ok i just put them over onto a pc to watch (though even with the codec being given with ur files, the first video never played), but this isnt exactly what i was looking for. sure its good to see the picture being done. but i cant learn how its done if i can see what tools you are using. all i see is a picture being painted.
what i want to know what to do is to know how to do it, how to use the tools. this i cant learn withotu being able to see it.
anything else to be offered to do this? cause i am lost...
Uhm dude, I wasn't replying to you ... I was just posting a few studies. @_@
If you want to know how to use the tools, use them. Experience is what you need. One of the smartest lessons I had in school was the first lesson with acrylics. We had no subject to paint and no objective other than to learn the tool. You can't use a tool unless you know it - and you can't rely on others to show you everything, indeed you have to be able to teach yourself. Treat photoshop as a sandbox and play for awhile, it's much easier than frustrating yourself and doing nothing.
oh sorry. didnt notice you were replying to someone else. my bad.
but yeah, i was trying to learn it. but thats what was frustrating. im one of those people that learn best if shown
IA is right, it's something you won't be able to pick up all from watching someone else sadly.. there's just too many "X" factors.. while it can show you an idea as to how to approach things and the reason we have this thread but to pick every tool and stroke is out of the question. you just gotta get your hands dirty and you will soon work out what works for you and what doesn't, as said above, experience.... just take it easy and start with something small.![]()
guess i have no choice. now that christmas break is aprouching i will have time. so hopfully ill grasp thing over that time period.
im doing graphic design coarses and i really want to up my illustrations. It will help alot. i want to be able to do this type stuff to look good for my portfolio when i finish the coarse in 2 years
i do alot of sketches and conept art for chracters for a illustration oarse im goign to be doign. I want to wow my teachers
Ok, I suck.
Glad we got that outa the way, Im happy with how this turned otu personally - Because my Photoshop colouring skills have come a LONG way.
But still, Its probably the worst apple here >.> But iit anyway.
EDIT: Picture.. so.. small.. cant..see..any..detail :'( (The last one has my name scrathed into it)

corza334: i use that blending process a lot.. it is very fast doing that with the keybord shortcuts. and about the wacom, i think any wacom is way much better than a mouse, so if you're into painting in photoshop, get one already! =) i got my wacom for 50 euros and it has like 512 levels of pressure sensivity and tablet size is 10x13 cm's its very tiny, but for now i'm happy with it =)
yeah tablet is sort of essential.. the fact that it's more natural way to paint/draw but also it's hazardous for your wrist/hand if you use mouse.. as Arbu mentioned it's not very expensive so see if you can grab one asap.. wacom grapphire 6x8 should be plenty to get you started!
Alrighty, Ill have a look at one ASAP - Except i just spent all my money on traditional art gear xD But ill save for a wacom... But till then -plugs in old Drawing tablet- Ill give this a burlAnd, Any comments on my apple?
unfortunately this did not take me one, but TWO hours... gaah, I am so slow.![]()
well, maybe not too bad for my first real attempt at painting on photoshop. Everything I have tried to do up until now has pretty much been half-hearted attempts to cell-shade lineart.
I some how managed to deleat my second step...
yeah... I kinda got lazy on the shadow...

Thanks for putting this thread (and the previous one) together, bumskee! Reading through your approach and watching your step by steps was very useful. Thanks as well Mr. Idiot Apathy for your wise words.
Here's a red onion I did the other night:
I learnt a few things about colour and bounced light doing this. Just have to try and retain the knowledge now...
Cheers, Nick.

wow nice onion. I have been messing with some stuff andhave got way better at blending This thread helped understand that allot. I need to get some more paintings done from life. going to have to grab some fruit soon. My next big challenge is texture, that is an alltogether new beast. I have tried to mess with some of the brushes but have not found much in the way of things I like. I need to figure out how to import new brushes so I can mess with some of the ones in the shared section too.
I've graduated from Photoshop Elements to CS3 so that helped out allot too.
I'm pretty happy with my results. What do you guys think?

Here's my first attempt at painting in photoshop.

Ah, it's good to be back on conceptart and see one of my favorites threads still kicking. Gotta get back in doing more of these studies so here it goes. Thanks Bumskee for keeping this alive.

Jambanana: Maybe it's me, but what is your painting of? Looks sort of like a diver's helmet to me, but maybe I'm wrong.
Yeah it's not the first time I get that. It's my webcam, logitech messenger.
Pretty much made the object that was sitting closest to me.

Well here is my apple, Im still trying to learn the art of Photoshop
Things to consider:
Follow the steps! Dont go right into the details after 3 seconds of filling up the colors!
Ok this is my second try. I'm still having problems with the stem.

Here is my apple. Its my first attempt actually draw sth digitally. I mean, I've never used blending and etc before. So any c's are appreciated. I would like to improve on this ps cuz it is really fun!
What do you think?
Note: I didn't use any models so now think that there is a huge problem with the shape... I*ll do it again![]()
Ok I think this one is better. This time I used an apple for details and the true form.
What should improve do you think?
Thanks for the thread by the way! It really helps
hi ho
APPLE ..
[PIC 1]STEP 1- Sketch the basic shape of the apple, and color positions. Block in colors, dont use soft brushes.
[PIC 2]STEP 2- Blend up, dont add any details yet.
[PIC 3]STEP 3-Detailed blending, add bigger details.
[PIC 4]STEP 4-Add smaller details, colors, lighting, fix any mistakes, basically add finishing touches.
Tips
-Soft brushes can be a disaster.
-Try using other brushes to create texture.
I'm having problems getting the edges of my items to be crisp. It would be great if anyone had any advice concerning that.
Cherries....(which are very hard to paint when you have a person sitting next to you who keeps on trying to eat them when you're not looking) ...
... and a cup (which the person did not try to eat). I apologize for the lame background. The page just looked too empty.

You have my gratitude for continuing a very resourceful thread Bumskee. I'd also like to thank IdiotApathy for his insightful tips and critiques. Thanks gentlemen.
Recalling back to my first post to the original Digital Painting thread, things sure have changed. After that thread I took another two year break and have returned to take another crack at painting digitally.
Here is a still life study of an Asian pear that I muddled through in Photoshop.
Here is my work process:
Another still life fruit study with this time a delicious Fuji apple.
Here is my work process:
And I'll be starting one more fruit study then I'll migrate to another topic.
Ok dudes. here is mine.

After getting bored of apples, I did a banana.

hi everyone! This is my first post here at CA. I'm just getting started with painting in photoshop and joining this thread seemed like a good way to learn. This is my first try at painting something fabric-like. It was a quick 20 minute sketch. Looking forward to hearing your crits![]()
here's another painting i just did of a tangerine![]()
