    A Jushra Art Stream -2010.09.16-

I started this back in July 2007 so please head on over to the last page. Or if you really want to see some unfocused 'work', peruse. Either way comments/critiques welcome, appreciated, and highly encouraged.

    Totally focused. Mission not complete.

more; also, as far as inspiration to get out of the humanoid creature fix i seem to be on, any advice? i've looked thru so many sketchbooks and i see so many strange and wonderful creatures; but when i starting noodling out an idea, it ends up being humanoid. its bothersome.

    designboot: thanks!

darknight: its digital color, with some custom brushes. i was trying to be deliberate with my strokes instead of just throwing them down randomly. i'm going to be trying my hand at oil painting soon; my only experience with paint thus far has been with acrylic. get yourself a sketchpad going in this place!

i was doing some studies from bridgman's human machine (i have his 1000 picture anatomy book on the way); going back to the basics really can be frustrating, but the rewards are well worth the effort.
i also have found a plethora of figure drawing classes around pittsburgh, so if any of yinz are from around here, i can provide you with a list.

Awesome stuff in here man. You got some real strong solid lines goin on too. What kind of pencil do you usually sketch/draw with?

Recluse: Thanks! The more recent work is with a regular HB or 2B pencil. The figures and stuff from a couple days ago are with a pen. I'm also a fan of lead holders (2H lead: see the Centurion up top).

Viking Raider: thanks for the compliment.

so... i'm going back to the basics for a good while. right now i'm going thru the structure of man dvds, studying bridgman, and doing some stuff from life when the opportunity arises. i was looking thru MindCandyMan's sketchbook was totally inspired. it was art or nothing before, that added to it. below are some sketches and a big dumb blue animal.

    I'm digging the digi's man.

Thing with your sketches. For some reason I get a feeling you draw these lying down or in a way that you see the page very closely. I'm saying this cause i think the reason some of your anatomy is off. the way your paper is in relation to you may be causing your eyes to play tricks.

Iunno. I hope you get what i mean and i don't just sound insane. Till next time lol.

i think i just have to unlearn what i think i know and relearn the proper things. thats why i'm going back to the basics for a bit. i'm also learning how to oil paint, so there will be improvement soon.

    you don't sound insane.

Hey jushra, I wanted to say thanks for stopping by my sb and commenting---I see you've added some more since I visited last. I like the shading on the "big dumb blue animal" and especially like the line work on the last picture of post #13 (the dinosaur/dragon creature). My only crit would be to watch the length of the bodies compared to the head size, it seems the bodies are little long (although only on the latest posts, the others seem to be pretty spot on). Just keep 'em coming!

Hey Jushra. I found your SB through Viking Raider's SB and figured i'd come show it some love.

Your pencil work is really nice. You have a really loose style. I enjoy the sketchy style that you use (I do the same thing). Maybe you should try doing the same pictures but with less, more controlled lines.

Also, I see a lot of really nice black and white but very little color. By the looks of it you have the ability to do digital, maybe start experimenting with adding color to some of these nice sketches.

    Good job.

just a page today, random stuff while watching 'A Scanner Darkly'; and I have an update from yesterday, but it has to dry. I finally started using oils and once its dry and I photograph it, I'll upload it. Or maybe it doesn't have to dry, but the ground does, it just rained. I'm rambling, on with the show!

On a side note: I'm starting to notice my mistakes more and more; so I'll start correcting more and more. I have to get more into the Bridgman studies.

Viking Raider: Thanks for the comments. I was watching the Structure of Man DVDs and was just following along. I don't like the proportions either, but I think its just to build on for future lessons; we'll see.

Red Skull: Thanks for the comments. More color is on the way, right now I'm just doing studies of various things to improve overall.

A Scanner Darkly, OoooOoo. I straddled the fence about that movie. Fun to look at because of the unique art that went into making it but terribly slow in some parts.

Nice doodles. I like the heads that are stuck together.

i really enjoy studying bridgman. everything becomes so clear. and i'm trying to figure out why it smells like a mix of gasoline and car exhaust in my 2nd floor apartment, it gets hard to think, concentrate and breathe...i suppose i should get out for a bit; tangent aside, comments and whatnot welcome.

Basics are the way to more , so it's good your going back and practicing them. I like the digi's and what ped454 said , try to work on that it can distort anatomy.

another self portrait. not the greatest, but better than that nonsense i put up yesterday. some other head sketches as well. i'm sculpting a small head too, while referencing bridgman. that should be done tomorrow or friday at the latest. just for me to tilt around so i can study from any angle.

edit: doing studies all the time would drive me mad. added in a character/armor design i did while watching 'last comic standing'.
