    Lisa Liang | Environments

    Hi everyone,
Below are some of my paintings that I'd like to share with you. The first, second, and last pieces below are inspired by the novel Dune - Arrakis, Castle Caladan, and Geidi Prime, respectively.

Very impressive work! I can't give any crit because I don't have much experience. Even if I was experienced, these pieces are still amazing.

    Good job!

Damn it, these are so freakin' amazing! The second one is so detailed.. Are you sure that isn't a photograph? Especially the hills and trees.

    Excellent!!

I love your enviros a lot, specially the Dune inspired ones. I admire the series a lot. I think they evolve the Dune feeling very well... although the arrakis one is very strange! Kick ass none the less.

I'm guessing the bath is actually indoors, and phased array optic paneling or some similar advanced display technology is being used to create the look of an outdoor environment. I like the placement of the mirror, which hints that this could be an illusion.

Hey, I absolutely love these. I'm a sucker for good uses of photographic elements.

Something bothers me about the front piece of the building in your second picture. Maybe I'm just stupid but it seems to be tipped forward a tick (perspectivewise).

Thanks for the encouraging comments!!! It took a lot of effort to create these, and I'm glad you enjoy looking at them.

    Dahami,
Yes, the bath is indoors, but it is set in a natural setting. The idea was being in the midst of nature with all the contemporary comforts. I was reading about Stanley Kubrick's films, where he uses doubles to hint at multiple meanings and duality of things: past/present, reality/illusion, self/others, interior/exterior. Of course, it's delightful to contemplate on such concepts in a tranquil bath.

excellent concepts. all them have such a nice mood to them, and I love the color pallette as well. The only critique would be on the night cityscape which seems a bit unfinished compared to the others... maybe you were goin for that? anyway great environment illustrations!

very nice execution of the concepts. the concepts them self could use a bit more designing.
the rock on the first pic looks like it will collapse any second.
The downsides of the clouds on the second image on the right side follow the horizon line and the trees in the lower right comer are distorted in the right direction pretty much.

The background on the 3th image is rather colorful compared with the room that is almost monochrome and the toilet you placed in the center catches my attention a bit to much. The shoes on the ground cast a shadow in a different direction.

the last image has a strong mood and nice colours. the smoke coming from the pipe could have a more sophisticated look. Looking at how you fogged the background i wonder why some elements remain black and this bridge connection stops casting the reflection halfway.

    Randis,
Thank you for your critiques! For Arrakis, since it's a dangerous and dry place, the rock looking as if it'd collapse any second was the idea - the impending doom, but it's hard to tell when.
The other pieces may use some minor adjustments, and your critiques have given me fresh ideas!

What I can't understand is why the painting style looks so different between all those images, almost like it was done completely differently. I also see a lot of photos pasted in (like the castle scene http://www.fotosearch.com/comp/AGE/A...17-212992.jpg), some 3D (the last pic) and some weird stuff like the smoke Randis talked about or the mirror in the bathroom scene. Totally bewildering. It's almost like those were created by pasting together other images.

    Hi Black Fish,
Thank you for your inquiries about my work. They are all 2D images and include a combination of photo montage and painting. I wanted to create distinctively different moods, and some paintings are more tightly rendered than others. That may have been confusing as different styles. Your comment is appreciated.

Love the mountaintop monastery... reminds me of Crouching Tiger. And that rock formation one makes me nervous... just looks like that thing is going to collapse. Great renders. Thanks for sharing.
