    Jack Sparrow (value study)

Tonight I had my first successful LiveStream broadcast! My sister requested I sketch Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. Thought it would be pretty fun, soooo yeah.

The On Demand video of it on my Livestream channel can be seen here:

I'll probably do live sketch sessions more regularly, I had fun

Hah the thumbnail of Thom Yorke totally brought me here. Lately I've been unplugging my music and just focusing on drawing but... Wow I listen to Radiohead among what ever else I'm in to at the time, constantly. I'm always into Radiohead.

Keep it coming I found the impressionistic approach your using very interesting, I will give it a go tomorrow. Were the girls in post #268 and #269 photographs? Because they are very beautiful. I wouldnt mind a copy of the files you used since I would like giving those portraits a go.

Dy.laneA gotcha with Thom huh! I love Radiohead as well. The girls were indeed from ref, not sure where the links to their pics went though. I find most of my portrait ref on DeviantArt in the stock/reference section.

Speaking of, here's another value study from ref, took about an hour from sketch to values... will post the color version tomorrow

Hey guys... just some more portrait progression I thought I'd upload before hitting the hay - first one is the initial color lay-in, second one is the third pass where I corrected some proportions and tightened up some key features in the face.

    "My Heart is Yours" series

Decided to do a couple quickie acrylic paintings tonight to auction off so I can pay studio rent. And because I have a morbid fascination with pretty much *all things* medical, and V-day is coming up, I thought it would be fun to paint some hearts

    my first ACEO attempt

Hey guys! Thanks for the replies, I really do appreciate you taking the time to look at my stuff. I'm trying to post more often so I'm a bit more consistent, its just taking the time to save files appropriately and take pics and scans and whatnot.

Anyways, I thought I'd post my first ACEO attempt. For those of you who don't know what an ACEO is, they're basically artist trading cards. They can be on any media, as long as it measures 2.5" x 3.5" ... They are pretty popular apparently, and I thought it may be a good way to get my art out there into the hands of others at affordable prices.

This first one is just a mini skull study.

New Alla Prima Portrait "Matt Galles"

Ok, so I had the urge to paint something with my oils tonight, because frankly I missed them and practicing all this digital stuff has made me crave something different. Sooo to switch it up, decided to do an alla prima portrait of my friend Matt. So, here's the process shots I took throughout the night. This piece took about 2.5 hours from pencils to finished piece.

Will be doing more of these I'm sure... I want to do a whole new portrait series for 2010. I am on a constant lookout for people who will let me use their face, so if you're interested - shoot me a message with a link to a jpeg!

Lovely paintings in the last couple of posts! great brush strokes and colors.
Only crit would be that in a few of your paintings the anatomy around the eyes / placement of the eyes seem to be a little skewed.

    new portrait...

Braintree - Thanks for stopping by! And thanks for the crit Some of them may look skewed because of the angle they are photographed at as well, I'm trying to get better at shooting my work... hopefully the new ones won't be as bad!

Janae - thanks lady! I hope that one goes in a good direction haha Had to step away from it for a day or so and get some fresh eyes on it... we'll see!

Here's a new portrait I started today while waiting for the previous one to dry... just tackling the fleshtones today, I'm starting on the lace collar tomorrow when the skin and background gets a chance to dry a bit more.

Great sketchbook Jska Your process is a thing of beauty, starting out with grayscale and then jumping into color. Very nice Almost like a grisaille underpainting. Looking forward to more.

    more schtuff

So, this sketchbook is going to be all over the place as far as content goes for the next couple weeks. I'm scrambling a bung of new work together because I want to make my TAD portfolio submission as good as humanly possible (from me, at this point in time) - and as I personally feel I make progress every day, I just cannot compel myself to submit anything old for this submission. Soooo anyways, I have a few things I am working on in tandem right now. And by few, I mean ... well, more than a few.

Even though I couldn't afford to attend Discovery, I have been lurking in the forums where the discussions about the classes have taken place, and I've picked up some amazing advice just from the crits and posts in that section. If you haven't yet, I'd take it upon yourselves to check out some of the dialogue going on in those forums.

I'm posting a conceptual portrait I started tonight, some stylized kid-friendly sketch stuff, and a figure study I ganked ref from in the figure class thread. Your input is extremely appreciated. I've been working my ass off for this thing!

A figure study from the figure thread in the TAD section

...My aim here is to cover as many styles and media as possible, while still (hopefully) maintaining some strong work. We'll see where it goes. I've been working night and day on some things (when I'm not working the day job) and I really hope it'll pay off!

you're definitely making some great progress with the portraits, I really have to ask though, are you studying from life at all when you're doing portraits? I know it's hard to get people to sit for hours for you, but if you only study from photos it'll only hurt your work in the end. Especially if you're trying to submit your portfolio, they will know if you're using photos to do your work.

I'd really reccomend trying to get either family members or friends to sit at least for a few portraits or do some self portraits, if you can't get a live model, then mix up your portrait studies with master copies, it's the next best thing. Your hard work shows in your progress though so keep working at it .
