hello hello! i've finally gathered up the courage to post my junk. in this thread are just some things that i've done on a whim, or in the span of an hour or something-- nothing big! and any feedback is always, and greatly appreciated. and i don't mind if you critique my doodles, as any tips will help. :)

I say nice start , and some studies, mainly on shadowing, getting that will really help alot of what you do , and give more depth and realism , even though you have seemingly cartoonish or somewhat like that style.

Your pencil work is definatly your strongest stuff. Anime style is coming along well...but keep doing your reference work, it will help develop your anatomy and anime stuff. Keep posting!

olawd, does it really look like anime? i've tried really hard to stay the hell away from that, lol. i've always thought my style was more western or comic-bookish. crap!

Believe me I thought the same thing , when your style looks like one thing, the best thing to do is to study into what your style looks like that way your art will benefit the most. Manga is a completely other styl e, that is well, obscure in some ways, and pretty cool in others, study into it it will help to pursue a style that you are already familiar with.

I think your style is definitely referenced in manga. I think what gives it away is the lack of shadow in the face.

Personally I think you can get out of that slump by reading more comic books but chances are you will stay with the manga somewhat...it's not a bad thing. Google some Micheal Turner stuff....You'll see what I mean. He has a huge manga influence but he draws western comics...and he does it damn well.

Anyways. Good start on the lifedrawings. I think you should try drawing 3-dimentional shapes underneath..very lightly...so that you can picture the object in 3 dimensions while you draw it. The directional lines people use to draw the way the spine goes definitely help with the flow of the body but it rarely helps with how believable it looks... if that makes sense somewhat

Aaaah, I'll just have to keep studying more western styles. I really, really don't like anime, lol, and I don't want to be a hypocrite by drawing things that look influenced by it.

Either way, ped454, thank you thank you, for all of your tips! Whenever I get tips, I always wanna start practicing and try out every suggestion I get. So thank you, especially for the scans, too! To go out of your way to give me those is so kind of you. And I'm glad you like my self portrait x)

I've been noticing your drawings improving lately, and I think the realism practice helps that. You should do more figure drawing and perhaps some photo practice as well.

I actually think some of your better work is when you're doodling random characters- I think you have a good eye for detail, especially on older men. (I wonder why. you oldaphile you.) I think sometimes you could use a little more fluidity in your facial features especially, because your anatomy is developing faster than your faces.

This is all awesome stuff as I already said. Although there were some hiccups in the anatomy, like in that pinstripe-pants guy. In one pic the legs were to short, in another the arms connected sorta weirdly into the torso.

But this stuff is still great, and now I know what you mean by "chinophilia," lmao.

Ernie Vivieros? he's a good teacher but he spends a lot of time on each student. So there will be days where he won't get to you at all. I had him for first semester painting and it was great. His approach is very methodical. Good to learn from.

For painting you might consider two others...Anita Dawson & Jason Clary.

Dawson is really good and pretty up front. She will tell you when your shit stinks, but she does it in a pleasent way. Plus she will let you know if your painting at the level you should be at. If you want an ez teacher I wouldn't really recommend her b/c she will only give an A on works that truley deserve an A. (aka like 3 people per painting will get an A the rest will have b's or worse). If everything is good but 1 problem area u will get a b+, but she always lets you go back and fix it if you really want a better grade.

I haven't had viveros but like phong said he's good based on what I've heard...but when he gets to you for critique he makes you get up while he paints on your stuff!

and Clary is just a really good teacher. I don't have much more to say about him b/c I haven't had him yet. But I've seen how his class works (he teaches right next to mine currently) and its very organized. He goes around and does a one on one critique and then later he does a group critique (same with dawson).

If you don't sign up for any of those 3 teachers or you get assigned to another painting teacher other than those 3 drop it ASAP!

a concept of Edmond Dantes for a short The Count of Monte Cristo comic i did. there are other concepts, but i like this one the most.
