Thats a good painting nethus... I just think the apple itself is ugly, probably why you aren't overjoyed with it. Its all discolored and brown, and doesnt even have a stem. Thats why i always choose brighter fruits to draw; they're more fun!
Colorful things are always more enjoyable for me.

I was pretty satisfied with these, my first time attempting to paint fruit.. I spent about 2 hours on each one, I'm still slow as balls..

I think I need to work on rendering details 'cause at that part I sort of do what I think looks good, doesn't come out too great.

Thoughts are more than welcome, guys.

Personally I think it's a beautiful apple Nethus. Great Job! Pau1Winslow, that's great too nice rendering... although i think it looks a little bit too red... perfectly understandable if the light source was completely white, as well as the apples surroundings... Nice job though!

Yeah I like it, too, nethus, the development is really smooth and kept to a nice shape.

    Nice work Winslow.

I feel sure that there would have been more variation in colour in the apple though. You've painted it in a pretty even red colour.

    Good effort winslow.

It's looking a bit overwhelming though. The saturation levels over the whole thing are very high, and I imagine it would have varied a bit more. Once again I feel like you could have found more colour variations int his, although you've improved in that over the apples. I'd say be careful with using really thin lines to put detail over your large colour masses.

Also try and put a bit more effort into the cast shadow of the object aswell. It helps describe the shape and position of it more than you might realise.

Here's another apple. forgot to save sketch. Did this one quicker than the other one. around 1.5 hours I think. Could go much further with it but I'm out of time for now. Definitely need practice with the physical act of blending two tones/colours.. I should just do some simple blending exercises.

Again trying to get the tones and colours close. Exaggerated strength and saturation in some colours a bit to make it a bit more vibrant.

    Really enjoy this excercise.

    Hehay. This was real useful.

My attempt (but not using an apple, instead a small wooden elephant ^_^ ):

    C&C welcome ^_^

    EDIT:

I had another go, with an Eye this time:

    Hey sketch1991.

When you're working stay to larger brush shapes, and don't use smaller ones too much. Keep your colours and tones quite solid, otherwise it can look scratchy and messy. You're better off using bigger simple blocks of colour and tone then putting any detail in.

Also I think might want to do some close study on the anatomy of an eye. Yours isn't working too well :] the main reason being is you have a tear duct (not sure what the red fleshy bit in the corner is actually called ) on both sides of the eye. I'd recommend drawing a few from reference so you get the feel of how an eye works.

    Hi nethus

Ta for the comments. The eye was drawn from imagination, plus there's tiny red bit in the opposite side to the tear duct, but ya, mine is too big.

I'll try have ago with bigger brushes.

    Thanks again for comments ^_^

Right, I had another go at an eye, and I love the outcome!

I followed nethus's idea of keeping to larger brushes, I also played around with overlays and things.

    Result:

I spent alot of time on this and am proud of it ^_^

    C&C welcome [needed]!

Not a bad work at all sketch.
After all your first one, didn't impress me so much, but your second work of an eye looks quite nice.

    Good job with it.
I also got some nice ideas from your work, sketch =).

    Haha, thanks zolun!

Yeah, looking back at my other two, they're kinda crap, but nethus's advice of using larger brushes was real uselful. Glad you like 'em ^_^

Thank you. I agree that as of late my pieces are fairly saturated and mushy; unfortunately as a result of those attributes they tend to look rather devalued. I'll continue to practice and experiment.

I've been keeping an eye on your series of studies and you've definitely have a knack for identifying color values. It shows with the bold, crisp forms that you've posted. There tends to be a pattern with your pieces that leaves a bit of lingering of interest to see you flesh your fruit studies some more. I would like to preach better advice that could be more helpful, but I need more experience since this feels somewhat different than oil painting.

I look forward to seeing more from you.

Visit a grocery store or rob Skrog's kitchen counter. You need your fruits and veggies to do more studies!

I can't remember if I sent you a critique through Sketcher or not. Hmm. In any case I want to see more, sir.

Before I forget here is a recent study. Click here for an animated GIF that shares my unorthodox painting process.

Sketch1991 - thanks man, you're right. problem is that I worked at 50% zoom out but still the stage was a bit too small an dit was harder to add details to the stem and its surroundings. Nice eyes by the way

great work on the bannana shou' !

Hi every one! This thread also inspired me to draw some fruit. Here's a tangerine. I didn't save my steps, sorry for that :-) Next time I will save them.
Thanks to eveybody and especially Bumskee for his great tips on blending, because I didn't know how to do this before using Photoshop! Hope you like my tangerine and ofcourse crits are always welcome!

Thanks Call0ps! It's always difficult to post for the first time...
About the edges... Do you mean that they are to sharp or is there something else I can improve on? It would help me with my next fruit/vegetable

By the way, your apples look great too! Good job!
