my sketchbook link is in my sig, but for the sake of following directions:

    my sketchbook

What I'm interested in, is fine arts and illustration. I'm also interested in teaching eventually. It is really enjoyable to be able to share knowledge with others. Concept art interests me as well, but one of the main reasons I started creating things was more about being able to express things I didn't want to talk about because I felt like an idiot, or lacked the ability to properly articulate. Ideas of self, as well as thoughts on what occurs around me.

I'm mostly interested in learning how to properly apply tools (composition, color theory, rhythm, perspective, symbols, design...etc I'm sure there are more that I don't know) to aid me in communication of my thoughts/ideas through drawing and painting. [i also want to be able to do stuff that just looks cool *cough*] At first my biggest struggle was trying to figure out what I needed to learn to advance. Now that I am aware of many of these things, I need to learn how to apply them. I only barely understand many things. I can see it in other people's work, but struggle to make use from scratch. I think this is where quantity of studies with a goal in mind comes in. I thought I understood values, then I did some value studies, and then thought i understood value, and then did more....and realized that I didn't have a clue before...and still need more work on them

as requested, here's an example of my current work.

    stuff I like

the images of what gets me going. This was a hell of a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. Only selecting three things.

The first image is by rick berry. It seems he just understands paint. How he is using the paint i find remarkable clever because still reads very clearly, even though there is just a lots of jargon, and drawing that shows through. Also using the figure compositionally is something that interests me. There is so white! but still this whiteness does not scour my eyeballs! well used negative space, and positioning of the figure to create an interesting composition. I also enjoy the restricted palette a lot.

the second image is parkour. Parkour for me is more about the philosophy, and the ability to go beyond boundaries. Physically, mentally and socially. The ability to overcome obstacles that are meant to herd us in a certain direction. The ability to push your physical limits, which is unique to each individual. Breaking through societies constructs of them telling you what you can and can not do. When I talk about it, what I say seems so obvious, but it's been a very freeing experience.

the third image is by jon foster. I enjoy his palettes as well as the dynamics of his figures. The exaggerations and stylizations he makes always seem to be a secondary skillset, not a weakness like it is for some. his ability to transform, simplify, and exaggerate. There was another image by jon foster I actually had in mind, but as I thoroughly enjoy most of his works...I suppose it doesn't really matter.

    stuff I don't like

the fountain- duchamp. the whole r. mutt thing really just irritates the hell out of me. There is being clever, and just being an ass. There isn't any creation process. If there *needs* to be written explanation to understand what the viewer is looking at, I think that as an artist you fail.

    kandinsky.
erm I remember this from one of my art history classes. I don't like the theory behind it, nor do I think there is any real skillset involved. If there is less skillset behind a work of art, i think there should be some kind of message, or meaning that will carry through. I get neither from this. In fact, I'd have no idea what it was had I not seen the previous comp, and had someone explain to me what the hell he was trying to do.

    week 2 homework

week 2 homework: personal work [two small acrylic paintings in sketchbook] + portrait study [is larger than I drew it at to fit the 800 x 1280 specs]

taking photos of artwork is...well I'm just not good at it. They're 4x6 inches each.

scanned them at school and replaced.
