm not too good at digital painting yet, and these pieces show it all the more because they are really quick sketches that didn't take longer than half an hour. So far, I prefer traditional methods anyway, it's just more real and satisfying.

Alright, let's not fill this post with just talk. Here's some more face studies I did, a character sketch, and something I did from reference. Can't give you the ref though, I have no idea where I found it anymore

I'm getting the hang of this Here's a piece I've started working on this afternoon, a little rough in some spots but I work rather unsystematic. Well, maybe not that unsystematic, I always start with the most interesting part
About the subject, it's just your standard galactic overlord on his throne, planning his ultimate attack to ensure total domination, or just enjoying a moment alone in his throne room...

Hey, I'm back again with some new pencil drawings. First are a few faces (again), and then a little conquistador-esque sketch. I did some PS sketches too, but none of them are worth showing...at the moment.

I've just come back from my vacation and still have a lot of traditional sketches waiting to be scanned, but for now I have a PS image I redid lately. Looking back at most of my digital paintings I came to the conlusion I was far too shy in using values! Most of the pictures just looked dull and gained so much from just a little tweaking of the contrast. With that in mind I mace some changes to a sketch of mine from some time ago and it came out way better than the original.

The person in the picture was originally just meant as practice, but she has become some sort of cyber-zombie. She has been brainwashed by staring at screens all day, just as I feel sometimes after working on the computer for hours. It always gives me such a headache and I'm constantly staring and feeling numb...I imagine this girl feels just like that, in some future world where there are screens and monitors everywhere, and your senses are constantly bombarded with information. Can't be good for you...

Hmmm I really need to crank out more work in order to get noticed here This is a PS doodle I worked out a bit, not in the direction I originally wanted it to but it's always nice when something just comes together without planning. At first I tried some exaggerated anatomy, and then made it into some sort of giant standing in front of a cityscape. Since he was bending over like he was bracing himself for something I added a few blasts and gunfire and helicopters to make it into some sort of Hulk scenario. It's still WIP, though I don't know when I'll finish it. I'm already doing other pieces right now.

A little late, but here is a selection of some skecthes I did during my vacation. Scanning these I noticed how much open space I leave on my pages...I'll try to fill them more next time...

Nothing like spending a sunday morning painting! Here is the result. I'm quite happy with how the forms and the lighting came out, I feel like it's really a bit of a breakthrough for my digital skills. I had some trouble with the foreshortened arms, but it looks ok now. I don't really know how to take it further, perhaps I'll pick it up later and finish it.

Another update! I revisited an oil sketch I made a few days ago. I really ruined it by trying to color the background, so I scanned it and reworked it in Photoshop. The result is pretty nice. There's something about the turban that's not really right, but it was only a quick sketch and I'm very satisfied with the face especially.

Well, it's a bit of a lousy update but I've been really busy lately. I'm doing an oil painting for my stepdad who will celebrate his 50th birthday soon, and that combined with some important school tests has left me with very little time to sketch...here's a quick PS sketch I just made, and another one from a few days ago. PS is still hard for me, but I'm learning it.

Edit- I've added a more refined version of my goblin sketch. I like the outline effect I made, but I'm unsure if it fits the image. I was just toying around a bit.

So, I've been away for a while, due to some business that demanded a lot of attention (damn holidays). It's not that I haven't sketched in the mean time, but I lack the time and will to scan stuff so I'll just present you a WIP piece, very unoriginal but hey, perfect for practice. What started out as a simple linedrawing (which kind of sucked, I'm horrible at drawing good lines with my tablet) has now been coloured. When the whole end-of-year ordeal is over, I promise to be a little more active in this SB.

I'm planning on doing a series of paintings, either digital or in oils, with music as a theme. I've chosen a few songs form bands I like, and will try to capture both lyrical subject and musical mood in one picture. First one I'm going to do is the song "The Hanging Tree" by progrock band Arena. That song just gives me the goosebumps everytime, and it's so wonderfully calm. I want to portray that lonely feeling, of a traveller who returns to the "roots" of this massive tree that calls to him. I've done a quick study in aquarels, to get an idea of the mood I want. Aquarels are really hard for me, but they're great for studies like this.

I've decided to try doing the Hanging Tree in digital, quite a challenge because I'm not too experienced with it. But I'll never learn it if I don't try to use it. So here's a little WIP, mainly focused on getting the colour right. It will become darker later on.

So, it's been a while since my last update! I guess when my agenda becomes busy, it's the internet that has to wait. Not sure if that is a bad thing though...Anyway, I've sketched around a bit lately, partly for CHOW 100 and also some random stuff, like the extremely colourful head below, or the man in the suit. And yes, also a little christmas card...

After several attempts at doing my sketches digitally it was a relief to come back to normal pencils again. Digital media are great, especially in the hands of professionals, but for pure working pleasure I absolutely prefer good old analog media. I'm still thinking of doing the final for CHOW 100 with oils.
Anyway, here is a sketch I'm very satisifed with. I dug up some reference on Greek clothing and found some interesting styles and patterns that I've tried to work into my sketch.
On the character side of it, I read some versions of the Medusa myth and fell for one particular story, with Medusa being not so much of an evil lady, but a mortal woman who has become victim of yet another quarrel of the gods.

Medusa was originally the high priestess of a fertility cult worshipping the sea, and one night, during a sacred ritual, Poseidon himself came to visit this cult. He slept with the priestess, and made her pregnant. Athena punished her for doing this, and turned her beautiful hair into a nest of snakes. She also tried to steal away her beauty, but the power of the half-god growing inside her prevented the curse from fully taking effect. Her gaze however was so frightening that it turned men into stone. Therefore she covered her eyes, and lived on blindfolded. This was not enough for Athena, so she sent the hero Perseus to kill her.

This version of the myth makes Medusa a more tragic character, victimized by the wrath of Athena.

Medusa is nicee! You should make it more interesting though, make her do something. Add story to your piece.

Woo! A comment Dank je, Frans! You're right, it's all a bit static right now, but this is not the final pose. It was more of a study for the dress. Now I've got to bring her alive! Not sure how though, I'll keep doing sketches for the next couple of days. January 6th seems so far away, but I know I'll have to step on it now. As for the studies, I really, really should get a good anatomy book...can't seem to find anything in the bookstores, maybe I should try the internet.

Alright, here you go Vigilandus! I did a quick lineout of the Medusa outfit and scanned it so I could colour it in PS, and decide on a colour scheme. This was all rather quick, just checking some possibilities. I like the first one, but it is a bit too light, and therefore I made a second sketch. I think it will be some sort of combination of the two, the layered colours of the underdress from #2, and the rest like #1. It should really be a marine colour scheme if I am to follow the myth, which I'm planning to do.

Oh yeah, I made some thumbnails too about the composition of the piece. It's rather unintelligible, but I like to work messy during initial sketches, as long as I hit a good idea. Perhaps you can figure out what it will be like, because I like this one. Struggling with the perspective...

Also included here is something I did yesterday when I was a bit bored. I browsed through the photography thread here on CA, found this photo by Zemotion, and copied it loosely with charcoal. I know it's not the best kind of practice but it was fun and I learned another technique that way, ie blending charcoal with a brush and using multiple layers. In fact, I was so happy with it I did some experiments with it later on. Both results you see here. Thanks Zemotion for the excellent photograph, and I hope you don't mind me shamelessly copying it!

A quick update for today...I decide on a pose for Medusa, sitting on a throne in despair. I've begun to set up the picture, first with some solid forms, like the throne, and then added the lighting. I've placed a figure in there too, with some crude lighting. It now comes down to getting the shapes right, and maintaining good values. I'll worry about color later, I really want to do it step by step. I'll post more updates as I go.

Whoa! Updating daily! This better become a routine! Anyway, here's a more refined version of the B/W I posted earlier. Wasn't too happy about the figure, so I blocked in another one, without lighting yet, but better than the first IMO. I like how it is coming along, it really pays off to approach this picture more systematically than I'm used to.

Second image is a more random sketch of Lara Croft. My mom (yes, my mom!) loves to play the Tomb Raider games. During yet another session, I drew this, while watching my mother struggle with the controls. I'm always on standby in case the action gets too dense, she always becomes nervous when that happens. I'll gladly help her out at such times

Use lots of layers so you won't mess up like I do.
