My sketchbook of Me in Epic proportion!

Inspired by this site, I shall be embarking on the journey of a year of self portraits. I realise there is a SP forum, but it is rather slow, and I would appreciate comments along the way. Here are my first 2. I do one a day.

    Please leave a comment.

Thanks for the enthusiasm guys! Stick by me throughout the year. I'm dreading giving up. I'm sure there will be days when it is no more than a doodle, but the days of oil paintings should balance those out. I cant wait for this time next year to see the final product.

And yes Camara, I'll have 365 portraits when the year is up.

Good Stuff, sounds like a solid idea and you know you will at least always have material to draw, haha...its not like you can lose your face! Plus I like that you are doing expressions, I'll have to keep my eye on this one. Great use of block shading, but may I suggest more contrast in value? Still, well done, btw, how long do these take you? I'm always interested in time...later im sure...

Those sort of portraits (pencil with semi realistic shading) take between 1 and a half and 2 hours, with a likeness being captured within about 30 minutes and the rest of the time just "finishing" it.

I know what you mean about the lack of contrast, but it was intentional. I am not going for uber-realism at the moment. I'm just experimenting, but I'm sure there will be plenty with realistic contrast throughout the year.

Thanks for all the support guys, I love hearing your input.

As do I, I wonder if I'll make a special effort or just treat it as another day. I also wonder if I keep going, will it become habbit? Will I do a portrait on day 366 and forget I don't have to? Please stick with me guys, I will need your support. Thanks.

You know its funny I was just reading an article about a reporter who asked Jerry Seinfeld how he stays a successful comedian and how he got the material for his shows and acts. He told the man that you get a big calendar and a big red marker, and tell yourself you have to do so much of "x" (being whatever it is you do, a portrait in your case) to put a big red X in the spot on the calendar. After about a week you start seeing the chain of how much you've done, and then all you have to do is not break the chain of red X's. I thought this was really helpful, I use the calendar chain system and it keeps me on track and its a welcome reminder. Also, you should hope that on day 366 you keep drawing! Its a habit you wont want to break! Good Luck, I'll be around...

Thanks for the advice. I know this probably wont happen, but imagine if I never stopped. Thousands of portraits showing me age, lol. Lets just aim for a year at this point though shall we. I'll post day 3's portrait later, I'm still working on it. It's mixed media, think yellow and red, lol.

Hey guys, sorry for not updating; my computer was on the fritz, it had to go to the shop. But I have kept it up. One self portrait a day, so here's the 4 new ones to bring you up to date. Please leave comments on them! Keep me going!

    #4

4 is just acrylic on board.

    #5

5 is colouring pencil on paper

    #6

6 is pencil pastels and pink hair-spray (I had no spray-paint) on paper~ it's obviously just a quick job.

    #7

I'm quite happy with 7, it is boot polish (yes, boot polish!) and a thick white paint marker.

Hope you like them, keep the comments coming!!!

Thanks guys, I love hearing other people's input on my work. I never thought that one day I'd discover how much I enjoyed the freedom of boot polish.... but the smell almost killed me.

    Keep the comments comin'.

Hey guys, If you want to see what one of my self portraits would look like in a specific style you like; post a pic and I'll do my best. I don't want to become utterly repetitive after a coulpe of weeks.

OK, wow, this one took way longer than I expected (because it's precise, not free). Oh well, here is self portrait number 8; pencil on paper. Hope you like it. Tell me what you think!

I like the ventures into more abstract, and I can see why it took you some time to actually finish it. The important thing with abstract is not to assume that just because you have little limitations that you can work fast, unthinking, and leave something underdeveloped. I think you see that which is great! Its great to see more contrast in this one too. Keep it up!

Thanks Leadster618, I know what you mean. I set the perameters before I started and it was very difficult to stick to them and not just be leniant with my lines.

Hey guys, I'm here with an update. This is the 9th self portrait of (hopefully) 365. It is drawn with a black gel pen on a sprayed background. One thing I'll say is that the pink doesn't show up well on the screen (well, at least not on my monitor), but in real life it is luminous day glow pink, uncomfortably pink, I love it. Tell me what you all think, I appreciate all comments.

It's abstract, I guess it could be considered cubist. I tried to pick our blocks of shade on my face and just drew them in definite harsh shapes. Then I went over the harsh lines at the end with a sharp pencil to make them stand out. Give it a try, you've got nothing to loose! Hope this helps
