Hey thanks for dropping by my sketchbook! I'm checking through your stuff and I'm just going 'like it' 'nice one' 'spot on' 'hehehe' 'oh yeh' - thanks for brightening my day you have a very pleasant line style and spatial depth.

Worst thing is now I'm all inspired and don't have the time or brain power to do anything - but then conceptart.org is THE place to browse if you're ever lacking inspiration!

Man I'm looking forward to having free time and the creative batteries charged again!! till then keep rockin on!

Nice new post :-) you have such nice line quality in your sketches, I particularly like the guy with the questionmark speech bubble - i like his posture, arms and the long sleeves hiding his hands. Your face studies are really nice too - the ones where you have all the brow/cheekbone/nose creases etc flowing down the face (if that makes any sense!) and I'd love to see development of the slightly elaphanty creature face (2nd up from the bottom and 3 in from the right of the first page)

My favourite panda is the angle in the box where its looming up from the right hand corner - looks like hes lining up to give your friend a nice pandarey birthday hug!
My only thing would be that your guys seem to have so much more character (facially) than your girls, maybe its deliberate though? To me all your ladies on this page seem to look very serene and it makes them seem a little distant wheras the blokes look like they could turn and start talking to you or walking off the pages I guess maybe its harder to make a girl as expressionate because of the whole rendering with too many/too deep lines making a woman look old thing?

Anyway all still very inspirational! I shall try and update my poor neglected sketchbook soon to illustrate the fact that I am in no position to CC you at all! ;-)

The7Artist7-CHeers dude, hopefully your creative juices went into overflow and you been doodling plenty of stuff recently

frogSweat- Yeah man you did dissapear for a good while, hope you been having the fun. Hehe, yeah dunu dunu dunu dunu BATMAN....was pleased with that lil fella.

Clochette-why thankyou gots to love the cute factor

Atastrophea- your too kind as ever...and your right, I generally stear away from the expressions in an effort to just get the basics right...but just for you this time round I did a few more animated girls

Reject-D-cheers, I will do my best to keep it all a flowing

Now, bit of a sketch dump-a lot of it is for a new folio I'm putting together for this season's art fairs, as well as some personal stuff...theres some character practice I'm note wildley chuffed with (its all part of the learning though) and some material sketches I was doing to help me with some commission stuff I'm on with at the mo, also some studies from a fasion book (I need a bigger clothing design repertoire)...Muchos thanks to Mazz for the long and crazy list of animals....hope you like the Gerenuk! (I keep wanting to call it a Generuk)

Oh and if anyone is interested an interview I did for 2D Artist magazine:

    Tooo...... much..... CUTE!......pld: lol

Love the Gerenuk (and know what u mean about wanting to call it Generuk - me too!) and the Fennec, and chameleons and and and.... *goes off on another long list* I especially like the gorilla and hairy monkey on the Worm page.

Alot of the ladies still seem quite aloof but the girl with her eyebrow raised on the last sketches page is nice

I feel like going back to that list of animals and stylizing some now - I'm always torn between wanting to get better at "lifelike" realistic drawing and just having fun with lines an forms etc. I haven't really done anything stylized for ages as I've been trying to understand the technical side of it all but I miss it!

How do you think the two relate? is it important to get that lifelike side down before you start to play with it or can just developing your own really strong style be enough as long as its informed by the anatiomy/form/light/perspective etc etc knowledge?

ah well, off to uni to model for another prosthetics tutorial - funny pics soon I expect...

    keep on "doodling"

    m^-^m

a lot of these look really nice.
as a series you notice that the creatures are lonely.
    the creatures are often alone.

Kian: cheers man, appreciate it, always a fan of your stuff

Grafguy: Cheers bro, yeah was going for a fun vibrant feel with that one

Mazz: hehe, you can claim a little credit for your suggestions...as for the stylized vs mastering the basics thing: I'm sure I'm going about it the total wrong way, but I tend to just keep to the stylied stuff, do some studies now and then, but mainly just doodle what I feel like. If things get hard (like I cant draw an appendage/element of an pic) I'm a big fan of reference, and your always learning from that, but yeah, I say keep it fun, and do as much study as you have the energy for....I'd definately say you need to do a decent amount of stylizing , otherwise you may be drawn to the dark side of realism forever-dum dum duuuum, but then again I don't really have a clue...I'd probably be a whole lot better if I studied more

nosepilot: your very right...a lot of the time I think im just doing character design rarther than story-telling, I need to rectify that! (hopefully the cockatoos are a start)

    anticasper: why thankyou

HellTaxi: popped over to your site and WOW, you got talent dude!!!!

Now, some folio stuff: The girl reading was based on that sketch up there ^^that I did in a cafe of a girl who was in there. The rather confrontational looking chap was an interesting one, never really tried something like that without basing the pose on some reference...pretty much just worked it up from a thumb and used photos of myself for any reference I needed, and interesting exersize.

Oh and on a side-note the compositions are influenced heavily by Norman Rockwell, who at least in the book I got out of the library, used the trianglar compositions a lot-to great effect, so I'm attempting to use this here, though I'm not quite up to his rather great standard

Love the last one! so atmospeheric and nicely dark and lovely stretchy flow between the nose, neck and rib details. I'm thinking he would have done well in the CHOW Hot Male Vampire (although I'd vote for giving him 'natty hair' for that category of course... ) I like the primate avec flutterby too even if I did get a crick in my neck looking at it The cockatoos made me laugh out loud so that can only be good!

    Keep on inspiring me

very cool and oryginal style of characters.
I preser your illustration from 1 page of this sketchbook. Those new ones wher you are trying use some "fur" effects are to "digitalised". "Flat" [animation/cartoon styled] illustration are greater :d

Mazz: Glad I made you laugh-job done with that one

mysteryofalbesila: thanks-I'll have a look at the fur effects in the future and see if I can get a more painterly-stlye in there. Your right, I'm more comfortable with the flat colour thing, though I aim to improve with the renders this year-your comments are appreciated

    heheh.

Dave your digi's always surprise me cos you keep pulling out other styles and techniques keeping them fresh.

Looks like your drawing has improved ten fold dude, you are comfortable with using loads more shapes and getting the form right. I remember when it was circules and squares.

    5 stars.

Ahh well i just got to watch my nephew & niece (aged 6 & 8.) as their eyes lit up and their jaws dropped in wonder looking at your work on this page. They enjoyed spotting all the different animals in the sketches and Carl especially liked your executioner (Little boys are so morbid aren't they! lol)

I am loving the little boy and the monster piece as I see him walking into his room, finding the monster and throwing his hands up and going "arghhhhhh*, to which the monster thinks *ah that looks like fun* and joins in, making the child run away in fear, can see the monster in the next frame thinking - huh? why'd he run away, I was only joining in the game.....

Makes me laugh, smile and tells a whole story in one frame so top illustrator points and a gold star for you I reckon (And Gemma agrees with me because I am Auntie Mazz who's hair magically changes colour and who is alway right.....you gotta love it.)

Oh and hooray for Giant Anteater riding too (although I would have drawn ME riding it of course.....) Winged Giant Anteaters are my latest doodle friends, will try and put some updates in my sketchbook soon

CC: Draw more lovely twisty trees and branches, they're really nice but I dont see many of them here?

sjuskadur: Thankyou-though all areas I plan on improving in, I'm glad you like them now

Ashab: Thanks again man-I'm gonna give it a bash at some point for sure

Bob: Cheers man-yeah tell me bout it-still got a long way to go, but it's good to hear you can tell the difference-I wish I'd learnt all this crap back in the days when all we had to do was chill out, doodle and play guitar

    chuck18mp: Cheers bro!

Camara: Thankyou....as I already said in your SB, love your stuff

Mazz: Hehe, that made me smile. Yeah I need to get more story telling on the go-I'm pretty happy with how the monster turned out and yeah, I did used to do a lot more twisty trees, maybe I'll hit them some more soon-though I feel I should rock the architecture a little more, I'm definitly deficient in that area at the mo.

Ok, various sketches. This weeks COW, and a thing I had to do today super quick for my agency to stick on a banner at the London book fair.

I think I need to start making these smaller, this page is taking forever to load up now
