I am not that skilled with drawing or painting, but i really really want to get better. So here i will post some drawings/paintings i have done and hopefully i will get to awesome status. Please leave me your comments! All and any help is much appreciated

Sometimes I disappear for months or years because I work in the Video Game industry and we have to make games. I don't do anything art related so it's not like I get to practice.

Below I'll put the latest image that represents the style that i'm currently working on.

This is the first thing i ever drew/colored on my computer.

So This is a tree that i can't say i came up with originally on my own. I was lurking around the CA boards and saw someone's sketchbook but i don't remember whose and i tried to draw what they had done. And I thought i book marked their page but i didn't and I can't give proper credit where it's due. So it makes me sad. But here is a WIP of a picture i was trying to copy but have no clue where to find the original so it started to take it's own turn.

And now i must sleep for tonight because of work in the morning.

Greetings frozenbears..thought I'd make the 1st comment in here good to see you studying away...one thing to look at is your colour choices, a lot of these feel a little muddy. A really nice way to make an image pop is to have dark extremes, and light extremes...its the interaction between the two that is pleasing to the eye. Your moving towards this in your 1st tree image, but you could have pushed it a lot furthur, and with a little tweeking, made it really shine. Keep drawing!

daveneale: Thanks! Colors... It is something i've been trying to figure out. I've never taken any art classes or read any art books so i've been trying to do all of this on my own. I will for sure be taking your advice on the next piece i work on.

Friday Night:

I just got back from being out and about and haven't had much time to draw today.

I've been messing with Illustrator at my work and i've made some basic cut-out style characters.

And also from the archives is this Dog-Item that i drew 2 or 3 years ago i think.

Frozenbears you should try to put more light and shadows in your sketches you need more contrast ! i think that a hard brush would help you a lot, try it once, to use a brush with edges and not the blury one that is ! keep it up and have fun !

Tiberiu: Thanks! Yeah i've been trying to look more into trying the hard brushes. I just have to mess around with them more. And yeah i still don't quite understand lighting.

I've been trying to go back and learn the basics on how to draw cartoons. People told me i should go back and actually learn, instead of just messing around. The Preston Blair Animation 1 book came highly recommended so i thought i'd give it a try. So this isn't really concept art or anything, but i figure it will help me get a better grasp of something that may help me. I discovered i can hardly draw a circle so this practice will at least help me get better control of my drawing.

Your pencil work is a lot more solid than your digital painting. I would suggest continuing you pencil studies. Try to do a variation of line studies as well as value studies.

The value studies will come in handy when you try to paint, because you should be taking value into consideration when you pick colors.

And dont be affraid to try some traditional medium, even though I know this place is full of the digital goodness.

pencil good, keep practicing. painting needs more light and dark. old masters usually had 1/4 to 1/3 of their figure in the dark.

lastly, don't date/sign your work, your already good at that. use the time and led for practice.

Sublimus: I think i'm going to take your advice and stick with pencils for a while until i get more familiar with the traditional medium. Do you have any specific suggestions on doing studies?
swordmaster_g: Thanks, yah i won't be signing them anymore. The dates are just so i remember and can keep track of progress. I only have huge sheets of paper so i do random drawings all over the place and will use the same page for several days.

My Co-workers are avid University of Southern California (USC) fans. And being a UCLA graduate i had to fight against my rivals so i drew the UCLA Bruin and put it in their office.

The problem I'm seeing right now is that (like me) you lack foundation. I think you should get yourself some Vanderpoel or Bridgman books, or loomis, which is freely available through an internet near you. Start studying anatomy seriously, it will help a lot, and everything else is gpoing to get easier

algenpfleger : Thanks! It's really intimidating going to the book store and looking at all the different choices of books and there is always the chance that you'll end up picking up the crappy one. Well anyways i went to the store and picked up the Vanderpoel and Bridgman anatomy books. If you have anymore suggestions that would be great! Thanks again!

Hey, keep up the anatomy study, theyll help big time. Draw a lot from observation, thats a very important practice thats also very fun
With painting try avoid using bright saturated colours from the start. The paintings of the trees are great because they have more muted colours. Saturated colours are usually found in the midcolour but it might be quite selective. Also try not to use absolute black paints, they dont actually exist in reality and can flatten an image.

Wow dude you are determined! Great to see you started doing those studies. Just don't ever give up, if you start to create a daily practice routine you're going to improve fast, seriously. I got used to doing one or two pages a day and it really helps.

Bendragon: Thanks! Once I get a grip of things i'm for sure going to start using real people as references. I'll definitely keep those painting tips in mind. I've put painting on hold until i get a better command of drawing.

Today's drawings come from the Bridgman book Constructive Anatomy. again with eyes. I'm not too happy with anything i've drawn today. I'm not feeling well at all, so i think i've rushed these more than i should have.

hey frozen,
i see you make some of your drawings simple with the linework and colors. very cool, sometimes the most detailed art and the most simple art are alike in expression. i really like the romantic cliche, wish it was kinda brighter, the sun. but id give you thumbs up on that, but as for crits go, your shades and lights seems to be on the same level, try experimenting with different colors on some of them or different darkness on some shades. ill keep checkin this sketchbook out. keep em posted

l0stinth0ughts: Hey thanks for the comment. A lot of my old painting stuff is a lot darker than i wanted it to be. Back when i made a lot of those i was using a laptop that showed things a lot brighter than they really were so i tended to make things darker thinking that they were in the middle range. I'm not good with lighting yet but i totally know what you mean about the shading. If you have any suggestions for books or tuts that'd be great!



I should really stop drawing today, i feel too sick, but i want to level up my drawing skills so i keep trying trying trying. I'm unhappy with how these turned out. I must go barf now. The flu be kicking. These are from Vanderpoel's The Human Figure... #3 drank my milkshake, he drank it up.

So i am still battling sickness... Someone told me i had to beat the game "Mass Effect" because i was probably the only person with an xbox360 who had yet to see the PG-13 sex scene with blue nipples. I was actually really close to the end and had stopped playing it, so i figured i would pick it up today since i am sick.

I tried drawing but it's hard to do from bed, holding up the massive freakin lapboard I have takes way too much energy... whereas pushing buttons is far easier. Or i'm just a lazy bastard today. you decide.

So here we go some half-assed drawings that i did in this really tiny tiny book that can fit in pants pocket. My compromise to holding up a huge piece of pressed wood was pressing down the incredibly springy binding of this tiny little book that ended up requiring just as much effort/energy.

The first is a dude. I think this is somewhere in the Bridgman book but i don't remember. I remember seeing it somewhere but i tried to draw it without looking at where ever it was i saw it.

There there is this nose thing... I did that without looking at anything.
There is a really shitty eye with scribbles over it on this page too but i choose to ignore it's existence.

Then some up close nose action. so that you can see that i really don't know what i'm doing or that this man has boogers up his nose... again you decide.

These are really embarrassingly horrible...
