Ooops sorry dude - thought I had replied! I went to Coleg Ceredigion in Aberystwyth mate - smallish college but was fun and had some great tutors! They weren't keen on my cartooning to begin with but by the end when they could tell I was serious about seeking a career with it they let me do a few assignments based on cartooning! To be honest it was a good thing they helped me focus on other things too, as I got to study more art styles and was where I found out I also love graphic design Good times.

Neat portrait man, that's coming along real nice. A little crit, be careful with the lines you use around the mouth, those lines if not placed correctly can make such a difference, for example, right now, IMHO they're not helping =/, in the man yes, but not in the woman, still... it's coming along really good

Hey thanks buddy yeah you're right! on further comparison to the photo ref I've also got the ladies face a little too wide at the moment! oops o.o hehe was meant to be more of a caricature when I started out but has turned into a straight up portrait...

Hiya. Your last post tickled me, that's exactly what I go through everytime i do a caricature Doing lots of thumbnails helps.

The last two pen caricatures are pretty cool I like the guy with the cap. The guy at the wedding..I think you've done too many lines on his face. Still looks like him though and it's just my opinion, but I think less is more when it comes to pen drawings of faces.

Also like the vector style portrait on your last post..looking good

haha yep - I'm doing these straight into illustrator using the brush tool for the caricatures and using the pencil tool set to fill only for the vector portrait. Yeah sketching first looks like a good plan as it would help explore the features more freely I guess - at the moment it's kinda like a sculpting process where I draw a hideous version and gradually pull it together to look like the person lol!

The vector wedding portrait of the couple is proving to be tricky as my mate likes the version I posted before but when I did more work on it and cleaned it up he wasn't so keen ... so good job I still have the last version! Currently working on cleaning it up while attempting to retain what it is he likes about the 1st draft!

    Finished Caricatures!:

The dude with the cap is me - here is the finished version!

and yeah - the one of my mate certainly was over worked with lines so when adding colour/shading I took the chance to thin out any I didn't need!

new caricature I'm working on for a client - this is basically finished unless he wants colour - which I hope he does as I think it would look great! Really liking how this one turned out (and in case you're wondering ... yes the caricature has more hair - the photo was an older pic and he's grown his hair a bit since lol!)

yea caricatures are tricky, sometimes it almost comes across as an entirely different character, not that its done wrong or anything like that. just a really interesting exercise to see because every artist does them differently. great work man, keep it up

Very cool stuff. Dunno if this is helpful, but it seems to me that most of your caricatures have really long faces. But the second dude in post 454 has a pretty square face imo. Might help with likeness if you exaggerated the squareness instead. Just a thought

    Thanks guys!

JF - I agree it's fascinating to see the different ways different caricaturists interpret the same person! However I do strive to be one that gets at least a recognisable likeness!

tobbA - yep completely agree! as I'm kinda only just starting out doing specific caricatures as a 'style' I've not really done enough yet to draw ones I feel should be exaggerated differently when I've been drawing them (I do try a few different shapes and options in the process). But having said that I'm aware I keep making tall heads! I found with my mate's caricature in post 454 that when I made his head square it just looked too accurate or plain weird haha!

Here is the finished version of the guy with his lion puppet - loving the way this one came out!

    Hiya you!

Thanks for poppin by my sb, returning the favour...and you've been busy too. Love the last commission you did you do such clean colouring, i'm envious. How do you get your lines so neat too?? Do you use a Cintiq? Or is it because it's Illustrator? (I need to know Dammit!!)

I'm liking your style of caricaturing, it's nice and clean and you pick up just enough detail to make it look like them, even though the Alesoun one is a little stretched you can still tell it's her, I think that's what matters the most too. btw, I tend to squish heads down when I draw to get them looking more caricatured but it's not good if the person has a long face, I think you should do some more squished 'boxy' type heads as practice just like I should do more elongated heads..

anyway I'm gonna stop prattling now...tara!

    Hey an update!

Thanks guys - Angel yes I do use Illustrator for most of my work! ...but have set up my brushes with very little 'smoothing' as it has an irritating habit of smoothing all the wrong bits of your brushstroke! I love the clean vibrancy possible with Illustrator and once you've set up a brush well can give a great tool to work with. For colour I use the pencil tool with fill only. With both brush and pencil you don't want zero smoothing as it just records zillions of needless anchor points but too much smoothing and everything starts looking naff.
Having said that I can't recommend illustrator enough - if you would like to give it a bash and have any difficulty setting up a nice basic brush etc let me know. Oh and make sure your wacom tablet has double click distance set to 'off'

Haha I can prattle too! ah yes with the caricatures it has been mentioned I make them all thin n tall lol (Ilaekae was meant to be a less tall one)

Nyssa - thanks! and hmm we'll have to see - if you'd like people to do a portrait of you you should hang around the 'what does everyone look like thread' and the 'draw from the what does everyone look like thread' or WDELL and DFWDELL as you may see them referred to lol

So a couple of pieces I put together while trying to work out what a potential client was looking for:

Nice illustrations...the graphic works well too. I think I'll see if I can get a trial of Illustrator then, I remember having a go at Corel Draw years ago which is similar? (or did Adobe buy out Corel?) thanks for the offer I'll probably need help!

    Keep on boogeying
