zou; Thanks man. Those are good points. Strict critique, but necessary. It's strange because I thought I was doing fine and I am only noticing the mistakes now. I'm trying to make a good character illustration for a portfolio but it's not yet working out. Thank you!

Angel Intheuk; Heya Angela. I feel I've got many different things to study but perhaps I need simple color/value stuff the most. Can't cut it yet on the technical side. Thanks for the critique on the illustration side as well. It's strange because the points you made about losing edges and using contrast make a lot of sense but I always lose track of those along the way. Meh, moving on!

MrFrenik; Thanks man! Yea I liked the topic, nice to have some company in the IDW. I also added some critique so you might want to check back. As for the Spartan Camp - just give it a try and see if you like it!

Photo-studies. Trying to understand value and colour mostly. Need to fix my clumsy colour blending too.

Also my entry for this weeks IDW activity!
Topic was "The Emperor's Imperial Traveling Library Carts".

I'll add my accompanying background text too-
Seeking prosperity for his subjects, the emperor decided that all should be literate. In his grandeur, he ordered the construction of traveling libraries that could visit all towns and cities. Both in- and outside, its walls are stockpiled with copies of the imperial library's books. Canvas sheets protect against wind and rain while the library carts traverse the country. Entire caravans of such ornate library carts would spread intellectual enlightenment and display the emperors generous intent for all to see.

the subject of the IDW is nice
if i was you i would add some colors (after doing all those clean books) it deserves some colors

in fact your colors studies are good

don't forget to do many works for a portfolio then select onyl the best (you sure gonna drop many)
great artists always tell that in interview (80% of your work goes to recycle bin)

    keep up mate

Terrific sketchbook Anthis, it's always pleasant to see what some hard work and a little(a lot) talent will do.

Hey Anthis! Sorry for being away a while again(!), I suck. I think the work you've put into all those gesture figures you've been doing is really showing in your understanding of anatomy and posing, which is great to see. I need to spend more time looking at and doing art to train my critical eye again, but that's just what sprung to mind looking over your last few pages.

zou -Haha, thanks. Planned to keep this as a really clean black/white study. I simply made a book brush for those books, in case you were wondering. With spacing turned on. Really useful. Also, I think my problem is that I throw too much away and finish too little ;|
aks9 - Good to hear, and feel free to join in! open for everyone!
I STRaY I - Not sure, talent is a tricky word. I think I really need the studies Thanks for the encouragement!
Hai - Hey man! Yea I think there are improvements, just slow as always. Not happy with that. But improvement alone, how little it may be, does get you going. It's very fulfilling. But with every step you realize how much more needs to be done. Ah well.

Going to be quick about this update! There's too much work to finish, too much to critique, too much to study.
Tons of unfinished junk and sketches piled up. Probably wont be posting it all, but here's a start.

This is all Spartan Camp, I believe. No ref exercise.

    Other stuff!

    - Creature of the Week entry. Started 1 day before deadline, so had little time. Topic was "Kappa". Interestingly, someone in the WIPs thread pointed out some funny details about kappas. In Japanese folklore they pull all sorts of pranks. But they also drown people and/or eat their livers and suck a mysterious 'soul ball' out of their victims' anus. No joke. Either way that was a good source of inspiration. Started too late, semi-happy with it and planning to finish this one.

    - Cghub activity ("Cyberpunk ave"). I'm a massive cyberpunk enthusiast so I absolutely had to join this. Did some sketches first, then decided to use some photographic elements as a guideline for perspective and scale. Spotted this topic really late as well which was a big shame. Still working on this one!

your kappa creature is very good: just finish it
there is some facts i didn't known about , already read about it

the colors and contrast in the face should be repeated elsewhere ( the hand ?) and perhaps a bit in the background

the cyberpunk concept seems very promising, composition is good and forms are interesting

Great creature and cyberpunk street scene! I love the movement in the creature, very dynamic. And the street scene is a really great use of photo ref, I didn't even notice that you'd used it in the last concept, seamless.

Really loving the perspective work in those street/city scenes. Doing metropolitan areas are freaking daunting, so cheers for doing so many. I really like the way you incorporated the photo ref into a concept piece. The studies at the top of the page are excellent as well. Keep it up!

Oh wow! Your sketchbook is amazing! It is really nice to see, where you are coming from (page 1) and where you got now! Very impressive... What I especially like is your linework and your understanding of the human figure. And, given you dont use a colorpicker , your ability to find the right colors from reference

Do you feel that learning lots of anatomy still helps you, as you already seem to know a lot... I'm just asking myself if it makes sense, after a certain amount of basic knowledge.

If I should give you a tip, which is a little hard seeing how good you are, it would be to make better use of lineweight. I mean not only altering the weight of different lines, but also on the same line. You already do it, but i think you could use it in a more expressive (?) way.

I'm really looking forward to seeing more from you,

zou- Yea... I've got this problem with too many unfinished paintings. I always want to start a fresh piece.
Angel Intheuk- That one was a lot of fun, and somewhat of a surprise. I find that it really helps if you have something 'to start with'. Especially for environments. Using a blank canvas can be daunting.
chevy28360- Thanks! Yes cities are crazy, I don't get how people pull that off. But using a little photo reference can help a great deal. Allows you to compare scale and check what an actual city should look like.
embree- Hah, thanks. Page 1 is a long time ago though, as far as I'm concerned I should be much better by now. Though studies have been irregular due to uni. Cheers for the tips on lineweight. Somehow I do realize this, yet I always fail to implement it. Going to see if I can do some specialized studies to address this problem. It's a powerful tool for expression, like you said. Like using vanishing edges to show depth. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Ok, animation baby steps. So much work yet so much fun.

EOW entry. Topic was depicting a scene from one of the Street Fighter characters' background. Picked the rainforest where Blanka's plane crashed.
