my anatomy practice/ study sketchbook. constantly trying to improve and develope a greater understanding of t he figure and anatomy. be as harsh as you want, as my emotions are made from steel (actually, it's a strong alloy, but steel is cooler sounding). hmph. enjoy, help, critique, be merry.

...sorry about the crazy angles and upsidedown-ness of these images. I tend to flip my drawing materials around every so often.

Well, it looks like your anatomy is off to a good start.

Now that I've re-adjusted my vertebrae after looking at them sideways and upside down, I would suggest using something to crop and rotate as necessary before you post next time. That will make looking and critiqueing less of a (literal) strain on your viewers.

big update - scanning things in isn't fun! more to scan in - but here's what i did this round. Some of the pics are still a bit sideways- sorry, but I'll try to just draw in one direction - for the meantime it takes too much time to PS thigns in all different directions

ellingsworth - most of these studies are reference from Burne Hogarth's work. I find his stuff pretty informative. I'd like to do some studies of old master's stuff. Leo in particular. I've been trying to get into a drawing class so i can do some life-model figure stuff. but until then...

Ahhh, very nice studies, dude. Thanks for the comment and encouragement! I think I remember that one face drawing up there, the guy with his mouth open is that a Leonardo or a Michelangelo sketch copy? I have to study them some more. Later, dude. Keep updating!

Hey Radio, great start so far, you're on the right track to nailing down the basics. Keep up the Bridgeman, throw in some Loomis and do a few pages a day, the theory is golden! I'd suggest you pay more attention to your line making, its improving, but you could tighten it up much more, so its less scratchy. Take into consideration line weight, where the line gets thicker and thinner, experiment. Go for the confident lines! Keep it up dude, keep kicking butt.

Tried doing female anatomy? It's a different animal in a lot of ways I heard. Looks like you're paying attention to what you're supposed to do with the rest. And for some reason, your darker scan appealed to me a lot more than the whites, maybe it's just easier to see every line.

Hey, thanks for stoppin by my sketchbook. Glad u liked the enviros. Yeah that last one in my sketchbook had some things definately wrong with it; that's what i get for trying to do an enviro of the week during finals =p. Anyway, u have a nice sketchbook here yourself, i'm diggin the anatomy studies. If you really want something that will help u with anatomy a ton; something i swear by, check this out:

The clay sculpture, the plain grey one is the best thing i've found for studying anatomy, i've learned by leaps and bounds since i got mine and it is in my opinion better to study from than most anatomy books in my opinion. Keep it up.

that is an amazing resource, thanks Zealot. It's a bit pricey, but i must get my hands on one. I can't seem to find the difference between version 1 and 2.. is the grey one just more detailed?

Very nice studies, I'm not seeing much in regards to the head, hands or feet though. are you focusing on the overall before you get into the nit picky areas?

thanks for the comments guys- nice observation - smokey: you hit it right on. i'm trying to unerstnad the body as a whole, then i'll go back in. but yeah, i'm pretty weak in those areas at the moment.

Hi Radio.

Impressive sketchbook so far. I recommend Loomis as well for your anatomy studies. They are a great resource (if you can get past the hammy mid-20th-century hair-styles...) and the text accompanying the images is also really enlightening. The best thing is, you can download a whole bunch of .pdf books by Loomis for free! ... just google it.

Anyway.... keep it up!
