Hi,
I'm not much of a poster on here as mainly I just enjoy seeing the vast range of talent on here. This site is amazing as it's an unlimited resource of inspiration.

I work freelance within the UK and have done various flyers for club nights, designs for the centres of vinyl, backdrops, spray painting and so on. Been struggling with this for a few years now but have always wanted to enter the video game industry as a concept artist. I've read a few posts on here about entering the industry but am wondering what others opinions are on either my work and/or that type of work.

Finally got around to uploading a few of my sketchbooks though.
This sketchbook is mainly from last year.

Woah, great start man. The style doesn't really do it for me but there's no doubt these are pretty good.

Wow, that's quite a first art dump you have there!

The cartoony stuff looks pretty good overall, but the pieces where you seem to be attempting a higher degree of realism are showing some perspective issues, particularly in the heads and faces. You might want to work on those a bit.

Cheers for the responses, always been having perspective issues.
Having a bash at digital painting though, the first two are from photos and the other is an experiment for a friend who's going to be printing t-shirts and hoodies. Only limited to 4 colours max though, looks like a bit of posterisation is inorder.

Okay, being extremely rubbish [or too busy, be it one or the other] I've only just got around to upload more sketchbook work.
Not all that interesting, just more anatomy stuff really, but any input anyone's got on my progress would be well recieved.
I quite enjoy working in biro as it doesn't leave much room for error, hence you can see where you're going wrong.

I believe your anatomy is ok man, its coming along nicely, you just need to tweak some things here and there, and it will be done!
You're already pushing yourself on the anatomy, so I believe soon you will improve even more. You could try doing an exercise that someone taugh me, that may help you with anatomy:

You go and draw a figure, from reference. Try to just do the general likework. Then, you try to draw this figure skeleton/muscles, trying to place the muscles in their correct place. This is a great exercise since it forces you to really understand where the muscles connect.

Well, anyway, lovely stuff man. I love the music influences in your work.

I've tried that before but it's weird trying to figure out what muscules are what on models as some photos are very decieving [could extra fat]. I'll have more attempts at at though and see how things go.

hey, thought id have a look at your sketchbook, like your stuff, my brother does some stuff similar to your style. well zbrush is a 3d aplication but it also has neat 2dfeatures (like the deco brush) its fun for experimentation, lots of possibilities. and if you struggled with 3d software, zbruhs migh tbe righ tfor you because it is 3d (well 2.5D) but its constructed differently and i think more intuitive for eople with little 3d-software knowledge. just give it a try you will like it.

Cheers, is he into his Manga then [and are you due to the Ranma avatar]? I've always been told my stuff looks very heavily Manga influenced. Never really intended, it just seems to develop that way.

Will have a bash with zbrush and let you know how I get on.

ZBrush is an awesome tool for concepting etc, highly recommend you getting it, only, if you´re planning to do 3D animations or ingame art, you´d have to go for other applications such as Maya, 3D Studio Max or Blender even (freeware/open source ftw!)


Btw, nice sketchbook.. you´ve got an interesting style going on there, love your mechanical sketches.. good sense of perspective and lightning.. keep it up!

Thanks Mossi, I take it you mean the 'interesting' as in different [the word kinda makes me paranoid].

I'm gonna view a fair few videos of zbrush first to see how complicated it is. I'm still a bit up and down about the whole video gaming thing, it was ambition for years until the university course I went on seemed to put software knowledge before art. I have been told though that the whole concept art thing [video game wise] is just a way for companies to steal your ideas when you apply.

Anyway, tomorrow I'm off to help do more artwork for a cider festival for the week. I'll post up the work when I'm back [although I don't think it'll be that relevent to the world of concept art], it'll be on my website anyway.

For now some more practise with females. I sympathise Mossi, why are they so difficult [generally]? ;D

Here's a couple of boards I painted up for this cider festival. These two were for the club indoors for after dark.
The robot / cyborg was on an 8ft x 4ft board and the converted combine harvester was on two of these boards. Bit of a bugger keeping it level though.
Will post up more when I get round to editing the photos.

hells yes porg, ive been a fan of your flyers for a couple years now ever since i first found one on the floor of some hackney warehouse.
your figure studies are really coming along nicely, definatly makes me feel i need to put more effort into that area. as for your machinery stuff, wow you have a reeaaallly good eye for technical drawing, seem to place the shadows perfectly. hope to see more of your backdrops in flesh ifyouknowwhaddamean

you're coming along nicely! Like all your small little doodles, they would be great as tattoos! The anatomystudies are also great, just keep up with it.
But try not to blur as much. Sharpen up your contours alittle!

Thanks Dannelf, I've actually had a few people use my images as tattoos. Quite an honour. What do you mean by not blurring as much, do you mean I need to have more defined lines?

Man, it was a blast looking through your Sb! I love the way you fill up your pages! ( check out alabapsi's Sb, she likes to fill up her pages too!)
I agree with what the others have said..anatomy could use work, but your sketches have "life" and movement in them. Thats good!

lovely stuff, I really like the black and white work it's really dynamic and powerful I tend to work in oils and in digital (photoshop) but to be honest I tend to use what I find and feel like using at the time, thanks for your comment
