plain old paper & pencils

Hello all, I'm still relatively new to drawing and have some questions. But for now I'll just limit myself to the most important one:

Is it possible to get good at drawing with just my trusty pencil and sketchbook, or am I just kidding myself when I think I'll ever be able to create anything aesthetically pleasing with a sketchbook and a box of Bics?

To me a pencil sketch that conveys fresh idea, great design or just shows amazing skill is ten times better than well rendered but boring digital painting.

You can create beautiful works in any medium. It takes time, practice, imagination and technical prowess. Keep working and follow the advice from the people in these forums and you will indeed begin to see what you are trying to achieve.

Wow, It's good to hear I haven't been wasting a whole lot of my time and effort. Oh and thanks to Atlantis for the link of awesomeness, I didn't know such control could be displayed with a pencil and paper. It's absolutely amazing!

If your into Pencil stuff definitely check out Mercedes Helnwein. She is actualy Gottfried Helnwein's daughter. She pretty much works solely in black pencil and colored pencil. Awsome work.

digitaly, i cna't draw worth a filp. it always ends up looking like something you would see a grade school child do. I'm to scared to see what happens if someone turned me loose on a tablet.

Now give me a peice of paper, some penicls and pens... it's alllll good.
Not to mention, it's "cheap" compared to buying fancy computers and programs. and you don't need electricity!!

precisely why I ask, I simply don't have access to fancy programs. Not to mention the tremendous learning curve some of them have. I mean, just take Photoshop for example. I'm not much of an artist yet, but I can certainly draw better with pen&pad than with that program. Granted that I don't have a tablet, but still!

if your just starting out, then do what you are comfy with. and just gradualy grow bolder by learning new mediums. perhaps one day you will make that leap and get some good programs.
I am working on raising the money now to do just that. i want to expand my skills. but do take your time and do what you feel best with..

I'm glad I saw this thread. I was questioning the same thing. Sometimes I feel a bit embarrassed to post my hand drawn items in pencil because everyone seems to have some sort of program or digital pad to get theirs all clean and fancy (yea i'm being silly).

Thanks sweetoblivion for posting the penciled sketches, gives me a bit of confidence.
