Hiya CA'ers, I've been following along with you guys in the shadows for quite sometime but the overwhelming want to learn has lead me to begin my journey and post . Like mostly everyone here I've been drawing since I was a child but once highschool hit I really lagged behind on my art since I was usually thinking negative thoughts. Towards my last year when I was a senior I began to really start practicing and attend lifedrawing classes at my local community college. I'm now 21 and have a strong desire to practice everyday and I'm very excited knowing that I will improve with this community Now enough talk, more scribbles.

Hey KidApe, great start to the SB! Some really nice stuff here..Liked the Ashley-wood'esque paintings, but go a little crazier with those brush strokes next time, Its all about creating a dynamic feel with the strokes! Really dig your single moleskine image. Keep swamping this sb and welcome to the sb section.

Thanks for the advice Brozzi, i think i see what you mean about being crazier with the brush. Now that I look at Wood's work there are brushstrokes ripping right off of the bots and into the background,etc. I will remember that next piece I do.

Okay, well a couple days ago I picked up two tubes of oilpaint and some turpentine. Here goes my journey:
First oil study, man I really prefer oils over acrylics alreadyXD


second go at it, i think I spent around an hour on each one. I'm pretty happy with this bananna


3rd, disapointed with how it turned out but I guess I'll learn that not each one is going to be better than the last. heh.


and ending off with a different fru..err vegetable? lol. This one got me excited, starting to pay more attention to values and squinting my eyes a lot.




I've been pretty busy with the creature contest, so once that ends I will be doing one a day, inspired by seedlings activity=D

Blah, I tried painting a potato today but I just had too much difficulty in trying to sculpt the forms with shadows. I kept making the paint go muddy, but did learn somethings in the process.

I will start cropping my images in my updates, just wanted to show the size of studies compared to those crazy bulldog clips clamped onto my board=D. Till next time, peace!

Looks like you're busting out the studies. I'm digging the strangely horned deer thing. It'll be sweet when everyone gets their 100 COWs done, sweet to see that you're participating in that contest. Keep posting thew work, you'll get better quick.

Hey,
Nice start with the oil paints. Something you may or may not be aware of is that not all white and black oil paints are made equal (kind of goes for other colors as well). I'm not really sure of which two you have there but it looks to me like they are probably pretty opaque and on the cool side of the spectrum. If you wanted to add a little more variation while still keeping to black and white you could play around with using a warm transparent black and or white. They just over all act differently. For me personally I prefer using Titanium White (a cool opaque) and Lamp Black (a warm transparent) most of the time, but still keep around a Flake/Lead white (a warm transparent, toxic) and Ivory black (cool opaque) just for special times of use which does inevitably happen. Anyways, I'm probably rambling at this point. Keep up the studies!

Thank you for the kind words. Mybutterflyiris-I've heard about warm and cool black and whites but haven't had much experience in seeing the difference. I'm currently using titanium white and ivory black. Qadi- for the dots, I googled for some halftone comic dots and them cut them out in PS=D

Black and white oil paints are fun and all, but I enjoy doing monochromatics with white and a dark non black color, like Burnt Sienna. Then eventually you can add in a few other colors to mess with color temperature, and eventually start making palette choices. Digi SP looks pretty good, maybe just darken core shadows more next time. Hopefully the COW's going alright, mine's kicking my arse.

Thanks Blue, I don't feel confident enough to work with colors just yet but the other day I did start experimenting with a limited pallet of ultramarine and yellow ocher. I will post it up once I get hold of a camera.

Okay, so I'm trying to get into the habit of doing some warmup sketches before I start painting to settle my mind a bit. Two gestures of my sleeping dog

Okay, I've been studying Bridgeman and Hogarth lately but decided that by doing characters I would have a bit more fun with the learning process. Hopefully I will get past the skewed heads eventually.

Cool stuff man. I like how loose the black and white fruit studies are. I think that you should incorporate that more into the imaginative robot stuff. I also like the pencil sketches. The have a nice loose quality and I think that if you really got your proportion and anatomy down they will look awesome. So, keep coming to the figure drawing.

Okay, time to get the ball rolling. I've been practicing lately and have been attending the local art association on mondays to practice figure drawing.
I've been practicing with ink and did a couple monkeys!

This guy is a test pilot:


and this gorilla had some augmentations done to communicate with his mind.


this was a comissioned piece for a coworker, not too happy with the contrast, oh well.

this one was very fun, starting to mess around more with a toned backing and working up to the lights and down to the darks

tmbritton: Thanks for the kind words, I really do try to stay loose and expressive and hope to transfer that trait over to my paint. You're right about my anatomy, I'm still not confident when it comes to drawing limbs especially from my head. I need to work on my contours much more.

Ash888: Ash, thank you! Well, I would love to work in the art field in some form, a concept artist would be wonderful! That, or exploring intense subject matter as a fine artist

Nice update. Cool to see the same subjects drawn by somebody else. I really like how your shading gives a good sense of the planes of an object. Like the faces that you've spent some time on for example. Very cool stuff. I also like that your self-portraits aren't just academic studies, but have a lot of character to them.

Great job with the eye and the ear.
In the pill portrait I like your colors and design, I would fix the jaw.
As it approaches the neck, it stops making sense.
